@@iansamuel1811 As far as I’m aware, the phrase originated from a friend group that included somebody named John, who, whenever he lost, would always make excuses, particularly phrased like complaints. Over time, they just started saying “no johns” as a substitute for “no excuses,” and the phrase spread through the Melee - and, eventually, the larger Smash - community. One guy was so salty after so many matches that his name has been synonymous with the word “excuse” for about two decades, and that’s still really funny to me.
Even then he still had a very solid performance in this tournament, out performing other top 10 players like Mang0 (okay 11th, lol), aMSa, Wizzrobe, and iBDW.
@@ohianaw Watching him play Strive is the same. The top tier characters are "broken, OP, and dont have to work for anything"... Until he mains them. Then those characters are mid tier and have losing MUs to half the cast. lol
The problem with leffen’s argument is that he wants to make a rule to make it so that he can engage hungrybox more favorably. Hungry box could just as easily argue that Leffen’s shouldn’t be able to Dash dance on the ground forever because it’s disadvantageous for a puff.
or egg stalling, or Samus recovery stalling, or Peach stalling, etc. like Homemade WAffles said, it is an extremely slippery slope that is worse for the game than it benefits.
Leffen is extremely entitled. He acts like he runs the entire scene and can do whatever he wants whenever he wants. He always acts like that. Its super annoying.
What got me the most is when Leffen said "ledge grab limits don't work anymore" - gee Leffen, is it because you lost, so you are looking for the next limit rule so you can come out on top?
@@damana1000 Absolutely. And honestly, it HAS happened before that something small was off about the game version at a tournament. If anyone would notice it by feel, it would be Hungrybox. But, it’s *very* close to johns after you’ve just lost a set, and nobody will remember or care because Leffen did him a huge solid and have him an opportunity to look mature and professional.
That rest did look like it should’ve hit tho. Some Z axis shenanigans. Don’t know what the disk has to do with anything but it’s not like we don’t know melee can be a quirky game sometimes.
leffen is completely insufferable and only knows how to complain. he cant beat marth so he makes the most obscene claim saying fox losses and switches to shiek. hes bad at a 70:30 match up and blames the rule set. leffen is a plauge to melee and the fact the community rides him so hard is pathetic.
He's always causing problems with other guilty gear players. It's honestly frustrating to watch someone be so good and do nothing but bitch and whine when they don't get their way.
Melee isn't this perfect game that so many people want it to be. Adding arbitrary outside-of-the-game rules like "max. air time" that specifically nerf one character seems truly absurd to me, as someone looking in from the outside. I can understand banning game breaking glitches that freeze the game or something. But nerfing a character that isn't the best with some weird rules? Accept that Melee isn't perfect.
@@ggggg77273 A lot of people who focus on playing top tiers grow to feel entitled. Specifically, they feel entitled to a winning matchup. They start to feel distressed and frustrated when other people use their characters' tools in a way that messes with them, because avoiding that situation was the entire reason they chose the character they play. Most top tier mains aren't like that, obviously, eg. I just play Nago in Strive cause he has cool animations, but they do exist.
Talk about a classy ass, sincere, respectful response. made valid points, observations that everyone could agree with (bad matchups/character specific play), and understanding that you aren’t the best all the time. It’s just about getting better as a player, and not “blaming the game/rules/etc”. Seriously Juan, gained a all of my respect in 45 seconds.
leffen is the only one that plays that way against hbox he’s just mad he can’t be the one never approaching against hbox. he camps, doesn’t approach with hopes to punish almost just as much🤣
I mean if you read any comments from Reddit, twitch, UA-cam, Discord, Twitter, etc everyone is shitting on Leffen. It is just that the professional commentators and players took the more mature route and either didn't comment, do what Hbox did, or calmly made pointed rebuttals Leffen had no answer to. It is fine to complain a bit, it is the nature of competitive games/sports, after all, it is what is done after the moment. For example, HBox, Mang0, Armada, iBDW, etc all have their moments in the past, just not as bad as Leffen, but did they sit there and complain for weeks? No, they went back to the grind, trying new things, improving the match-up game, testing new tactics and strategies etc. I'm not saying Leffen didn't do those things (he does make an effort to learn and do better at gameplay), but he is the most vocal and emotional of them.
