@@surlechapeau Michael McDonald is great at what he does, but I think it was very much a big shocker to Doobie Brothers fans when they heard his voice and the type of music it was. I have better memories of the earlier period.
Doobie Brothers were such a fantastic and talented band, that is why every song was a hit! I think I love this one until I hear the next one, and then that one becomes my favorite. That is the kind of band they were, always giving so much of their selves in every song!!
Love that you love the Doobies. They were a very unique band. Very musical and still making noise after all these years. I bought my first Doobies album in 1971.
Jesus Is Just Alright With Me, and so are the Doobie Brothers, my mother turned me on to this band when I was 10, ever since I can remember we always had rock and roll playing in our house
A million years ago I ran into Pat Simmons in an antique store in Saratoga, CA. He was looking at a VERY expensive Tiffany lamp. I was totally star struck and just stared at him!
Yet another song that proves what a fantastic band the Doobie Brothers are. They were up there with the greatest bands ever. This song demonstrates how much they could put into a song with its changing tempo and wonderful harmonies.
From their 1972 album Toulouse Street, this is one of the few songs they didn't write. They heard The Byrds cover this song in 1969 and decided to do their version. Their version is distinguished by guitarist Pat Simmons, who sang lead on "Black Water", preaching the vocals "Jesus , He's my Friend". This song made it to Number 35 on The Billboard Hot 100's. Such a great tune, with great guitars, organs and vocals, and great tempo that just keeps you interested. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Finally! Somebody reacted to this song! I've recommended it so many times when someone goes down the Doobie Bros rabbit hole, and it always gets ignored. That guitar riff! Chefs kiss! So metal!
The first time I heard the phrase, JESUS IS JUST ALRIGHT WITH ME. It came from a stoner in high school. I didn't know what he meant, but the way he said through his drug filled haze it made perfect sense. He told me it was the current song by the Doobie Brothers and that it was really cool. And that afternoon on the radio I heard it. And I couldn't agree more. 👍 My favorites from them are TKAE ME ON YOUR ARMS AND ROCK ME, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC, ROCKING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, and TAKING IT TO THE STREETS. The last song with Michael McDonald on lead vocals. Enjoy
Great song! Rockin' Down the Highway, Take Me In Your Arms, The Doctor, Nobody, and Taking It To The Streets, are all outstanding songs they also sing!
The Chrstian rock group DC Talk also did a cover of this song. What made The Doobies great was their attention to the vocals, they were always spot on. The Eagles, Three Dog Night, Hall and Oates and a few others were were similar in this way. Doobies were also one of the few big bands with two drummers. The Allman Brothers Band was another one with two drummers.
First time I heard this song was in a Religion course in college in 87. The Professor would begin each class with a song from a boombox and start a discussion. Kind of the same thing you do here. 😀
