Grizzly vs Black Bear

- Опубліковано 28 лип 2012
- So today I had the most amazing wildlife encounter. I was driving a bus full of people on the David Thompson highway in Alberta, Canada and got stopped for an hour due to a motorcycle accident that happened when a biker stopped to see a bear on the side of the road and was hit by another biker. (a lot of road rash and maybe some broken bones but they survived). Turns out the little black bear was in the tree because a huge grizzly bear was at the bottom of the tree trying to get him (or her?). We watched the poor little black bear hang on for dear life and make a number of attempts to get away. I had to leave before the end of this encounter and I can only hope the black bear made out okay although his chances did not look good.
Update: August 29, 2012.
I've had some feedback from Parks Canada staff and others (see comments below)
It seems most likely that the black bear was never in any serious danger at all. The grizzly bear probably had a carcass (deer or elk) in the bushes and the black bear kept trying to get a piece for itself. Of course, the grizzly bear was having none of it as you can see in the video. So, it turns out the grizzly was just keeping the black bear away from its food.and not stalking the black bear at all. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

Not sure what's more amazing, how fast the black bear climbs up the tree, or how fucking huge that grizzly is
Definitely a 9 legendary. Ifyyk
Black bears are huge, like 500lbs easy! So imagine the grizzly
@@AneesSarwar34 black bears are not huge, they are typically the size of a regular adult man. Brown bears are much larger and often eat black bears in territories where they overlap.
@@Eric-zs6rd that’s still scary, but their size can be as big as a bengal tiger too, but even at average weight it’s very dangerous. Not to mention their claws are sharp af!
@@AneesSarwar34 They can be, but those are record size black bears in Alaska or something. Most of the lower 48 black bears are around 100-200 lbs. We get a lot of them here in Washington. They sometimes come up and eat the blackberries in my backyard, I scare them off before I let the dogs out.

Yeah, it's a common way humans mask and crippling fear. That woman had a lot of it.
I used to climb up trees like that when I was younger, after showing my report card to my father.

Me too, before waking up!

Seeing them together really gives another prespective of how massive grizzly's are
Yet the polar bear is even bigger than the grizzly 😮
The bear now knows what it feels like to be chased by a bear.
True. He's in as much danger as we would be of him. Still, I don't want to see him get hurt🐻
It’s amazing how a moron laughing can be more brutal then two bears fighting
@budman30k Why do you think she is a moron?
The moron was the worst part.
Rumor has it Black Bear still remains in that tree to this day
Eve Black bears can't catch a break...
Then that same rumor should include that the grizzly is still at the bottom of that tree...
As a carcass
Rumor has it that the saying "rumor has it" was played out in the mid 80's😕
Grizzly: Probably eats a black bear cub.
Black bear: Risks it's life in desperate and failed attempt of saving it.

That black bear was probably 300-400lbs...no slouch itself. Black bears are incredibly powerful, though they don't have the sheer size they are more dangerous in some ways because they are more agile and can climb trees (no escape).
Black bears actually get bigger than grizzlies
@@NYPrepper that black bear was definitely not 300-400lbs... wasn't even a full grown black bear.
Note to self, when confronted with a black bear DO NOT climb a tree to get away. I think I would lose that race. Man they're fast.
They're also massively faster than Usain Bolt on land so good luck out running them.
Maximum 777 He did say "when confronted with a black bear". He knew which one he was referring to.
Actually, grizzlies can climb trees. As juveniles they can climb just as well as a black bear. As adults, they can still climb, they just use branches rather than climbng the main trunk like blacks... It's not uncommon.
Maximum 777 That's quite alright.
Grizzly bear, black bear, polar bear... they’ll catch you.
The grizzly was definitely feeding on something down there, but it was dark and small, and I can't help but think that it was a black bear cub. If the one in the tree was it's mother, it would explain her persistence. Out of instinct, she would've been trying to draw the grizz away from her cub, but not get herself killed either. That's the only thing that makes sense to me. That looked like a fresh kill too, because the grizz was still rubbing itself on it, which is what they do to mark a fresh kill with their scent. It's their way of saying, "Property of This Grizzly. Leave it alone!"
Any black bear, unless it is stone cold starving and desperate, is not going to try and bug a grizzly at its kill. Grizzlies commonly predate on black bears, and black bears therefore AVOID grizzlies whenever possible. Maternal instinct is very strong in bear however, and mother sows will risk their lives for their cubs.
interesting thought
I knew it wasn't a small black bear, but that makes perfect sense.
I agree with your analysis - nature in the raw
Dockinabox stop trying to make people feel sad..lol
Dockinabox mama bear would rather die than lose her cub. No way she watches a Grizzlie feed on her cub.
I love how at first you don’t even really see the grizzly, you just know he’s there because his shadow looms over the black bear like some sort of horror movie monster you can’t get a clear shot of.
What? You can see him the whole time. Anything not shaped like a rock or tree is pretty easy to pick up on if you spend any time in the wilderness.
The grizzly was on the ground sleeping. It pops its head up when the black bear first moves off the branch it's standing on. It looks around, then puts its head down again. It's lying down on its right side, facing to the right, and even looks at the camera at one point. 1:04
If I was that Black bear, I would just go ahead and start building a treehouse to live up there forever, because that damn grizzly is huge!
I love how everyone agreed the woman laughing was annoying and also agreed to let her get murdered by grizzly. Lol
That woman almost made me think there were laughing hyenas in the woods of North America. She is very annoying.
You must laugh with a lovingly sound for sure