@@rumfordc hence why I said that it never got as bad as Leffen but there are moments where he trash talks (notably in pre-2013) , gets upset and hates on a character. But the thing is that he is overall more graceful and is much more reserved.
I have never really gotten a concrete answer for this (and I play falco/sheik), but why is the fastfaller playstyle seen as more "valid" than Hbox's? I've heard the "it hurts viewership and viewership is the backbone of melee" thing but I thought the Leffen Hbox set was pretty fun to watch? Idk maybe the fighting game player in me is thinking "whatever works, works" but to me it feels like Leffen is kind of being a baby here.
Because not approaching is lame. You need to do whachu gotta do when somebody is camping you out, and Leffen's narcissistic brain can't comprehend being outplayed so he immediately tries to turn to the viewers to find excuses as to why he lost.
In my experience people coming from Smash think puff is going to be the death of the game, and people coming from street fighter think she’s the most interesting character in the game.
It's basically a speed thing. Melee attracts most of its players for its incredibly paced combos and blazing fast yet still complex neutral. Puff flies in the face of that, and if you don't actually play puff, it doesn't seem like what hbox is doing is all that hard. It's very clear when you watch mango do a sick 0td string that several really good reads and execution checks went into making it happen, but when hbox gets a bair knockdown into rest it doesn't *seem* nearly as skilled. The "hurts viewership" thing is just straight up not true, when hbox is doing well and is a villain to root against melee has better viewership than ever. Most of the puff hate comes from leffen and his overall influence in the community, as well as some from mango when hbox and mango genuinely hated each other. Mango and Hbox are on better terms now, but I don't really think leffen ever really got over hbox. There was a period in like 2017 or 2018 (I don't really remember) when leffen was genuinely pushing to ban puff. Most of the answer to the question is basically just hbox was very good for a very long time, and people didn't like to see someone who didn't speak to what they like about the game at number one.
I loved HBox's response to this because I didn't see anything wrong with the match. Especially the game 3 that caused this. HBox had the lead, the onus was on Leffen to approach.
Leffen reminds me of the Spanish twitch rivals Rust team. They cried about being stomped by the other team, then blatantly broke the rules, cried about getting called out, then forfeit before the tournament finished.
Puff’s air time is ridiculous… against Marth and others, not against Fox. And I haven’t seen Zain speak a word on this. I might even agree that yes, aerial Puff is a little boring sometimes, but this complaint out of the blue that follows a loss (after Leff beat Hbox multiple times now) is just ridiculous. I swear only Leffen can get me to root for Hbox after shit like this.
@@bluewuppo Logistically speaking, the game keeps track of this. You can view your total air time after a game in the stats thing. So you could make some limit of like, "If air time is over X time, then puff loses" or "If air time is greater than X% of gameplay then puff loses". However, gameplay wise speaking, its still a pretty dumb idea. Even if its possible to implement, there is no good reason to actually do so.
@@eragon78 o yea i was talking gameplay wise. like how would you begin to decide a 'fair' amount of air time. is it different for each character? etc etc
@@epicgamer5122 On stream yeah, but he doesn't say it's the reason he lost. Because he knows about the brokenish aspects of the game he works it into his game plan and it's on him to play it out. He knows this.
3 and a half years to be exact, Smash n Smash 5 back in 2019 was the last time he beat Leffen before this tournament But yeah, as much as I'd love for Leffen to take his ball and leave, we know he won't. Only way he's leaving is if he gets forced out...and considering TOs are content to let him spread false rumors, cover up the terms of his ban, and threaten players, yeah I ain't holding my breath
Another thing I could suggest is that the TOs don't really want to bother Leffen too much by banning him or forcing him out because it isn't worth the headache. It is a case that it is significantly less effort to deal with the fallout than his normal behavior. Of course, that behavior shouldn't be encouraged, but I can get why most TOs don't bother, or cannot afford to bother. Many of them are operating at razor-thin margins (Ludwig here said that he is operating at a 200k loss without the primary sponsor) and have to deal with contracts, securing equipment, venue, vendors, staff, security (especially after the one incident a loser in a Madden eSports game went on a shooting spree), disputes (legal (aka Nintendo) and mundane), etc, that is better to just let the guy compete if he wishes than to fight him, knowing that Leffen will fight back since Leffen does have one of the biggest e-Sports orgs behind him (who are possibly legally obligated to defend him if it is in the contract).
