- Alta Motors invited us to Perris Raceway to introduce their new 2018 Redshift MX and all new Redshift MXR-they produce 42 horsepower and 50 horsepower respectively. David Pingree spun some laps on both and gives his impressions on these impressive electric motocross bikes.
Cool. And thanks for not having frickin' background music like the others.
Quiet, but not silent. I'd love to hear 40 of them off the gate!
The future is quiet bikes..I am on my local planning commission & two tracks were turned down primarily due to noise concerns. I should build a rec. park & require only electric bikes while I open an Alta dealership. The current noise of gas bikes is really detrimental to the industry as we have to be good neighbors and noise causes major problems for people looking for a place to ride in populated areas.

@Testsieger already did back in 2018 bro
Thanks for giving these bikes a serious look and sharing your feedback!
I will forever live in the past with my 2 strokes
Agreed

Like Chocho train the vroom bike will be children's toy
Keith Peterson
Yeah coz it's the safest engine for children and really for adults. Just recently a man died while sleeping with engine and heater on in his car. You can do that with electric car without dying from toxic suffocation.
Even a Chocho train is powered by electric motor but the sound simulates Chocho sounds, soon vroom vroom sounds will be added coz it's like steam engine noise, history
yup rather have my two stroke
Keith Peterson
We are in an enclosed area. The atmosphere is our enclosed area.
Keep up the hard work. You're really coming far in your R&D.
I was conflicted at first, but I feel this is where the sport needs to go to grow. Far too many tracks are shut down due to noise. More tracks means more riders, more money, more sponsors and fans. The technology has come so far--but I'm not ready to buy, yet. I can only imagine how far they will continue to improve over the next few years, much like the early days of the 4-strokes.
Great video and TY for no music!
This video is the best of all of them for the gear alone
Most quiet track day you will ever go to😂
Seriously, this could help with keeping tracks open that are facing issues with noise complaints.
...and you could ride right in the neighborhood without pissing off everyone and getting the 'noise police' (neighborhood watch) called on you. Come to think of it, you could ride it indoors if you had a big place as there's no carbon monoxide to exhaust outside. I'm seeing a lot of Tesla plug-in stations popping up here lately, if that fits or can be adapted to fit the MXR, I could see poppin' a set of 17" SuperMoto wheels/tires/rotors on this the night before and riding it to work, dinner, grocery store, etc.!!! That'd turn some heads. : )'
Rode the MXR yesterday in the woods, what an amazing machine. The instant shock of the torque almost pulled the bike straight out of my hands and I normally ride a CRF450R. Of the 4 modes, mode 2 was more than enough power for flying through technical woods, mud and hills. The suspension was setup perfectly for me so that elevated my experience. The most striking thing after the torque shock is hearing mechanical noises like the chain slapping, the cable tapping the number plate, the suspension movement and most of all the tire losing traction (a violent WHOOSH). I highly recommend doing a Demo Day if you can get to one!
Well, I'm a huge fan. I am sure I'll have one eventually. (As well as a KX500 though :)
That’s a sweet bike, loved it when I first rode one... very cool.
I like how simple it looks and that's about all.
Cool. Please bring these into Australia! I ride an electric road bike with about the same power as these. It is awesome. Would love an Alta for the bush.
Almost has that 2 stroke sound. I love it. I’d get one.
i wander how this bike will do in the lommel sandtrack, cause i always see hardpack tracks.
Back in my Day...
Love it! That's the future right there.
Still no left hand rear brake....
TeKaMOTO wouldn't you prefer a Foot brake though?
no you wont, since there´s no clutch you can modulate brakes way better with the hands :)
macedhx I've raced DH and MX most of my life , I can work the back brake just fine with my foot and hand. Foot brake lever is way stronger and less likely to be damaged too due to its placing 👌🏻
TeKaMOTO I think you could do that yourself as some sort of a mod, I think they are trying to have at least some similarities to gas bikes
OGASI No I wouldn't. It's just like macedhx said. Way easier to modulate the braking power, plus you don't have to have your right foot on the peg when coming into a right hand turn like you do with a foot brake. What's even better is that you can ride on the ball of your foot the whole lap!
