    0:00 - Intro
0:48 - What is an ETF?
ETF is a basket of stocks that tracks something, eg basket of US stocks, basket of technology stocks.
    1:20 - Benefits of ETF
Warren Buffett trusted index funds so much that he even made a $1 million bet with hedge fund managers that the S&P500 index fund will beat them, and he won! Here are the benefits of investing into an index fund.
    1. Diversification
ETF has a lot of stocks in it. So even if 1 doesn’t do well, there are many others that will back it up. When you are buying into an ETF, you are betting that the entire index will do well, thus diversifying your risk.
    2. Self rebalancing
There are strict criterias to join an index. For example to join the S&P500, a company needs to be profitable for the last few quarters. This means any company that is consistently losing money will be removed from the index, then replaced with a better company.
    3. Low cost
An ETF has extremely low cost. For example VOO only has 0.03% expense ratio, while a mutual fund like Allianz Income And Growth has 1.54%. Over the long term, the fee will eat into the returns.
    4. Passive investing
When you invest in stocks, you have to do a lot of work, eg study the company, keep up to date with latest news, check stock price. But when you invest in an ETF, there’s nothing to do, other than to consistently invest your money. This saves you a lot of time.
4:52 - Which ETF to invest in?
    Growth of dividend focused
If you choose growth ETF like VUG, you will get higher returns. If you choose dividend ETF like VYM, you will receive passive income, but get a lower return. Another downside of dividend ETF from US is, there’s a 30% withholding tax on dividends. So you’ll be losing alot of money to taxes.

When it comes to investing with ETFs, the low cost ones are what we call BROAD INDEX funds. MSCI World, S&P 500 etc. Singapore is very small and the STI is called Super Terrible Index for a good reason. I'm invested into ISAC and WSML. 90/10 ratio for equities. ISAC is MSCI ACWI which includes the emerging markets. Not to be confused with MSCI World which only covers developed markets. The IWDA is an ETF that tracks MSCI World. WSML allows me to capture the world small cap companies. FYI, the small cap companies in WSML are larger than Singapore "large cap" that make up the STI ETF.

Not all ETFs have Low cost - active strategy ETFs like ARKK charge 75 basis points while passive strategy ETFs charge less as the latter only tracks the index

Will you recommend cashing out a property by taking a term loan and invest in s&p? Assuming an interest rate of 2% and s&p giving an annualised of 9%. We take a difference of 7%. Whats your take on this?

    • @louiswang8495
      @louiswang8495 2 роки тому

Instead of cashing out a property, why not take a margin loan from the broker? The rate of IB US is only 1.58%.

Hi Kelvin, what’s your take on covered call ETFs, such as JEPI and QYLD? Some have dividends that come in monthly and it may be a good way to get monthly income. I think it’ll be interesting to get a review on these other types of ETFs!

So how do you 'pay' for the expense ratio? Or it is automatically deducted?