Leffen was salty he lost to the one he despises the most, leffen does cry about Xbox all the time with ledge camping and ledge grab limits but nothing worse than losing to the one you know you hate the most. And he let his emotions get the best of him again. Big props to Juan for keeping it mature
Melee community has given hbox so much shit over the years for so little and leffen does shit 10x worse and stays in the community for free. This man child gotta learn his lesson man
This might be a hot take but lowkey if hbox Mained literally any other character, everyone would love him. Crazy how a character can piss you off so much. I hate jiggs but Juan’s cool.
My controller died Someone walked in front of the TV Pizza got delivered Mom needed something My stepsister was stuck You're laggy bro There was a knock at the door
I love what Hbox said in the beginning, because you know for a fact that if leffen took that set he would've simply said ggs, shook his hand, and moved on. But he lost so he has to throw a little bitch fit about the ruleset, the same exact ruleset Zain played on and beat Hbox right after.
I would love to jump on the train of being civil and articulating points clearly, but as a long time Hbox fan, all I can say is LETS FUCKIN GO JUAN!!! Keep up the great work and shake off the haters. We (the fans) are happy for you man
Probably because it would be easier to just deal with him than outright get rid of him. Cause knowing him he'd play the victim if he did get say banned from playing at all and everybody knows it. So it's just easier to deal with him acting like a spoiled and egotistical child then him playing the victim which he's done before
I'm not gonna lie, when I first got into melee, I didn't like hbox, I didn't like his playstyle. But as I've learned more about the game and played more and become a better player, I respect hbox just as much as players like amsa, axe, wizzrobe, etc. Honestly a true professional who understands competition and sportsmanship at a fundamental level. How could you not respect that?
I appreciate hbox'es response and he is total chad. Hbox only plays "lame" as a last resort and he is more aggro than most ppl give him credit for. The thing with the air time limit though that I think ppl are missing is.. I don't think leffen is complaining on his OWN behalf, but more on behalf of I dunno, a big chunk of the cast who literally cannot contest with puff when puff air camps. IBDW made a video on this as well going over this type of thing objectively stating "yeah, the top tiers can deal with this just fine. It's the others that literally cannot interact with puff AT ALL."
I hella respect hungrybox lol, im a returning jigglypuff main, and hes my main inspiration. I watched a video on this guys story, and i thought of my friends making fun of me for playing jigglypuff, and i thougt, fuck it, do what I want. Thank u
Get rid of puffs jumps, get rid of fox's shine, get rid of marths grab range, get rid of shieks forward tilt, get rid of Yoshi's armour, get rid of falco's lasers, get rid of peach, get rid of falcon's taunt, get rid of game and watches 2D model, get rid of pichu's nothing, get rid of doctor Mario's clothes, get rid of DK's horrible AI on his own stage, get rid of Ness's horrible target test, get rid of my comment. Every character has their insane advantage in some aspects we have to learn to just live with it and try to utilize our characters advantage better.
Honestly great mentality coming from the rest main. Jokes aside, respect tho. I actually would love to see a back and forth between Hbox and Leffen that isn't just a fight but like an actual conversation. The way Hbox puts it, it frames Leffen like he is saying he is so much better at fighting that he should win 100% of the time with a better ruleset or something.
I don't enjoy Hbox's playstyle, but honestly I fail to see what was wrong about that set. If Leffen doesn't want to play Melee because he has to deal with 1 puff main that plays in a way he doesn't like (and to be fair Leff has been very consistent about rule changes over the years)... then maybe Leff's time with competitive Melee is done. Make a change because clearly the scene isn't going to ban Hbox's playstyle.

You know it's a problem when even Fox doesn't have the appropriate tools to combat the "strategy" of sitting by the ledge and doing nothing.
@@chrispham6599 still what :v
I'm tired of hearing him whine and cry about everything that doesn't go his way. There's a reason why there are so many Leffen haters. If he quits, we won't be sad, rather, it would be a celebration that he would finally be out of the community.
Nah, I would still be sad if that happens.
