lol. why watching if you dont want yo put in the work.... you can do this from "scrap" wood. like pellets and stuff.... what will make it to practacly free.... money saved to buy the stuff you cant buildt easy
There's many ways to build a hive although personally I don't find with complicated for someone who knows basic carpentry I think alot would enjoy doing it themselves. Although it's definitely not for everyone.
There is always enough time in the day to flip to one of your videos and be instructed by an artisan thinker on how to make the near worthless valuable and worthwhile. Best regards and deepest thank you for all the time you spend doing this.
hello friend, I want to have a beekeeping box like you have. because I'm also a beekeeper, but a traditional beekeeper from the province of Bengkulu, Indonesia. I'm glad to see your video, modern beekeeper
When you trapped the wood between the saw blade and the fence at 6:22 in the video, it created a very dangerous situation. The wood can bind and shoot out the back at high speed. The scar on my belly is an indication I learned the hard way. Nice box, be careful. Great use of innovative solutions to achieve results.
@@ScrapwoodCity This happens to me too. 😂. Also picked up some timber for making a beehive. I think I will start with a jig for the finger joints. And do the frames with my scroll saw.
Damn fine job making your hive bodies out of real wood. If you had a real good table saw you could make a sliding gizmo to cut those box joint cuts and a good dado set. But you have the right idea. I like the good old ways myself. Free lumber and boards can be had fairly easily. Glue and biscuits are cheap enough. Good tools are always an investment in a craftsman's shop. Better to buy tools than to pay for someone else's labor at a high price.
While I would have approached this a bit differently, your ingenuity is outstanding. Thanks for posting, it's always great to see how to make things with what you have instead of what you can buy. I hope your bees are very happy in their new hive!
Thank you very much. I made this build for a friend beekeeper. It was really interesting process for me. I think the bee's are doing well at the moment. Perhaps I'll make a video someday after the hive stayed on the field for a few months!
This is just superb, I have been researching "make your own beehive box" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Tiyia Beehive Basophilic - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my partner got cool results with it.
Many thanks, I've been looking for "build beehive woodpile" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Tiyia Beehive Basophilic - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my neighbour got great results with it.
This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "step by step beehive construction" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Tiyia Beehive Basophilic - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my m8 got amazing success with it.
Fantastic. I am now convinced. I will start saving up to buy a biscuit cutter, scroll saw, band saw, or planer, chisels glue, screws and ancillary equipment, probably a mortiser selection of clamps and workshop to house it all. Not forgetting to install electricity and a kettle so I can have a brew whilst waiting for the glue to dry. Or should I just buy a hive? Probably not as satisfying but ill go the second route. Great video though.
lol! This is a video mate, you don't have to reproduce it in real life. I just had the urge to make a hive just to study the way it's made. Every project is also a good excuse for me to share techniques through my videos! Of course buying one is a better solution, but making one is much more inspiring!
Using titles, or adding narration, or both would add a lot to your video for the viewer. A brief explanation of what part you're making, etc. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I have tried adding voice over, it was too much work for me and the reward was people's bad comments. So I stopped it. Nowadays I use titles if necessary. But I always have a link in the description leading to a blog article with more details on the build.
Obviously a Union Worker - taking the longest and most inefficient route to make something that could have been done in 1/3 the time. Side-note biscuits don't make a stronger joint. But they do add material and cost, so another union move. :)
Obviously I did not followed the shortest path! I used biscuits for the glue up not for strength! I just have one question. What is a "Union Worker"! Sorry I am Greek and I am not familiar with the term!
He’s using the tools he has and he didn’t do a bad job, I learned a lot from watching this so I appreciate he took the time to make this for all of us, there’s always a judgmental nit pick that comes along, why don’t you tell him what he’s doing wrong and help the guy instead of labelling him a “union worker” whatever the fuck that means.
@@fluffyhead6377 Fluffy you may be illiterate you wrote "why don't you tell him what he's doing wrong and help the guy" um, that's exactly what I did. wow just wow lol
The Plain Truth You only pointed out what he is doing wrong you didn’t say what he should of done instead, nothing you said was actually helpful is the point I was trying to make.
Pretty cool. However, instead of all that long labor intensive dovetailing for the side, maybe make your own jig using Steve Ramsey's method to save yourself HOURS.
Do you have a link, or know the name of the type of bottom board you made? One of my hives has that style of solid bottom with screen, but I apparently fail at teh googles and can't find plans, and didn't see any on your site. I've tried the other style and I don't like it. TIA.
kinda got the jist of it. got a perfect place in the woods. it's flourishing nicely will flowers, i'm attempting to craft some natural mead from pure honey, yeast, and maybe berries. recently got into glassblowing too, made some nice brown bottles with corks. wouldn't you like to bite off the top of a bottle and slam down a brew. you'd be a lot warmer and happier will a belly full of mead.
Can you please name me the tool that you used in 6:25 ? And the one in 07:08 ? Great work !!!Thank you for sharing!!! I hope i will be able to build it like you!
I meant the one that is in your hand when you work with the table saw... the one that holds it when you push it towards the table saw.Sorry for bad english and explanation.
Humans aren't evolved to consume honey nor is it healthy! quit being discourteous/impulsive! Me an my good friend build these for the sake of bees an the future for generations & so far we've made about 7 of them in about a few month time period.
Shane Bennett No, the bees don't heat the hive. They only heat the brood in the summer and the beeball (idk the english term) with the queen in the middle in the winter. So within the hive is the same temperature as outside in the winter.
боюсь даже представить сколько времени угрохает, чтобы хотя бы сделать десяток, к тому же многие вещи делает больно сложно можно проще и будет надежнее
Thank you. No they don't build on top! This design of hive works in Greece for ages! I am not a beekeeper, I made this for a friend and he gave me one of his best hives to study! :)
I wish you included explanations. I am a complete newbie and don't even know what some of those tools are. A quick explanation of the step, tools, and measurements would really be helpful.
You can find a link in the description of the video that leads to blog article with much more info on the build. But no measurements. Measurements are pretty standard and you will easily find them with google search.
I enjoyed the build, but as a veteran beekeeper, I can tell you that your top has way too much space in it. Your bees will build burr comb all over it. If you want it for top ventilation, I'd suggest you cover the inside of it with #8 hardware cloth.
Thanks. I hope the beekeeper I gave it too, will let me see it after a year in the field. I think I will learn many things after that. Thanks for your suggestion I will do some research on it! :)
Look up "bee space". Usually it's about 3/8", any more than that and they will fill it with comb. I enjoyed your video though and really like your handhold jig. I need to build one of those.

I appreciate that you used real wood working techniques a jointery, good job.

I never thought to use a circular saw and a jig to make the grab handle, a great idea and well made hive.
Why didn’t you use the saw table to cut your joints? Would have been much easier, great job by the way, love your use of the saw to cut the hand holds

Wouldn't a rabbet joint be better for this, easer and exposes less of the end grain to the elements.
I think you really need the strength of the box joints. Many times you have to lift a fully loaded with honey hive.
