I love the new old bridge! Great video! I'm interested in the history of the line and why whey had dual gauge tracks for the first part of the video. It looks like they have been out of service for a very long time and all the switches were placed 'over' the standard gauge track and made them unusable. Thanks for the upload!
Hi Luke, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The mixed gauge section is a mystery, laid only over the new section of track including the new "old bridge". I can only assume there is an aspiration to use standard gauge at some time in the future.
For the double gauge, they were planning to lead the train through the city towards Austria. I am unsure whether this was supposed to be connected to the network in Slovakia, or just to speed up the travel across the city.
Dual gauge was intented for future tram train system (and only junctions in the direction of proposed tram train route are built on standard gauge). However, the plans have been abandoned and further extension of Petrzalka line will only be built with narrow gauge.

Mystery #1 (as already commented on another video): Why do they occasionally have the points/turnouts about 100 metres before the tracks actually diverge? Hopefully someone here will see this comment and explain. Mystery #2: Why do there seem to be double tracks in the early stages of this video? At first I was thinking "dual-gauge" but the outer set of tracks seem to be unused, and they suddenly end without warning. Then I was wondering if they've been added later to catch the wheels of the tram if it derails, so it doesn't "jack-knife" around and hit something else. That might be why they're only in the early sections, if those were recently upgraded but the rest hasn't. But it could just as easily be actual dual-gauge. Perhaps they run an older, wider-gauge tram along that section for tourists sometimes?
I hope someone can answer both questions, I was told the twin gauge section was part of some future plans that are unlikely to happen now due to funding cuts.
Been to Slovakia twice in 2017 and again in 2018 shall be back there this year in 2020. Tercanski Turplica is where I base myself usually. Didn’t ride the trams in Bratislava but will do this trip. Might make a video or three explaining the network, guage, maintenance and storage facilities.
Ah, you noticed. The camera picked up tracks from a local radio station, this would have created copyright issues, so I used the soundtrack from another camera in the passenger compartment, unfortunately it had not recorded the full trip and part of it was used twice. I opted not to replace the soundtrack with royalty free music because that really upsets some viewers.

I don't really know the answer, but I would guess it was to move the switch blades to a place where they were less likely to trap peoples feet or bicycle wheels. Tram switches have always fascinated me, who operates them?

Hello Chuck, I'm glad you enjoyed the trams in Bratislava, this is just the first of many trains and trams I rode on this excellent Slovakia adventure. I look forward to sharing many more videos from this tour as I edit and upload them.
Originally, the intention was to extend the tram system using standard gauge to Petralka and beyond. When I asked people in Bratislava, no one really knew much about the proposed new route, although I was told that it had something to do with EU funding for the new 'Old Bridge'. spectator.sme.sk/c/20053410/funding-for-old-bridge-cleared.html
Bratislava is one of Europe's hidden gems, Slovakia is not usually the first place that comes to mind when thinking about a European holiday, it has a lot to offer, beautiful countryside, historic cities, pretty villages, sensible prices and the people are friendly.

Hi, this is an answer given by someone with more knowledge of the network than I have - Dual gauge was intended for a future tram train operation (only junctions in the direction of proposed tram train route are built to standard gauge). However, the plans have been abandoned and any further extension of the Petrzalka line will be narrow gauge.
I asked the same question and the reply I received was that the tram system was to be extended with the possibility that standard gauge trams might also use the line at some time in the future; hence part of the track is dual gauge.
This turned out to be really memorable tour for all the right reasons. I knew very little about Slovakia before this trip, now I know it is a place I'd love to return to, the railways and trams are really fascinating with plenty of variety old and new.
Hi, you live in beautiful city and you were correct to spot the false sound. Somebody was playing the local radio station and I would have hit copyright issues if I uploaded the sound as recorded. I used the sound recorded with another camera, to try and create an authentic atmosphere.

Watching this trip on these Slovakian trams(or any tram system, anywhere, for that matter) makes me even more aware of what a sick, stupid joke the new Newcastle(NSW, Australia) tramway will be when it begins operation next year. Traveling a mere 2.7 Km from Pacific Street, Newcastle East, down to Stewart Avenue, near the Wickham Interchange. It simply will not match the fantastic tram trips you've recorded, Tim.

I'm not familiar with the Newcastle area, so I looked it up - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle_Light_Rail - Now I know all about it - but I prefer this link - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trams_in_Newcastle,_New_South_Wales We lost all but the Blackpool trams here in the UK, several new systems are now in operation, such as those in Manchester and Sheffield, they are doing OK, who knows the Newcastle system due to open shortly might surprise you. I look forward to you covering the grand opening, "Dawn of a New Era by Neil Forbes"
That was interesting to see. Very nice 'old' bridge over the Danube. No problem getting the camera in that prime position? No barrel distortion either. Which camera did you use?
Hi Terry, this turned out to be an excellent tour. The tram system around Bratislava uses mostly modern trams, although there were a few older ones to add interest. The driver of our tram was really friendly and helpful. I used a GoPro Hero 6 Black Edition camera, a vast improvement on previous models.

