    I remember my first notebook from 1st grade. It was a glorious, black, lined piece of stationery. It settled perfectly next to my pencil case inside my classy Jansport backpack. If only I knew how useless that notebook was. If only I knew that there were study strategies that took less time and were much more effective. If only I knew most study strategies we were taught in school were a waste of time. In this video, I'll go over the 8 biggest studying mistakes. Study methods I avoid at all costs.

    Highlighting and underlining may not serve much of a purpose when used exclusively. But they do have their uses and purposes when combined with other study methods. For example, I use highlighting like bookmarks on points that I’d like to include in a research paper or to make flash cards for when I’m done reading a particular section. It saves time having to look back through everything you’ve read to find it. It’s a timesaver and a smart referencing tool when used properly. So, do NOT toss out that highlighter!

    i find highlighting as vital to get through heavy meaty papers, with my struggles on focusing. This is the opposite of what been of the highest value to me personally. Some of the tips my therapist recommended for technical reading is to print out when possible the texts, highlight and underline as you read along, and write questions, notes and also summarise each of the majour chapters on the paper.

    Dear Zach,
    thanks for this great advice! I really love all of your videos!
    Now that you have pointed out the new add-on of amboss, would you recommend sticking with Amboss (only), i.e. for reviewing materials, using flash cards, and doing practice questions? Or do you recommend a combination of several different resources?
    I have actually studied medicine in Germany. So I’m used to study with Amboss. Im now about to study for Step 1. But I haven’t decided on the recourses yet. I thought about 1. Zanki/Amboss for flash cards, 2. First Aid or Amboss + Pathoma for reading, and 3. URWORLD or Amboss for questions.
    I would be thankful for any advice!

    Hey Zack, I have a question regarding reading material then proceeding with flash cards. Anki has many great premade decks, however where would you fit in making your own cards since your only reading the material once? Would you recommend making the cards as you read the chapter?

    • @g.k61

    • @ZachHighley
      @ZachHighley  11 місяців тому +5

      I would use premade decks if at all possible, if not, unfortunately it might be best to make the cards but don’t overkill, you should be personally making MAYBE 20-50 cards a day, anything more and it’s too much. I maxed out at 100 new cards a day with premade decks. I would make the cards while reading / watching the video if I had too.

    • @ZachHighley

  • @Tina-fc7ub
    @Tina-fc7ub 11 місяців тому

    I wonder how you do Flashcards without any kind of summarizing?
    I always read my textbook first, then I write down questions and corresponding answers and afterwards I put all my questions from norion to Anki. But formulating questions takes so much time if there are 400 pages in the book.
    Any tips?

    • @ZachHighley
      @ZachHighley  11 місяців тому

      @@khudijaanees4060 So what's the point of villainizing it so much? Highlighting and Underlining is a great way of last-minute revision when you have exam the next morning and you wanna overview stuff one last time. This also takes advantage of the spaced repetition method. The more you see it the better you remember. Especially for engineering folks like me who have to memorize specific bits of info like formulas, procedures of solving a problem etc.
