Thanks for clarifying that Broadchurch isn't BBC, guys! It aired here on BBC America though, so I was ya know, half-right. Be sure to send HP1 cartoons or art to my Twitter, @blockbustedpod, to get it featured on the channel!
It's usual that a "local" television channel that doesn't have an international signal sells its most famous series to those who do have that signal. Or it is also possible that this international channel, to have more sales in its international signal, decides to buy those famous programs to put them outside the country. It's a business issue.
Broadchurch could have easily become some cheap "investigation" series, like we've seen so many before. But it chose to focus on the characters, their minds, their interractions with each other or the human nature confronted to dramatic events. Broadchurch is phenomenal just for that.
One of my favorite things is the slow-motion, shaky (sort of shaky?) cam close-ups on moments of anxiety if you know what I'm talking about. Mentions of Sandbrook slow the world down around Alec Hardy, and disorient him, which is reflected in the cinematography. When Beth runs across the beach to find Danny, the frame is really chaotic and close to everything, somethings in focus, some things out, and switches from real-time to slow motion and then back to real-time. The way they show Alec's condition is brilliant too, doing similar really close-up slow-motion shots, sometimes only showing pieces of his face or body. I don't know much phrasing so my description is a bit off but yeah. Broadchurch to me is just a show to watch if you're interested in ANY aspect of television. The writing is incredible, the acting couldn't be better, the cinematography is gorgeous and perfect. As someone interested in all these things, it's just the perfect show to study, honestly.
The score in Broadchurch is so amazing. It's great how we can both find what we love about this show. You find the cinematography, I find the music composition. I love it.
Really late reply but the composer is my favourite composer of all time - Olafur Arnalds! He has such a somber yet peaceful tone throughout all of his compositions that never fail to make me feel too many things.
@@Megnappinidae Absolutely! I have a whole playlist of his, and tried to go see him in Chicago a couple of years ago but unfortunately couldn't make it. I really hope he comes back.
Awesome, I love Broadchurch! The writing and the acting are great, but the visuals and the soundtrack are what *really* blew my mind when I first saw it!
This show is the first show ever that took my breath away witn its cinematography The moments when Alec has flashbacks, the water, the music, the pace ... don't remember how many times I rewatched those scenes Great show!
This is an excellent video essay. Broadchurch was an outstanding series, I was riveted by every episode. I am often aware of how mirrors and reflections are used in tv and cinema. I first noticed this device when I saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry's reflection is used many times in different ways. I have just discovered your channel and I am enjoying your opinions and insights.
I haven't seen the second season (wasn't as interesting to me as the first one) but I remember watching it as it was being aired on BBC America and loving it. The plot is so subtle and capturing and i didn't realize how much the visuals play into that.
Amazing analysis, you brining up the subject of the negative space and its meaning immediately reminded me of Mr Robot, which uses this technique in an incredible way to transpire that exact emotion of loneliness, isolation and emptiness against a bigger structure.
Really enjoyed this video. I think the first series of Broadchurch is pretty much perfect. I feel like an entire video could be dedicated to various aspects including one of my favourites: the music. I've been listening to the Olafur Arnalds score solidly since the show's release. Another British show I'd love to hear your thoughts on is Luther. The cinematography is stunning and I often notice characters being positioned in the extreme right corner of the frame. Especially Luther whenever he enters the lift to his flat. Has a really visceral/off-kilter feeling. Mr Robot does it too.
I noticed that at the beginning of episode 1x8 there is a character who appears in a very constricted space (under the bed) and it makes total sense when you later learn more about him.
Excelent. I don't know why some have to compare and worst it to minimize this series versus Mr. Robot, if Broadchurch was first and it's a masterpiece.
Yes, good tv shows rival and even surpass some movie's cinematography. Don't forget Broadchurch's production design which plays a significant role. Good point on the negative space effect which is typically used in most movies to denote that something is about to happen there. Well done and keep up your film making!
Loved, loved, loved this video! If I may, I would love it if you gave sense8 a go. It's a beautiful show on Netflix, its cinematography is something special and I would love someone who knows about this stuff to comment on it. Great essays, keep them coming!
There is a tv show on in Britain that is trying to replicate the Broadchurch atmosphere and camerawork but it is written so terribly and shot so shoddy that it is laughable. In series 3 of Broadchurch they handle the subject matter of rape and handle it very successfully, this show is focused on the same subject matter but throws it right in your face and has the most cliche dialogue about it. No characters are likeable and they had the opportunity to make an interesting statement but even failed to do that and went the obvious and boring route. The show is called Liar and it just proves that writing is really everything.