I don't really know the answer, but I would guess it was to move the switch blades to a place where they were less likely to trap peoples feet or bicycle wheels. Tram switches have always fascinated me, who operates them?
@@Timsvideochannel1 Tram driver with long metal stick (i dunno exact name of that tool :D ) or they´ve got it automatic inside the vehicle and its for switching tracks
@@NiktoPH Hi, on this tram system the switches are operated by the driver from the cab, although sometimes it is necessary to operate the switches by hand using a special pole when the switch has either failed or has not been fitted with a motor because it is rarely used.

Hello Chuck, I'm glad you enjoyed the trams in Bratislava, this is just the first of many trains and trams I rode on this excellent Slovakia adventure. I look forward to sharing many more videos from this tour as I edit and upload them.
It's surprising what you can see watching these again. There's a convoy of people on Segways 6:50!
They look fun, I'd love to have a go on one.
Beautiful Slovakia Streets 👌🔥🐍💲🙏🎎
Slovakia is a nice country.
Am I the only one having trouble with the sound? it feels like its not even for this video... The tram stands still, yet I hear it move
VERY MUCH enjoyed that.......sounds like a job for me
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The driver has the best view and a comfortable looking seat.
Nice tram line.
I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride.
nice too, thank you cameraman
Thank you I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Very swift. Quick acceleration and stopping.
At main station the bald "soviet heritage" is seen especially well.
It's not a beautiful tram station, but it does the job it was designed to do.
Pedestrian lanes on a rail bridge. You'd never see that in the USA.
It is a little unusual in Europe too.
Pozsony nagyon szép város 💗🤍💚
„Igen”, egyetértek, gyönyörű város 😊.
5:07 those people just have to walk on the green crossing for bikes. I yell at them every thime I see them.
I can't wait for more!
This was an excellent tour, with plenty of driver's eye views. I look forward to sharing more videos from this adventure as I edit and upload them.
Wow what a great place would maybe love to live there one day lol
Bratislava is one of Europe's hidden gems, Slovakia is not usually the first place that comes to mind when thinking about a European holiday, it has a lot to offer, beautiful countryside, historic cities, pretty villages, sensible prices and the people are friendly.

The audio appears to be completely out of sync.
Why are there two gauges?
Hi, this is an answer given by someone with more knowledge of the network than I have - Dual gauge was intended for a future tram train operation (only junctions in the direction of proposed tram train route are built to standard gauge). However, the plans have been abandoned and any further extension of the Petrzalka line will be narrow gauge.
@@Timsvideochannel1 Thank you!
What are the extra rails for?
I asked the same question and the reply I received was that the tram system was to be extended with the possibility that standard gauge trams might also use the line at some time in the future; hence part of the track is dual gauge.
Outside guard rail must have been expensive .
It has become a redundant guard rail, it was originally intended to be a dual gauge route.
Well worth the visit!
This turned out to be really memorable tour for all the right reasons. I knew very little about Slovakia before this trip, now I know it is a place I'd love to return to, the railways and trams are really fascinating with plenty of variety old and new.
Nice video from my city, but the sound was absolutely unreal. This sound was either from another route or just mixed to fit this tram ride. ;)
Hi, you live in beautiful city and you were correct to spot the false sound. Somebody was playing the local radio station and I would have hit copyright issues if I uploaded the sound as recorded. I used the sound recorded with another camera, to try and create an authentic atmosphere.

50 km/h, new tracks lines 60km
60 km/h max on the new sections
Hello, i'm from Bratislava and i noticed that you have audio "disconnected" from video. You can hear door opening when tram is moving and lot of more
You are correct, I have not used the original sound track because someone had a radio playing and I would have had copyright problems had I used the original sound.

I'm not sure, the name sounds familiar, if I can find the tour itinerary with a list of all the participants I'll let you know, although he was not travelling with me on this tram ride.
Sadly that audio not fit on video. But anyhow good video.
You spotted that some of the audio had been repeated, the conversation the camera picked up might have offended some people, I had to choose between music or reusing audio from elsewhere in the video. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

Hello Tim, after Danube bridge seems kind of suburb or railway central station is away from downtown? - Heinz
Hello Heinz, this map shows the proposed extension to the tram system past Jungmannova into the suburbs - www.urbanrail.net/eu/sk/bratislava/bratislava.htm
Thanks for link, Tim. Together with city map I got orientation where your tram ride was located.
After Danube bridge is town section Petrzalka. Jungmannova isn't into the suburbs, Jungmannova is in Petrzalka - town section. Central station is away from downtown, is in advanced center. The size of Bratislava is very large, is 367 km². Website about Bratislava transport imhd.sk/ba/
Very beautiful city! And ride!
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.
Did anyone else see the ghost that appeared at 13:33?
Guess not.
From little tram systems, come extensive networks.
Thanks Tim. Useful to know about the camera. One day I will bite the bullet but probably not until my old Sony Handycam bites the dust :-)
Sony make a good video camera, that's why my main camera has been a Sony for the last 15 years.
Two gauges?
Yes, but only the narrow gauge is used.
Adoro trens.