I'll be sad about the Melee we will lose, but otherwise, I wouldn't mind losing his toxicity, bad takes, or harassment. Leffen is a vital part of Melee history regardless though, but he needs to mature, his old storyline has passed it is time for a new chapter and I do hope Leffen, if he plans to continue participating, matures with the times.
@@coolyeh1017 he’s literally a cyber bully to so many fighting community figures. Sure he is part of melees history, but that doesent excuse his behavior, and it should not be welcomed in the smash community, it only hurts it.
@@MatthewJones-pz9nx I don't disagree with what you said. I essentially said that if Leffen wants to be in the community, he needs to mature and stop his petulant behavior. Furthermore, he will need to discourage his fans from doing the same bad habits he does.
I just want him to get better about this :/
“When I get a rest I see red” actually love that
Respect and well said to Hbox. Somebody in chat said "Can you really blame Leffen for being egotistical?" and I said, "Yeah because every time he loses he johns" Leffen, you need to grow up. Nobody wants this kind of behavior any more. If it's Hbox or you, I'm choosing Hbox.
glad to see 15 years later, people are still saying "johns"
He's such a crybaby too. When he wins he goes off but when he loses its all excuses and the game's fault. Like grow up or leave cause nobody likes a whiny little bitch
@@iansamuel1811 I still really want to know what John is up to nowadays
@@theillusionist1494 whose it named after?
@@iansamuel1811 As far as I’m aware, the phrase originated from a friend group that included somebody named John, who, whenever he lost, would always make excuses, particularly phrased like complaints. Over time, they just started saying “no johns” as a substitute for “no excuses,” and the phrase spread through the Melee - and, eventually, the larger Smash - community.
One guy was so salty after so many matches that his name has been synonymous with the word “excuse” for about two decades, and that’s still really funny to me.
aggressively high roading leffen here is such a power move, but boy it never works against that guy. hats off
Leffen is mad that people got better huh?

I don’t root for hbox. But I do like the guy, and props to the humility here.
The problem with leffen’s argument is that he wants to make a rule to make it so that he can engage hungrybox more favorably. Hungry box could just as easily argue that Leffen’s shouldn’t be able to Dash dance on the ground forever because it’s disadvantageous for a puff.
Pure class. Nothing but respect for Hbox.
The ending bit of the interview, revealing Hbox didn’t even get first place yet Leffen is malding is the cherry on top.

Bro thought it was Tony Hawk Pro Skater
Next Melee major should have two side events with an air time limit and a ground time limit
if we made a rule against stalling then something is going to have to be done about fox Lazer camping.
or egg stalling, or Samus recovery stalling, or Peach stalling, etc. like Homemade WAffles said, it is an extremely slippery slope that is worse for the game than it benefits.
At least box actually asked if he could, didn’t just come take a mic and start talking all that shit like leff did.
Leffen is extremely entitled. He acts like he runs the entire scene and can do whatever he wants whenever he wants. He always acts like that. Its super annoying.
What got me the most is when Leffen said "ledge grab limits don't work anymore" - gee Leffen, is it because you lost, so you are looking for the next limit rule so you can come out on top?
all I'm gonna say is... Hax was right.
"I'm working on "Top 10 HBox DIs", got one so far..." is killer
Hungrybox has to be so happy Leffen did this because it made everyone forget about the “check the disc” thing
The check the disk thing was bad but not as bad IMO, and Leffen ALWAYS post toxic Johns after his lost. The difference here is that he got the mic
HAHAHA that’s so fucking true. Respect to Hbox for this mature of a response but that’s funny as hell
Check the disc is funny and I think it's gonna be one of those things people say when weird stuff happens in the game.
leffen is completely insufferable and only knows how to complain. he cant beat marth so he makes the most obscene claim saying fox losses and switches to shiek. hes bad at a 70:30 match up and blames the rule set. leffen is a plauge to melee and the fact the community rides him so hard is pathetic.
It's especially weird from Fox mains. It's like they WANT the game to become dull fox mirror matches forever.
@@ggggg77273 basically. “Don’t do anything that makes my TOP TIER character worry.”
Melee is pretty unbalanced. The whole meta is about exploiting glitches and bad programming in general.
@@Yokai_Yuri you have never played the game, and if you have your look on things comes across sad to me
@@ggggg77273 A lot of people who focus on playing top tiers grow to feel entitled.