I love that this show is getting some quality, critical recognition. Wonderful video!!

I recently finished the series 1, for the third time. And I loved your video. It's so awesome the way you analyzed this. Congrats!
Thank you for talking about broadchurch! I absolutely love it so much. It's a rollercoaster of emotions.
First season of this is one of the best TV shows ever made.
This show is a great example of high quality work

Thankyou for introducing me to Broadchurch Houston! one of the best TV i've experienced in recent memory
God, this was a good show.

0:33 Hate to be that guy but Broadchurch is ITV not BBC
I bet it was on BBC America in the states. I could look it up but can't be bothered.
yeah, I'm pretty sure it would have been on BBC America, but originally produced for ITV in the UK, so very easy mistake to make.
it just seems like it would be BBC because it uses the same slate of British actors and writers as every single show on the BBC does
It’s on BBC America.
@@artspooner it is :D
Llllove the show, the characters and the cinematography. Still waiting for season 3 in my country

How could anyone compare Broadchurch with Mr Robot?
Awesome video. I'm so excited that Jodie Whittaker is the new Doctor.
Dude! Loved this, I’m going to have to watch this show now.
Hey, I wonder who made that Scott Pilgrim Houston art. 🤔
haha, thanks a lot for that man! Included your Twitter handle so people can go follow you.
Broadchurch isn't the BBC, it's ITV. But lets hope this style continues to Doctor Who as Chibnell brings in a new team.
+Scott Honeywill eh, it aired on BBC America around me, so close enough lol.
And he failed...BIG time!

The first episode made me cry
Man this was great! Made me check the series out and I loved it. Great job :)

This is one of your best vids yet. Noice job
I gotta go watch that Goddamn
Thoughts on Doctor Who?
Chibnall shouldn’t have been made show runner! It’s mostly awful. And it’s a Shame for Jodie, as she’s capable of much better!
When is longbox breakup coming out?! 😆
Great Essay. Absolutly True. Loved the show.
Great video as always, I don't even look into things this much.
My man just wanted a hug
This is sooooooo "MR.Robot"(in terms of composition)
Don't be that person
This came before Mr Robot, so if anything Robot is so Broadchurch
best show ive seen on tv for years!
Right on.
Great video, my man! Keep at it.
Stunning
Please do this for Daredevil!!! It looks so gorgeous and the shots are amazing. Please
Breaking Bad?! How long was this video in the making? Breaking Bad ended in 2013.
Very good video !! I loved it 👍
great analysis!
I'm sad you didn't mention Mr Robot, as that's the most famous example manipulating the rule of thirds and negative space
Don't compare this masterpiece to Mr robot
2:10 Steven Universe's Beach city!! xD
Sherlock is ok. I think the show lost itself in Stephen Moffat's planet sized ego.
Incredible video. 💙
You should watch Twin Peaks
Did you watch Luther?
Just wanted to mention that the show wasn't made by the BBC, like you said. Other than that, great video...
Did Jake Paul write The title cuz it’s Selling like a god church
You wanna be a Director, Cinematographer and an Editor??? Damn, you'll be set in the film industry cause you'll never run out of work lmao
Ehm... yeah, Sherlock sucks, really bad.
Great work mate.
