In this video I run though recording a clean and driven guitar comparing the Yamaha THR10 USB direct interface with the sound I get using a Sennheiser e606 microphone.
Remember that recording with a microphone depends a lot on where the microphone is placed. Always listen carefully before placing your microphone (I wouldn't advise having the microphone on the desk with the amp but I only had a desk stand to work with).
    Cheers.

The best thing is to mix both Direct and Miced sound and do the final mixing and put some eq 👌

I just ordered a THR10C online and I was wondering about direct vs. Mic. Mic definitely sounds way better. I'm not even going to mess with direct. Thanks a bunch !!

I think the direct is a great way to quickly put down tracks. And some of the sounds are better direct, honestly.
      Enjoy your new toy.

To be fair, the miced take was in a room and the direct wasn't. I bet if you dial up a similar room for the DI, it may compare better.

so glad I found this..this is an important video and comparison. Surely mic sound will always top the di sound. Its a no brainer but there are some big claims these days about straight in thru the guitar interfaces. I remain well unconvinced. I dont mind buying this THR10 but I would mic it up too I reckon

have you tried using the THR10X as a input to an app like Guitar Rig or Amplitube?

Nice Vid dude! Groovy :-P I was just testing the DI in Audacity (cuz I'm using Linux)...and noticed that the DI totally kills frequencies and reverb. You can't even compensate for the loss in reverb by cranking it up. It just gets removed some how. I was searching for this type of comparison for confirmation after discovering the same results myself. Now I'm going to order an Audio-Technica AT2020usb+ or the new AT2500x-usb. My crappy 4 year old cell phone sounds better than the DI in this amp. Love the amp itself though. I have the THR10ii and ended up liking it so much that I sold all of my tube gear. Before this little amp you would never find me playing on a solid state device :-P

Hi ! Nice vid. I'm also very interested in this amp since it also record bass. But does it take overdrive pedals well in your opinion? Thanks for your help. Cheers

Ety Ramone I’m using a booster pedal and a fuzz with mine. Sounds great. There’s a vid on here somewhere with a dude running a bunch of expensive pedals through this amp.

Great video. I was going to do some demo's for guitar pickups, and comparisons so wanted a good clean sound. I think the C has the best clean sound from what I've researched. I have a samson mtr101a condenser microphone. Could I plug the microphone and guitar into this amp at the same time ? and record from the microphone ? or should I just get an Audio interface ? I'll be reviewing humbuckers without doubt, and heard the C can sometimes sound "plastic like", but I believe that's only on overdrive not even sure what that means.

The mic seems to add a mild touch of reverb.

      Yeah definitely. Room verb.

@@FluffRecordings actually, I've tried the DI vs Mic in a very dry recording room, and in a really wet concrete walled environment. The DI definitely loses reverb for some reason. I've tried to compensate by cranking the reverb and even still it sucks. I also just tested using my Sonic Maximizer, and while you can quite clearly hear the difference with your ears, the DI seems to compress the difference to the point where you can't even tell the Sonic Maximizer is on.

Did you take into consideration the leakage from the guitar itself in the room from the miced recordings.

I prefer the miced clean and the direct overdriven sound.

The clean through the mic does have more depth and dynamics, but yeah, I really like the drive sound. It's perfect for easy easy recording.

Hi, I've got a real issue with clipping/audio dist when I record with the THR10II; have you had this problem? What did you do to solve it? I can't find any way of adjusting the input settings in Cubase!

I think the DI sounds better than the miced THR.
Maybe if you hooked up the THR to a cab, micing that would sound better.
I've been looking at the THRs and was wondering if they'd be any better than the Roland cube 40xl I already have, what do you think?

    • @FluffRecordings
      @FluffRecordings  10 років тому

I've not had any chance to record with the Cube. But I know they sound great!
I can tell you that I'm really happy with the THR10 because it suits my needs perfectly. The fact that it doubles as a bass amp... as soon as the salesman said that, I was sold. But yes, the DI is super simple and just works. To get a get a great sound out of the mic I'd have to spend a bit more time getting the right placement. In hindsight, having the mic on the desk probably contributed to the bassy tone.
There are a few things that annoy me about the THR10 though. There's no speaker/direct out, so it can't operate as a head in the usual sense. Your only output is the headphones or the USB connection. Does the Cube do this? Secondly the drive settings on this model are average. I could play with them in the editing software but I'm used to using pedals from my gigging days and quickly changing sounds so not a huge issue.

Great video. I just moved to Japan from the USA and I'm in between buying this amp or a LINE 6 Pod 2.0. I see the mic is better than DI recording, so do you have or can direct me to a video of recording DI VS. mic using the Pod 2.0? One way or another I need an amp/pedal, I've only got a guitar. If I end up with a normal amp, I've already purchased a USB Blue Snowball microphone.
