- Soon after immigrating from Bari, Italy to Rockford, Illinois, Vito Grisanzio began making pizza. 54 years later, he can still be found working hard in the kitchen of Capri Restaurant in downtown Rockford. In this video we talk with his son, Vito Grisanzio, Jr. to try and figure out just how many pizzas his father has made so far during his impressive career.

I'm 44 and I remember standing in the window watching him make pizza when I was little. It's amazing he's still at it. I live in Portland, OR now and as obsessed as this town is with pizza we have nothing like what you find in Rockford. Vito is such a treasure.
Also, hafta just say this. Since I haven't lived in Illinois in over a decade and people sound so different here it's easy for me to hear that his accent had both Italian and Northern Illinois notes to it. Like a perfect blend of the two. 😄
Vito is a legend. His restaurant is an institution in Rockford. The food, not just the pizza, is exceptional. I go to Capri at least three times a month and have done so for decades. Vito is ALWAYS there. Please, don’t ever change a thing. It’s a friendly, warm and tasty constant in my life.
Are you related to him?
Man I miss capri
Moved out of Rockford about 4 years ago but still visit family every couple of months, and make sure to grab a pizza from Capri. Simply the best.
How is the the repair coming along after the fire of 2022? Love your Restaurant ! 💜
Great food we stop at the Capri every time we go north to visit the wife’s family. I grew up in Rockford and have many fond memories.
Love this video and love Capri.
Hey, thanks!
Nice work. Makes us want to learn more!
More pieces coming in the new year.
The most amazing thin crust is at Capri. They are pizza geniuses. Once a year I go from San Fran to Rockford for the double sausage pizza at Capri. Californians don't know anything about pizza.
Yeah there are no quality pizza places ANYWHERE in the state of California. Spare us with that ridiculous bullshit that Chicagoans have been saying for decades. It’s the maker not the city and California has plenty of outstanding pizza makers just like every other state.
Is this considered tavern style or Chicago thin crust style?
It is more Sicilian style. Not sure how to classify it other than tasty.
@@OurCityOurStory Cheese to edge and cut in squares is Chicago thin. What type of flour is used? I grew up eating at Villa Capri, but in TX, I can't get as often as I want.
@@rickcash3065 Not sure of the ingredients.
