The giants of Royal de luxe are perhaps one of the most spectacular parts of Leeuwarden Fryslan 2018, cultural capital. The iconic giants of Royal de Luxe will turn Leeuwarden, and especially the center of Leeuwarden, upside down.
It is the first time that the giants of Royal de Luxe can be seen in the Netherlands.
THE LITTLE GIANT GIRL
The Little Giant Girl is about 5 meters high and weighs 800 kilos. She needs 20 people to get moving and is made of steel, poplar and lime wood. Her hobbies are gymnastics and eating sweets and she often wears a green or pink dress, depending on the weather. She has also been spotted in a raincoat or Mexican ensemble! She wanders through the city in search of her father and likes to let children take a swing ride on her arms along the way.
THE XOLO
The Xolo melted from a block of ice during a show in Guadalajara, Mexico. He is a Mexican dog, considered a sacred animal by the Aztecs and is the best friend of The Little Giant Girl. Like a real dog, he wags his tail, scratches himself behind his ears and sticks his tongue out to give you a heartwarming lick! This good dog weighs no less than 350 kilos and is almost three meters high. It takes twenty owners to make The Xolo move smoothly and to make him run up to almost six kilometers per hour.
THE DIVER
This impressive Giant weighs 3 tons and is 11 meters long. It takes about 30 people to make him move and he is made of poplar and lime wood, leather and steel. He wears diving gear with a helmet. Only his forearm and hands are uncovered. His hair is made of horsehair and his eyebrows of broom straw. His eyes are powered by small motors and are made of street lamps.
Royal de Luxe is a French theatre group that creates street theatre with giant mechanical marionettes. The group was founded in 1979 by Jean-Luc Courcoult, and is based in Nantes.
