This was my favorite scene, the blocking was wonderful. The complete subversion of expectations too, Anjin expects a "prostitute" but instead finds an incredibly insightful, considerate person who immediately identifies what he and Mariko actually want and doesn't hesitate to try and facilitate that in the most graceful way imaginable.
Shōgun just keeps raising the bar with each new episode. I appreciate this release format because I honestly think this is the best way to view incredible television, but I hate the idea of having to wait a week for the next episode. That ending has me ready to dive into the 3rd act of this incredible show. Yet another phenomenal episode! 👏🏽
Thank you for making Cosmo watch Remains of the Day. That was the perfect directing choice. Everyone in that scene played it perfectly. It was so beautifully painful. I also caught your direction of all the characters in the morning after scene. Genius.
This is definitely an episode of women's prowess! I'd like to bring attention to Ms. Yuka Kouri's stunning performance as Kiku the prostitude. The way she delievered "the speech" before inviting Blackthorne is so soothing and comforting, almost like a gentle, benign-looking hypnotism of the guest she is about to entertain. Ms. Kouri's portrayal really convinced me why she got this difficult role.
I loved the arty touch at the willow house, where the courtesan disappeared behind mariko. The translated words became sensually offered to blackthorn, as if they originated from mariko.
During this period, it was common for the daughters and sons of many feudal lords to marry for political reasons. Some of them later turned against each other, which shows how warlike this period was. In this period, Japan was a group of 68 countries with more than 300 feudal lords, and although the show makes it very simple, there were many battles and politics in each of them. Even today, there are statues, graves, and places related to the feudal lords in various places where they originated. It would be fun to visit such places when you travel in Japan.
This is the history of every single empire. Marriages were basically alliances to increase political clout and extend empire. It's been going on for thousands of years

Another great episode! I will say, that I am enjoying the differences between the book and the changes they have made in this iteration. There were some that I was sad to see not included, but for the most part, it's been great. I was wondering how they would spin the tale of Ochiba hating Toranaga. Interesting way to do it! However, I do wonder if what the reason in the book will make an appearance in the show! Looking forward to it!
Bro mama-san is the most beautiful woman in this entire show. I will die on that hill. That pale make up, her smile, her black hair…just stunning and mystical in every aspect.
I think it’s better that way. So many resources went into the making of just 10 episodes…the end result was a masterpiece that will be remembered for years to come, I’m sure; not only because of its association with the novel, but because of its own merit as well.
I actually wholeheartedly agree with you sometimes you make something really really good and it just needs to be a one and done. Especially because this is a historical fiction novel I understand one season I’m sure Shōgun will be remembered long after release and that’s all I could ask for but I guess I was getting greedy aha and I wanted more.
An interesting aspect of the relationship between ochiba and mariko was when ochiba said to mariko, i never understood you. I thought it was because mariko kept herself in the 8-fold fence. While ochiba was more open and obvious, even though she is conning and manipulative to men. It would seem mariko will always have the open hand if the two were to tangle as fate would have it. I think it will come to them being the most influential in this war that’s just begun. I think toranaga understands mariko’s talents.
I bet obicho is pretending to say attack Toranaga to make council destroy itself 3d chess style. The way she convinced that council leader by say9ng Toranaga was the planner of the assassination was dope manipulation

Have loved the episodes till now but this one was pretty disappointing. Such a strange deviation from the book, especially the tea house scene. Also, why is Mariko so depressed in the show? A lot of her strength came from her ability to take joy from life in the book, despite her past. Why is toranaga so dull and sombre too while the character in the book was quite lively and from what we know of tokugawa ieyasu, not a dull presence at all. Some great acting but the writing leaves a lot to be desired, especially considering how differently clavell wrote about these characters.

Every episode has been great so far but this one was straight garbage. Pretty much all filler until the last few parts of the episode. Don’t know why it’s getting so much praise
It’s a setup episode. They’re setting up pieces and context before the big battle and finale. It’s pretty typical for the 3rd to last episode of any season to have a ‘slow’ pace, as they get you ready for the last 2 episodes that contain the most action, and they spend more time & money on. They’re trying to get the backstory out of the way. To some extent, i agree, this episode wasn’t as dense, interesting, or as dynamic compared to what they’ve done thus far.
@@J_McPhearsom I’ve liked every episode so far but we had the build up and then the escalation with the cannon incident saying this means war, but then they didn’t follow up with it. That was a massacre of the Tea House story compared to the book. All the romance and eroticism gone. So much was left out and it was so important for Blackthorne and Mariko’s relationship.
