- Back in 2008 @esmeedenters made a name for herself with her cover videos on UA-cam. She became one of the first artists to get over 100 million views on her UA-cam page. She even got signed to Justin Timberlake’s label and she had a lot of success. However, all good things come to an end and she ended up working in a frozen yogurt show in London. Wanting to prove that her dream of becoming a successful singer is still very much alive, she decided to enter The Voice UK! What do you think of Esmée’s Blind Audition? when rita said 'this is crazy, this industry is crazy' i knew she meant it. it was not the greatest audition but getting dropped out after selling her own record and working alongside justin timberlake, there's a huge question mark in our modern day music industry.
As she said it's a business and she probably didn't want to sell herself out at the time. Kudos to her!

Well what really happened was Justin Timberlake settled for her after competing with Usher for Justin Bieber. After Usher won Bieber and he succeeded in the way that he did and Esmee didn't, it kind of made it much much harder for her.
That happens more often in the industry than you think. If you don’t sell your soul this happens.
I find her really humble, I feel like people are pre-judging because she had experience in the industry with high level artists. I don't think this song showcased her abilities though, she definitely has more of an R&B voice imo.
Esmee became a huge UA-cam icon when I was in the cusp of adulthood and independence, it's very emotional to think now that we both have our struggles when, at that time, we had heads full of dreams. ❤😢
This lady had an excellent pop album about ten years! Her voice is really well put together.

I used to follow her career and then it died and I lost touch. Glad to see she is up on her feet again and giving it another shot

Exactly, that's why Coldplay are the band they are, Chris Martin isn't a great singer but his songs resonate suit his style

I understand her, because it was a now or never thing. That she was so excited that her voice was not at it's best day.

With a different song choice, I think she would be great. But "yellow" just isn't ment to be oversung like that in my opinion. Gotta keep that simple and heartfelt.

Me too I used to watch her videos when I was a young teenager and I absolutely loved her. I'll always remember her singing dance with my father
tbh in my opinion she didn't sound as if she actually felt what she was singing, but more trying to do all the extra tricks to show what you have.. Reaaaaally hope she'll be able to get the most out of this new chance!

Personally I find it to be rare for an artist to *sound how they feel* as most generally just have a *go with the flow* type of sound. I would say Celine Dion is the best example for sounding how she feels.

@@fairyuls not much more than what i said, it was 6 years ago and she was eliminated even before the finals i think. Ever since she tried to start her career again by renting venues herself and trying to at least break even. And she pridu ed 5 songs on en EP.
Much has been said about her dismissal from timberlakes label but i understand she wanted to go in a different artistic direction and wasnt about to compromise. In later interviews she expressed she regretted not having been a bit more flexible on that.
After her dismissal other labels apparently did not want to touch her. 'Tainted goods' being ditched by Timberlake.
I fear she will be most remembered as the girl ditched by Timberlake rather than for one of her songs
As she is 32 now, this was 6 years ago. I understand she was eliminated and she is now self releasing her music.
I know nothing about the music industry but it seems that once you are 'tainted' the chance of being hired again is very very slim

@@TommyMLe except some don't drop you. They keep you on a leash. You can't get out of the contract but they won't actually publish your stuff. I know it's an unusual case to use as an example, but take a look at wat they did to Jojo

Justin timberlake destroyed her career. If justin bieber had chosen justin.T and not Usher and scooter he would have had the same fate as Esmee

I’m glad she didn’t gave up and tried again. Probably the wrong song choice here but she can sing, she got a really nice voice. With the right song she could be making hits again.

Don’t think she’s being arrogant or over confidents. Well she did had to impressed the judges. I’m glad they all turned around for her!

Yes I followed her too when she was big on UA-cam, even remembered when she signed with Justine Timberlake, then all of a sudden silence!! So I did a search for her and saw this Voice video! I wish her well!!
The things competition can do to people is just mind blowing to me. If Will hadn't turned, none of them would have. They would have rather let her go than let Will get her, coz Will's a player who knows the game. And his cheeky smile when all of them turned, was just poetic. That man's a real hustler. Respect ✌ ☮.
Its a Dutch thing.. she was trying so hard to be american and she came off a bit brash.. The look on Rickys face said it all. She gave an "Im too good for all of you vibe" which affects who coaches puck, and also who fans vote for

I didn't know this about her. Her song came out years ago, and I loved it straight away. Haven't listened to it in years and then just thought why did she disappear, now we know. The music industry is hard, where is she now?
Honestly, I'm not impressed with her voice.. I guess expected more from her...but just not what I was looking for... I wouldn't turn. But Congratulations..
In a way this is why I have respect for Simon Cowell (yea different show I know)... he see too many really good singer crash and burn, so rather than giving them false hope and wasted their life, he make harsh reality check on themselves so they can pursue other dream.