My wife and I were there that day photographing the event. The grizzly definitely killed and ate a black bear cub. In the end the grizzly buried what was left of the black bear cub and left. The black bear sow then climbed down and escaped in a different direction. She could tell it was a lost cause to save her cub. Sad to see but that’s nature.
Oh shut up.
Thanks for the info!
Your wife wasn't the irritating woman with the annoying ass hyena laugh in the video background now is it? Good lord.
You know, I think the thing I love most about being out in the wilderness is the peace and quiet.
Ages ago I heard this but can't remember where:
"Why do black bears climb trees? Because grizzly bears can't."
I thought it was “...because a pack of wolves can’t” or something like that
@leroi dupetrol Grizzly can climb no problem..
For whatever mother nature had in store,I can NEVER imagine myself laughing watching an animal fearing for it's life. Imagine being surrounded by a gang laughing at you while one or two are slashing you with a knife. Funny, isn't it?
i would have slapped these people in the face if i was there, so annoying, i wouldn't even be friends with them in the first place actually
Thank you for saying that because i knew the cub was going to be eaten ALIVE . nothing cute entertaining about that..The humans definitely sounded like s t u p i d alcoholics . . and probably lineage of jeffrey dahmer

I totally agree. I wouldn't laugh if I was close to the incident. Most people don't understand wildlife. They should be taught about how dangerous most wildlife are.
😂😂 That sounds hilarious. Good one.
The speed of the black bear climbing that tree... unreal.
Great footage Colin .... you showed us this recently on our vacation when you were the Brewster driver transferring us to Jasper via a tour of Lake Louise and the Ice Glacier - you may remember that my son borrowed your sunglasses at the glacier. Thanks for a brilliant tour of the scenery and your great commentary & facts throughout ... with some gags thrown in for good measure.
That grizzly is eating a cub just beyond the tree line.
I can imagine that woman's evil laugh in the Roman Colosseum as the Gladiators were being slaughtered
It looked like a nice size black bear until the grizzly shows up. Awesome footage!
I am glad I read the description. I kept wondering why he didn't scramble out of there when his feet hit the ground. Thanks for sharing!
mother has just lost her cub to the grizzly -that's why she is not just taking off.
do you know this or just assuming?
heard from another photographer who was briefly on the scene, but it was so long ago that I don't even remember who it was.
The Grizzly probably thinks the evil laugh is coming from the Black Bear! :(
Nothing like a life or death situation to bring out laughter at lunch🙄👎🏽
That's vary sad. I think the black bear lost her cub to the grizzly.
The Grizzily was eating the black bear's cubs. They'll sniff out a black bear's den as they commonly do an attack the cubs for food. The park ranger's opinion that the black bear was challenging the Grizzly's food source, such as a dead carcass is idiotic. A black bear would never challenge a Grizzily bear over its food.
Not true. I've witnessed a black male bear trying to get a taste of a moose from a grizzly.
The black bear wasn't challenging the grizzly... The black fella tried to steal some food
Is there another story about this somewhere else? How do you know this?