I've ridden the electric KTM EXC which had a left hand rear brake and man was that thing easy to ride! Try one for yourself if you ever have the chance. You'll be surprised at how much easier it is to operate.
Tracks will be able to spring up everywhere with no loud noises
Hi RacerX !I would like to see you compare it to 250 4strokes and maybe a 350 woudl be cool to watch.
When I rode the Redshift MX last year, I was extremely impressed. My only gripe is that there is no clutch. I know it doesn't it need it, but I'd want to be able to cut off the power to the rear wheel in the case of whiskey throttle for sure. It felt weird trying to grab for a clutch lever the entire time I was riding, lol. Excited to see how these machines evolve.
WILD IDEA!!! Grab for a clutch lever as you describe, which acts like a semi control switch then release and seat bounce for a high torgue jump for lack of a better description.
sounds like you dont need it tho because of all the torque, clutch will initially reduce power output, you want more power you turn the throttle more, this thing probably reacts instantly.....plus ive been mobbin my klx110 hard lately so im at an advantage being used to no clutch ;-)
I'd just want something to cut off the power for safety reasons.
YZF51 ya I misunderstood
It would be cool if a clutch was an option for those that would want it, but alta probably sees it as more weight, more complication and a possible failure point. The fact these are nearly maintenance free besides the chain and brakes is the biggest plus in my mind. Wish they were still around...
this thing can do a 30 min + 1 lap moto with no problems ?
You know I like it but... I'm gonna stay with my precious 2 strokes
nice bike... I race Hare Scrambles, does any of you knows if there is a model with a battery that can last 90 min for a HS Race?
As much as i love the noise and shit like that. It does piss off ppl and ppl dont need that much to complain. i love the stealth and the eco friendly aspect of this.
has any other OEM offered to buy their tech to put it to use?
They seem so fun and bad ass but I couldn’t imagine going to a Supercross and it be quite
what happens when you crash it? and what happens to the casings? what are they made of etc?
OGASI I've crashed mine a few times and nothing has been an issue so far except for the side plates breaking off quite easily. Luckily new ones are only 20 bux
Leigh Weitzel ah ok that's good news then, I hope they race them soon I'm looking forward to the results . KTM are on the chase so there is going to be some competition soon.
OGASI watch some Atlas MRX video just recently, he crashed after a jump. No damage
Wonder how these stack up against a 450
Actually, since I struggle understanding (I'm italian), I didn't get if they mentioned how long the battery lasts using different maps.
I mean, using the map number 4, the one that allows the bike to get to 50 HP, how long can you use the bike before the need of recharging the battery?
Ok, David Pingree talked about 20 minutes to 30 minutes depending on your speed and then you need 40 to 45 minutes to recharge the battery till the top. I will think about this bike ;)
Damn shame they didn’t make it. Always wanted one when they fine tuned it.
These are sweet
I wonder what the total battery life is and how it would be for 2hr hare scramble racing.
It would make a perfect practice bike for my house
Crash 963 its like 30 minutes
Suprabad1 Yamaha bummer. Still would make a fun practice bike for having close neighbors
Loooove it!!!
there was one bit just for a second when he was in a 5th gear pinned section the motor noise actually snded cool!!!
was a high pitched scream/whine .... get em over the pond to us in the UK !
It's a 1 speed transmission, you don't shift lol.
Thanks Pingree! For the haters out there I believe you just insulted the likes of a few PAST "SX-MX Pro Racers" like Pingree about seeing this bike go up against real race bikes. Just this past year at the "Red Bull Straight Ry-them" didn't we see Josh Hill put down some very real numbers in the event??? Straight up head to head competition, and although it wasn't 15 to 45 minutes plus one or two of SX or MX racing around the track those riders who went and faced off with the Atlas aren't nobodies either. Hater!! Your just going to have to get one and really race it with your "70's Walkman on Playing in your ears god knows what" an race a few real racers to just stop your own noise. Here's the real deal! I see it in a way the hater can have some real fun!! Those old people that you say bag on your riding area for all your noise (it's not the bike but your mouth) with this "New ATLAS" in your truck sitting next to your two strokes or four strokes now you can ride in their backyards and not even wake them up as long as your quite. Just saying.
Congrats to the all the people in the Atlas program and those who WE don't see working to support this fanatically awesome new technology.