Leffen is also the type of guy to say yoshi is better than fox after losing to amsa.
Holy shit this is the best response he could have had. Actually articulate and mature. Fucking wild Hbox's development.
Big Leff is always full of Big Johns when he loses. It's a meme in itself now. All the casters made jokes about it too even.
leffen is the only one that plays that way against hbox he’s just mad he can’t be the one never approaching against hbox. he camps, doesn’t approach with hopes to punish almost just as much🤣
@nan5mj Cody is a bit cringe, but Leffen is actually Toxic.
GIGACHAD calls him Slim then leaves
Mad respect to Hbox, he kept his cool even after missing the fistbump.
Leffen "puff shouldn't be allowed to jump"
Literally that's the point of the character.
You should add the Leffen clip and then the Hbox clip after.
i love how not even Melee people are willing to deal with his bullshit anymore
@@coolyeh1017 what "moments" did Armada ever have that were comparable to Leffen's?
@@Ashragi accurate 🤷🏾♂️
@@Ashragi flying footsies ong
I loved HBox's response to this because I didn't see anything wrong with the match. Especially the game 3 that caused this. HBox had the lead, the onus was on Leffen to approach.
Leffen reminds me of the Spanish twitch rivals Rust team. They cried about being stomped by the other team, then blatantly broke the rules, cried about getting called out, then forfeit before the tournament finished.
Leffen's got the Happy Chaos brainrot from GGST now too lol
it reveals alot that hbox talks about the aftermath of his pop-offs like post nut clarity
that's the funniest concept ever holy shit
Puff’s air time is ridiculous… against Marth and others, not against Fox. And I haven’t seen Zain speak a word on this. I might even agree that yes, aerial Puff is a little boring sometimes, but this complaint out of the blue that follows a loss (after Leff beat Hbox multiple times now) is just ridiculous. I swear only Leffen can get me to root for Hbox after shit like this.
also how tf would an airtime limit work????
@@bluewuppo Logistically speaking, the game keeps track of this. You can view your total air time after a game in the stats thing. So you could make some limit of like, "If air time is over X time, then puff loses" or "If air time is greater than X% of gameplay then puff loses".
However, gameplay wise speaking, its still a pretty dumb idea. Even if its possible to implement, there is no good reason to actually do so.
@@eragon78 o yea i was talking gameplay wise. like how would you begin to decide a 'fair' amount of air time. is it different for each character? etc etc

Leffen has and always will be a big baby
3 and a half years to be exact, Smash n Smash 5 back in 2019 was the last time he beat Leffen before this tournament
But yeah, as much as I'd love for Leffen to take his ball and leave, we know he won't. Only way he's leaving is if he gets forced out...and considering TOs are content to let him spread false rumors, cover up the terms of his ban, and threaten players, yeah I ain't holding my breath
Unfortunately.
Many of them are operating at razor-thin margins (Ludwig here said that he is operating at a 200k loss without the primary sponsor) and have to deal with contracts, securing equipment, venue, vendors, staff, security (especially after the one incident a loser in a Madden eSports game went on a shooting spree), disputes (legal (aka Nintendo) and mundane), etc, that is better to just let the guy compete if he wishes than to fight him, knowing that Leffen will fight back since Leffen does have one of the biggest e-Sports orgs behind him (who are possibly legally obligated to defend him if it is in the contract).
at this point LTG has better sportsmanship
Hbox is the trailblazer for the underdogs
Leffen was salty he lost to the one he despises the most, leffen does cry about Xbox all the time with ledge camping and ledge grab limits but nothing worse than losing to the one you know you hate the most. And he let his emotions get the best of him again. Big props to Juan for keeping it mature

Honestly bro why does the community entertain Leffen’s shenanigans.
Probably because it would be easier to just deal with him than outright get rid of him. Cause knowing him he'd play the victim if he did get say banned from playing at all and everybody knows it. So it's just easier to deal with him acting like a spoiled and egotistical child then him playing the victim which he's done before
HBox Should've Just said "No Johns" and walked off
I'm not gonna lie, when I first got into melee, I didn't like hbox, I didn't like his playstyle.

I aspire to have the sportsmanship and temperance HBox has.
Anyone else notice the fist bump at the end? It was so bad but nobody acknowledged it 😂