I doubt that is a particularly small black bear, it's just that the grizzly is much larger.
@Elder One on its hind legs the average make black bear is 7'0 and weighs 660 pounds but this looked smaller so it was probably a female that was 5'7 inches tall.
@Elder One a grizzly is on its hind legs is 8 feet and weighs over a ton so that grizzly would've mauled that black bear.
Elder One Is there any footage of a black bear and grizzly bear fighting in the way you describe? Or fighting at all?
@Elder One Well, actually grizzlies can be more than twice the size of black bears.
Wario & Waluigi productions a 7 foot 660 pound black bear is a ginormous black bear. Most mature males are 6 feet and between 300-400 lbs. a 7 footer can weigh over 600 lbs but they are not common.

Can you imagine being a human, holding on to a tree 20 feet from the ground with a big hungry grizzly bear waiting on you to let go? Talk about scary
Nah the human laughs at its misery
Sounds like a great moment to enjoy a ripe strawberry.
The Grizzly is most likely eating the Black's cub, That would explain why the Black risked it's life.

That would be the only reason the Black isn't a mile away already.

What it could possibly do
@@mostofamojlish8255 you don't know what Grizzlies do to Black Bears?
A Grizzly will kill and eat a black bear if it gets the chance. It is never the other way around
***** Grizzlies can easily climb a tree
No they can't their claws do not retract, Grizzly bears do not climb trees at any stage of their lives.
That is a fact. The grizzlies straight & duller claws impede climbing, but at times they are able.
The lady who was killed by a grizzly in Canmore a few years ago, they found grizzly hair 52' up in the tree.
In all fairness, the report did not say if the bear killed her, or if she fell out of the tree, or the bear caused her to fall. The fact remains, that bear went quite ways up the tree.
***** Full grown Grizzlies have been shown to be able to climb trees, just not as good as black bears.
However, once they're fattened up for winter they won't be able to.
No grizzly can climb a tree, claws arnt built for it. Cubs can climb trees but not adult males nor females. End of the story.
The bear is thinking what is that strange laughter, is it a pack of hyenas...
Don't blame it one bit for heading up the tree.
Grizzly bears can but rarely climb trees thus climbing a tree was the black bears best defense.

@@nathanlong3682 Oh hell no! There was nothing funny going on that day!
@@lawguags1 it almost definitely would have got away. A black bear can chill in that tree as long as it needs. I think it kept coming down, because another comment pointed out the grizzly appeared to be feeding on something, as it was rolling around on it (which they do onto kills) and also kept going back to the same spot. Perhaps it was eating the black bear's cub (which results in a sad ending either way 😔) or was digging through the black bears den which would explain why the black bear kept coming down, to instinctively, yet hopelessly try to draw the grizzly away from whatever it was eating. Bears also don't like to expend energy unnecessarily, so the grizzly would have given up when it realized it can't get to the black bear.

How do you know
It fits very well. The black bear is in serious danger, yet will not leave and keeps looking into the woods. Then she repeatedly tries to approach the grizzly. This is insane behavior as grizzlies kill and eat black bears. It only makes sense if she is hoping to "rescue" her cub.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if the carcass was the black bears cub. It was a very small carcass and that is the only reason I can see for her getting out of the tree and facing the grizzly. If it was normal carcass the black bear would have just ran.
Those laughing need to get chased by a grizzly and see how fear warrants respect
Son demasiado inteligentes los osos como para perseguir hienas con risas demenciales
I think the black bear might have made a kill or was already at the spot scavenging something and the grizzly came later on that's the only reason I can think of the bear coming down and going towards the grizzlies direction before running up again every time. The black bear knows there is no fight vs the grizzly but I guess when you are starving you don't just want to back away from a feast.
Nah. Look at the beginning where the grizzly came out. It’s the black bears cub being eaten
SocalPerspective that is exactly what I was thinking. Well that and I was wishing the obnoxious tourists were quiet. Still, if it was a male black bear it would be odd that he wouldn't just abandon the kill at the sight of the brownie. Unfortunately I have the gut feeling that the bear in the tree is or rather was a sow & the kill is likely her cub or cubs. Bears lead very brutal lives. (Alaska for 14 years, some of my friends were bears)
Sugar Ray Dee , read the update August 29, 2012. Park personnel are generally well informed.
R K The update only says that "it seems most likely" that the black bear was never in any danger and the grizzly "probably" had an animal carcass the black was hoping to get a share of. Of course, we'll never know for certain. I'll say that while I'm no bear expert, the black's behavior didn't strike me as that of an animal whose young is being eaten.
