I’m up to my nostrils in Nicolas Nickleby, at the moment, and love the genius of Dickens’ wit, satire, and sarcasm. I enjoyed Oliver Twist but I think I like this more. It’s good to see your smiling face, Katie! Happy New Year-all the best to you and Nick.
Thrilled to find this read along! Dickens has been my favorite author for many years, but since I still haven't read all of his novels I decided last fall on my own to read through all of them in publication order. Imagine my delight when finding Katie and this mega readalong! I have just begun The Old Curiosity Shop and absolutely loved Nickolas Nickelby. Can't wait for your response video, Katie! Thank you so much for your delightful videos.
I really like Nicholas Nickleby because it's just so much fun! It's easy reading, and the characters are quite colorful. It's not his greatest novel, but it's still very entertaining and super funny as well.
I’m reading along with the project and enjoying the discussions on Discord. Thanks for spearheading this readalong and encouraging us to tackle these masterpieces that sometimes seem a little daunting. Happy New Year 😎
Planning ahead a bit, I'd like to join along for the March reading of "The Old Curiosity Shop", which is the next Dickens that I would like to read. No one does Dickens like you Katie, thanks so much for all your efforts!!
I have started NN and somehow it is familiar but am sure I have not read it before. Because I was a little disappointed in Oliver I am now really looking forward to this one. I am loving this Dickens Readalong. Thanks and Happy 2023 to you.
Joining in again, I'm aiming not to miss any! Hopefully they won't take it off audible half way through this time - I had to speed through the end of Oliver Twist as well!
So far so good, it seems . . . I wonder if that just took off Oliver Twist because it's a very famous Dickens and gets the most downloads? Fingers crossed we'll be safe on the rest . . .
I started Nicholas Nickleby yesterday and read the first two chapters. This is my first read of this book and am looking forward to a change from Oliver Twist. I agree with your review of Oliver, I enjoyed it but liked other Dickens novels so much more. Happy New Year!
Thanks for this project, Katie! I will join in with reading 'Nichokas Nickleby'. It will be a reread for me after many years! The first and only time I read this book was 37 years ago, when reading Dickens in English was still a rather daunting task for me as a foreigner. I remember exactly when I read it, as I was then expecting my first baby. The only memory I still have of it is of the theatrical performances in the open air, if I am not mistaken. It will be an interesting revisit.
NN was the novel that really got me into reading Dickens, so I think it’s a great place to start for new readers. Apart from the immortal Pickwick Papers, NN is my favourite early (pre Copperfield) Dickens novel, so, Katie, I will be interested to see if it remains ‘one of your least favourite’ after this re-read! I have just arrived at Dotheboys Hall this time round….
I'm a good ways into NN and am really enjoying it. Off the bat, the episodic nature of it isn't my favorite. However, the characters jump off the page and there are some crazy beautiful passages. If I wasn't reading a library copy I would be highlighting them. Overall, I'm really enjoying it and discovering why Dickens is a favorite of so many. 😊
So, sort of yes! They did a revival of it in 2007/2008 (slightly shortened, I think, but it was still in two plays), which I saw on stage. I remember loving it a lot.
I'm not understanding how this works. Are you reading the book somewhere and are there videos of you doing so? I don't care too much about doing other media things. I just wanted to see the videos of reading Nicholas Nickleby.

I have just started Nicholas Nickleby and enjoying it so far! Thanks for this readathon to give me the bump to read it.
This is perfect! I was just scrolling through my audible library as I have a bit of a backlog of audiobooks and I already have Nicholas Nickleby 🎧
Happy new year Another great video

I’m reading along with the project, and loving it. Started Nick Nick on 1st January on audible read by Kobna Holbrook-Smith. It’s excellently read!

Thank you!
I watched the BBC rendition.
So Looking forward to reading NN❤
NN is my second favorite Charles Dickens novel, second only to Bleak House. Outstanding performance by CD.
i have my copy ready to go. Will also listen to audiobook whilst knitting.

I've read NN twice, a long time ago, so I'm looking forward to this group read.

There are indeed theatrical performances - I hope you enjoy it!

Nearly halfway through, I must say that it's excellent fun indeed.
Happy New Year Katie. I’ve just started NN & I am looking forward to it because unlike Dickens’s other novels I don’t know much about it.

There is a wonderful 2002? movie adaptation of this work , well worth a look.
A brilliant adaptation. Christopher Plummer is a marvellous Ralph.
Yes, I have seen it, though many year ago! I enjoyed it at the time.
Katie, have you seen the 80's RSC production of this? It is sublime, and helped me appreciate the novel on a whole other level.
Catherine Morland ;)

Crap I won’t be able to do this month I’ll try and do the next book 😭
We're reading Nicholas Nickleby over both January and February, if that helps!

My only experience with Nicholas Nickleby is the 2002 film.... I sincerely hope the book is nothing like that!