Benjamin Rosnagle
Yep

Like how Tesla made car industries came up with their own EV, Alta will be the Tesla for bikes. Soon other bike industries will have their so called Alta "killer" electric bikes
The bikes the Alta piloted by Josh Hill were racing against @ Red Bull Straight Rhythm were also 'factory team' bikes set up just for that event by race team mechanics, that makes it even more impressive as the bike was the MX (not the new MXR!)
And the sound is improving
wow seems like the lack of gas tank and exhaust opens the door for cool storage areas for trail riding.
be interesting to see how Joe Public in the stand reacts to the lack of a engine noise if they had a class for these at the big races
Question is can you put different handlebars on these bikes?
Yes, triple clamps/forks same as the KTM/Husqvarna.
With all the excess riders why doesn't sx and mx just have an ebike class too?
$
I'm ok with the future of this being it's own class. What really will sell this for me if they have a electronic clutch and gears. I just enjoy the technical side of riding a motorcycle of knowing what gears to be in. Idk? I like it as it's own class
Why is it too fast for those old gas bikes?
lithium25693 no it's supposed to be competitive with the gas bikes. I'm just saying like how they're shifter karts and then how it's the Speedway Raceway electric karts they should have it there own class of racing
I don't get why gas and electric need different classes as long as HP are equal. I say let them all compete with each other and let the best bike win
Shaheed350
Ride a steam engine bike, it has all the complications 😁
It's a motor, not an engine.
It would be sweet if alta made the battery like a giant dewalt so a guy could buy a few and just unclip it and pop a fresh one in... no wait time in between motos.
Just build in some loud speakers with 2 stroke or 4 sound and the future will be saved
Good when the guy doin the talking can actually fkn RIDE.
Throw a paddle on it and do a review in glamis
Wow cool a toy bike where is the real one
bob Gray
Toy bike that won races against your "real" gas bikes
Yer cool story where is it now on charge or getting the training wheels put on
Electric bike's will kill motocross no noise no motocross.
actually you will be able to ride more places that you cant now. so many places get shut down due to noise complaints from neighbors. eledtric bikes could revamp so awesome riding in some impossible places
He said motocross and i agree. Yes riding places might open up but i doubt it. They use the noise as an excuse. They will say the destruction of land and keep these out too.
@billy
There are a lot of mountain bike trails that destroy land but are able to remain open due to be completely silent
lithium25693
That's because the ones who want rid of dirt bikes ride mountain bikes.
bill smith
Noise really is irritating. Without noise nobody will complain
Then need to rename the ALTA 122%!
Sucks so bad these guys went out of buisness, I should have bought a new MXR when I had the chance. Wish I could find one used... 450 killers!
*motor
Whoever came up with this electric dirtbike bullshit had no childhood whatsoever.
11K What are you nuts?!
sloergod down from 15k
brand new 450's are 10k.....
My point... At 10K you can get a bike, that can actually be raced.. This is toy, a fun extra to bring to the track. There is no "Electric-450 class" - Therefore 10-11K is ALOT
A bike that costs you another $250 a weekend.. It would be interesting to know wear times on motors and batteries..
welll think about it tho. the gas bikes run about 10k out the door, then you have to pay for fuel do frequent oil changes and air filter changes, tons of internal moving parts to replace or fail and throw you in the dirt.....I think its prime, you can throw a track in your back yard as long as its watered the neighbors can't get you shut down.....
need to get that crap WP AIR FORK, No air fork..... SPRING. LIKE ALLL THE TOP GUYS ARE USING
That thing sounds horrible.
Andrew M
Take out the muffler of your gas bike, it's ugly
Fuck air forks .
Гавно где рев мотора и детонация.
It’s not worth it..$12,000 just too come in last place!...I’m good
Joah Hill got into the semi finals of Red Bull straight rhythm against factory 250 riders. 99% of riders won't be able to ride this bike to its full potential
too bad it weighs 259 lbs
marty one
It had the lowest center of gravity so you'll be riding it like a 2 stroke
Great!, Thanks Peter, I hope to try and get one in the future.
And it sounds like a 2 stroke
Peter Robann Sobrepena lol far from it
Dimebag Abbott
It does, we are not referring to the decibel level
haha not me it doesn't
🤢