To keep it real i really respect Esmee and know she is an amazing artist but having said that i didnt feel it really came out in this audition and there are many 'non-celebrities' who havent had a chance yet that made a much stronger impression in their auditions.
Technique is there, but no emotional connection with the lyrics.
It was just the wrong song.

shocking pitch....you have to nail the pitch for a song with such a naked vocal with so many long held notes.
i had a feeling there was someone,maybe a director whispered on the judges ears that the auditionee was once an professional artist and they should turn.

Yellow is my favourite Coldplay song. I had to double check the title of the video, because I just couldn't connect what the lady on the screen was singing with my memory of the song.
It's all about the grab , all of the judges knew that she's deadly so they were just waiting to see the move

that's only your belief, your *opinion,* not a fact for all..and many who sing like that do well in their work and many do not..as MOST singers do not make a living at it, no matter their vocal style or what millions think..because millions like and millions dislike each and every one who is successful career-wise..even billions of people like or dislike any given performer..so, at the end of the day, it's ONLY a matter of what each listener PREFERS.

Agreed, it felt like a lot for me. Sara Bareilles does a cover of Yellow as well. Really stripped back and vulnerable. Gives me goosebumps.
I agree with a lot of the comments here: Her performance has no soul. Couldn't watch it till the end.

I needed a second to remember who she was... the name sounded familiar but couldnt figure it out immediately. Hell... I also remember now that she did a song with the band Stanfour ( actually I wonder what happened to them)... I used to listen to their song all day every day. But I didnt do it in a long time though. I think everyone thought she would become very very big back in the day.
Honestly, I was surprised even one turned around. It was so pitchy and she tried to cram way too much into the song and didn't do any of the techniques well. I thought it was maybe just nerves, but since she was professional, she should have had a handle on that.

What people do not know is that the participants are presented with a number of numbers from which they can choose and if other participants can choose first, there is not much left, moreover Esmee had to be present early in the morning at 08.00 and it was her turn last. this was at 22.30 in the evening
She didn't connect to the song so her performance didn't connect to the audience. She raised the technical aspect too much that the emotional aspect was lost. Anxiety does that; especially, to those who have fallen from a high place.

Honestly surprised they turned round, this was a poor performance especially if she has been a pro before. Smacks of a fix. Her youtube covers were much better.

What's wrong with her attitude? She is honest and she knows what she wants. That is the best attitude for a woman. If she is gonna be waiting she may never achieve anything.

I never knew her before but you can tell her attitude from when she was talking to Ricky...saying that he is a charmer...and she has a boyfriend that will kick his butt. Obviously Ricky was trying to tell her how her music made him feel. And then when she is giving thanks to all...she said...and thanks Ricky for making a great attempt / pitch. If a person sings and the judges turn, that person should show being thankful and respectful. Confidence can be great but believing in yourself and yet being humble is much better because we never stop learning...except when we believe that we know it all.
To be fair, Justin Timberlake does have an history of mistreating women in the industry and having misogynistic tendencies

People hate on this performance yea it wasn’t the best but the judges knew there was potential and she was nervous like come on she had a failed career and get kicked out the industry you wouldn’t just make the greatest come back after that there is a high possibility for nerves to kick in front of the crowd all over again
It's interesting to find out what her backstory is. She sounded quite confident when talking to the coaches ("I have a boyfriend that'll kick your ass", seriously? :-) There's a page on Wikipedia about her. Looks like she's still putting out music in 2020.

I remember that when this was aired people hated her because of that confident talk with the coaches. Sometimes it seems like people is cocky but I feel like she was just joking. That season was full of talent and she wasn't as good as the other ones.
In Holland that type of joking is normal. Guess she's still Dutch inside..

I hate to be the one to put a dampener on things, but her voice wasn’t that amazing. I think there was psychology at play that caused all the judges to turn. Rita Ora definitely wasn’t going to turn. She hesitated and looked reluctant when she finally hit the button.

At first, I was like, I love this song and I love Esmeé, but this is not the best song to showcase her voice. Not that she didn't do well, but I would have liked to hear her sing something else. So anyway, I've loved Esmée ever since I first heard her song, "Admit it." And to this day, I'll still bust it out when I'm in a singing mood. Like today! That's how I ended up here. Until now, I had no idea that she had appeared on the Voice. I really hope that this time she gets all that she dreams of and more, because she is a terrific singer and she really deserves it.
