  • On today's episode of Bigenda Bitya, we are honored to host a group of individuals known as "Bachotara." These guests are here to share the significant challenges they face in Uganda, particularly in obtaining national documents. Despite having grown up in Uganda, many Bachotara encounter substantial obstacles when trying to secure essential identification documents from agencies like the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA). The core of their struggle stems from a pervasive perception among officials that they are not Ugandan citizens. This episode delves into their personal stories, the bureaucratic hurdles they face, and the broader implications of their plight on their daily lives and rights. Through this discussion, we aim to shed light on these critical issues and advocate for more inclusive and fair administrative practices.

Am a mixed race too, my grandmother being a musoga. Infact many mixed race community members are from Busoga. Honestly, since i have applied for passports, i have not heard any kind of discriminating, and so did my 3 daughters. The only one that was delayed was for my first born girl, it was delayed but not querried. This is not to say however, every one of us is a lucky as i was. I have honestly seen those who have toiled to no success to get identification documentations issued to them.
On the flipside, there are some 'foreigners' not deserving who have 'secured' Ugandan documents and have adversely harmed our Ugandan nationality reputations abroad. NIRA and Immigration has a responsibility to prove that one is a deserving national to get the passport n ID.
I strongly stand behind such an advocacy group that will help voice our concerms and prove to NIRA and passport control office that we r not trying to unlawfully acquire citizenship we dont deserve. The government is and has been supportive and we appreciate if more is done.

Thank you for the programme. Presenter, you have over pressed the issue of "tracking" lineage. In my 60s, I grew up in Jinja town and we had Somali families and mixed race families. There were grand parents and even a few great grand parents and we mixed freely with children in these families. There was Abdultif, possibly the most famous kyotara youth. He could be seen criss crossing the streets and their grocery shop on main street was a beehive of shopping activity. We had Bora Uzima hotel right on our family block of flats on Oboja rd and Tea room on Lubas road both owned by well known Bakyotara families who had been around for more than half a century!. The "Indian" in the clip is a homeboy in Bugiri. Hon Basaliirwa will testify that before he was born, families of Abakyotara had lived in the town for over 50 years. Discrimination has no place in this world, no matter who does it to whom. To the NIRA team, as you endeavour to verify citizenship, do not cause undue anguish to bona fide Ugandans who find themselves born in those circumstances. Identity crisis is something that is faced by many people.

These people shouldn't be discriminated because Bachootala is being of mixed blood it's all over the world. Even in UK, CANADA, AMERICA also in Africa so long as people are from different countries or tribes.

Sometimes we act as victim of racism but we are worse in practice...Ministry of Internal affairs should own up its responsibility and serve all Ugandans regardless of their race as long as they qualify.

It's actually not the constitution there's no article in the Constitution that declares a person of color non Ugandan nor does it declare all Ugandans should have native names besides as per history 98% of Ugandans are actually immigrants (sst history)

@@jaseminephat4953 "envious of our looks" ☺☺☺, well if that were the case then most banyankole, batooro, banyoro, bafumbira wouldn't get identification - as i said, there are criteria they follow - every Ugandan has a unique name that identifies their tribe and clan... most of you bachotara have exotic names which confuse the team at the internal affairs, the combination of exotic names and physical appearance makes them scrutinize further hence asking for more details to prove your lineage... that's all, nothing complicated - instead of crying foul simply follow whatever they ask and you will get your papers.
