Auntie, thank you. I've never heard of this.
Oh yes.. Very good 👍
Tastes good in pickling sauce.
I just got rakkyo onions here in Australia delivered today. So excited to grow these.
would you mind me asking where you got them mate? would love to source some
Wonderful vlog.....do you ever raise Vadalia Onions, sweet and mild. How about garlic? Perhaps you can share pickling the onions.....I think I will try growing onions this year in addition to my lowly peppers....😊
With garlic, one of the ways you can tell they are ready to harvest is that half of the leaves turn brown and the plant flops over. Does this not apply to onions and other alliums? I know I harvest green onions and chives before they reach full maturity for best taste. In my experience, when the green onions get big and start to form a white pom pom flower filled with seeds they are way past the best time to harvest and eat. I never really checked to see if their is a bulb beneath the leaves. I guess I will now that I've seen this video. Interesting stuff!
Thank you for this. I've been super hesitant with growing onions but this was good!😊
I love this video on onions!!🧅💚🌱
Growing onions just can't get any easier to me. haa
I've heard of Rakkyo onions before and been wanting to try them, thought they would be a nice addition and now I really want to try them. I'm harvesting bunching onion and red bulbing types right now, hoping for at least 50 kilos of bulbs from the bulb types and have 80 bulbs of garlic put away and I've a patch of top set walking onions, garlic chives and chives so they would probably feel right at home. Thank you for sharing and may you have a successful season.
thanks for the video. Had noticed these onions before on other videos but never seen them in local stores here unfortunately. Wonder how big the red onion will end up being in that small pot?. Planning to do the same myself :D...
Awesome!
Oh, they are available in Borneo, i ordered some during lockdown, now it is one of my fave allium. It is called lokio, bawang batak or losun. Nowadays, easy to find in Peninsular Malaysia. Rakkyo is prolific, 1 bulb multipled like 15 to 20, twice a year :).
Currently i'm looking for Thai bunching onion, they have several but the one i want have pearl like bulb, like rakkyo but round, kinda like pearl
I think the one you forgot the name is Welsh Onion.
I’ve trialed loads of Alliums in containers, but not all of them appreciate my Puerto Rican climate. Rakkyo has been bulletproof for me, handling my very worst neglect like a champ. Most boreal bulbing types have done poorly for me, even when babying them with care... I’ve killed off Softneck and Hardneck Garlic, Elephant Garlic, Potato Onions and Gray Shallots. Welsche Onions, Walking Onions, I’itoi Onions, Canada Onion (surprisingly), Multiplier Leeks, Chives and Garlic Chives have all done well for me. Society Garlic is another tough one that I recommend, and I’ve had success growing Garlic Vine (not an Allium, but it has the garlic flavor, and beautiful flowers). I still need to try dehydrating and powdering the vine’s leaves, they seem too tough to use fresh (kinda like Bay leaves).
Wonderful info! What's the scientific name of Garlic Vine? Sounds really interesting! Yes, Rakkyo is super easy to grow! Glad you experienced the same! :D
@@wendiland Garlic Vine is Mansoa alliacea
