In any traditional state if an ethnic group grows to a considerable size the traditional council may choose to appoint a 'chief' to represent them. This is a good thing and gives those people a voice. Once he steps outside of Sempe that chief status does not have to be recognised. Asantes resident in Sempe come under the care and protection of the King of that state and he has chosen a chief to represent them. It is not for the Asantehene to appoint him or that would be as if the Asantehene is not recognising the kings and Chiefs of the Sempe state. It is an autonomous state which Asanteman has no jurisdiction over. Let me add that some of this confusion arises because we conflate Chief and King. This has much to do with european interference with our traditional polities. They deliberately started calling our monarchs "paramount chiefs" in order to lower their status against the european monarchs . I add that according to the poorly named Chieftaincy Act 2008 it gives the categories of chiefs a P.58 as: a. Asantehene and Paramount Chiefs b. Divisional Chiefs c. Sub-divisional chiefs d. Adikrofo, and e. Other chiefs recognised by national house of Chiefs At (A.) it makes clear that Paramount and Chiefs and Asantehene are in the same category and in they are in prime position. Within Asanteman and some other states this could be problematic as they may have a head over their paramount chiefs. It is ignorance that will kill us and it is clear that too many of us lack knowledge about our identity and this illustrates the divide and conquer policy is still working !!!
