I just bought a Mark XX this week. Honestly it’s a must buy if you are a flieger fan such as myself. The quality is superb. Yes the dial is understated in black, but the other three colors are very dynamic and well executed which needs to be appreciated in person. Picking the color is actually the hardest part of buying the Mark XX. I was torn between the white and black, and ended up going black. The bracelet is nothing short of a masterpiece and actually dresses up the watch substantially. If I want the tool appearance I wear on leather or nato, but when I want to dress up the watch the bracelet perfectly fits the bill. My wife even commented on how polished and dynamic the bracelet was (mind you she never pays attention to my watch). There are some quarks with the time setting of the time, but otherwise my example has been running at -2/+2 depending on how it’s kept overnight. Another slight miss is the lack of lume compared to say the BP43 and many German fliegers. To those who argue you can get a German flieger for a fraction of the cost, I will argue as someone who has owned many tiers of watches between $1-10k (Rolex, omega, Tudor, GS, breitling, longines, sinn, CW, etc) I find the quality and finish on par to that of stainless Rolex and Omega, therefore making the 6k price tag appropriate. I could go on and on about IWC and my purchasing experience, best yet. While many have come and gone, this watch is never leaving my collection. Cheers, thanks for the video showcasing this beautiful piece

Very thorough and well thought. The Mark XX is such a fantastic timepiece and I think all dial options are great. The black really highlights its heritage and is the most timeless of the bunch. I really appreciate your comment, and the watch community needs more of this. Passion is what breathes life and meaning into watches.

@@johnnysilverhand1733 IWC has great movements and the Mark XX is no exception. Just because they don’t pay for “cosc” or “master chronometer” certifications doesn’t mean they aren’t highly regulated. Cosc is pretty much a marketing scam anyway since most moderns movements can meet cosc. My watch runs almost perfectly on the wrist, and has been accurate to under +2 seconds per day. It’s called regulating a movement. IWC regulates their movements just like Rolex or Omega. For that matter I’ve had $500 smith watch that ran well within chronometer specifications because they regulate the movement. The 32111 in the IWC has 120 hours of power reserve, silicon, a super long service life and 8 year warranty. Versus the 55-70 hr power reserve, 5 year warranty on Omega and Rolex. How could you argue that’s inferior to what Rolex or Omega are producing? There are many brands offering longer warranties now days at many price points.
I would agree the lume could be better but that’s really my only nit pick, and for me that’s not a big deal.
Your pricing argument is also invalid. The retail on an omega Seamaster 300 (which I’ve owned, and I’m guessing what you’re referring to) is $5,900 at retail. The IWC is $6,150. And honestly the bracelet on the seamaster is horrible. Sure you can get a seamaster for less on grey market or on Reddit watch exchange, but you can also get a practically new or mint Mark as well. In fact most Mark XX on brackets are selling for $4500-5000. So again not sure where you’re getting your info from?
My point is you thinking the watch is over price is subjective. Any luxury watch is over priced if you really think about it, and we justify as luxuries. While it may not work for you it, it works for me and that’s the beauty of timepieces, there’s something for everyone and we can have these silly arguments.

Awesome review! Just a note, it looks like the date is aligned vertically to the 2 and 4 o.c. which is actually is a cool detail imho.

I think they are fantastic. Love the small color options you get now (I know its not traditional but its a nice option.)

Dude the engraved aircraft on the back is a luftwaffe Junkers JU52 transport plane. Definitely not a RAF plane!😅

Its hard not to think they missed an opportunity with the lume here. Still an awesome watch though, love it. Its also quite a bargain when you compare it to the Ingenieur.

11 days into ownership of this model with the black dial. I love that it is running -1 when worn then gains +1 when rested dial up overnight for a daily deviation of 0 everyday for the past 11 days. Cosc certified or not, i either got real lucky with this one or that's just how iwc regulates their movement.
The only "complaint" i really have is the absence of every marker being lumed instead of just the 12, 3, 6, and 9. But it may be a deliberate design choice (inspired by the Mark 11) and not a cost cutting excuse.
The minute hand also jumps when you hack the movement but at the instance you are getting ready to set the time anyway so that is a non issue especially that it does not seem to affect its actual impressive timekeeping performance.

@@kaakie1 yikes. Was this the way it was running brand new out of the box? I wonder if iwc would regulate it under warranty. Since they don't have a stated accuracy i don't know what their tolerances are. Worth to give it a shot. Get it to within cosc at least. Good luck. 😊
Bandaid solutions could also try resting it in different dial positions at night and see which position would take some seconds off?

Im interested in the Mark XX because of the updated movement and bracelet. I was almost set on the black dial, but this green looks spectacular. Not so certain on the black now. I'll have to see them both in person. Thanks for the video.

Did you buy it retail or somewhere else? I originally wanted this but since it’s so price competitive with omega and some grand seikos, it’s definitely pushed back in the wishlist

I have a video I'm working on at the moment comparing this with my Omega Aqua Terra. It should be ready in the next few weeks. I'm not sure if it still is, but when I purchased it, the green was an IWC boutique exclusive, so it can be hard to find it elsewhere.

That date being off is my one and only gripe with this watch. IDK why IWC doesn't release a no-date just to get around this. Oh, and the numbers and most markers aren't lumed. What a way to botch a near-perfect watch.

The lack of lume, especially on the seconds hand, ruins this watch. Excellent readability, especially in the dark, is what pilot watches are all about. This misses the mark.

    • @DesertTriDad
      @DesertTriDad 7 місяців тому

Agree to disagree. While lume is a benefit, readability is what a pilots watch is all about. I’ve never been in a cockpit that’s been pitch black and the contrast of the dial and hands is very readable even in low light

I'm not a pilot. Plus lume doesn't last all that long anyways. If that is make or break on a watch, you're very picky. To me, it's just a fun bonus. Like the lume on a Zelos watch. Crazy bright, but doesn't make the watch. I'd rather applied indicies than lume.
