There's a book called "Stiff" that talks about some of the interesting things that they have done with cadavers. Very interesting read, highly recommend.
I was half-expecting this episode to talk about that scandal in France, where there is/was a facility that was underfunded, with refrigeration not working, bodies piled up on another, mice and worms eating them. Pretty gruesome.
I actually would donate my body. It’s not painful… you’re already dead! And just for a bit of perspective, a lot of people do address and treat the donated body with respect.
I’d like my brain to be donated to science. I’m on the Autism Spectrum and hopefully it will help with understanding how a female brain on the spectrum works.
Not sure they can use a brain and break down your condition after your gone. While your alive though they can document how you think and feel while having autism and what it inhibits you
That's great to hear! I don't know if you are UK-based or not, but I am donating my brain to the Queen's Brain Bank Trust, so my brain can be studied for understanding of neurological movement disorders (I have Tourette Syndrome).
@@jamesk5541 This comment has questionable rhetoric. This is not how we approach science. Well it's not the same as donating a whole body but I did donate the placenta after giving birth to my daughter. I gave birth in a university hospital and I just asked if it was possible to donate it to science, and they told about a research on stem cells in the umbilical cord. I never found out if my contribution made any difference. But it's still kind of cool to think about it.
What if they used your babies cells in a cloning facility, and your daughters clone is sent to a secret military assassin training program, and by 16 or 17 she escapes to find her true family, but instead of being mad about your donation, she just wants hugs and love and go to school with her identical twin sister and be her ninja bodyguard.
Was it the AMC hospital? I know they are one of the world leading teams in stem cel research. (Given your name I think you are from Holland, if not sorry for the assumption lol)
Could you do a video for what options do we have after we pass . I saw a video once that showed you could be turned into soil which you could then use to plant flowers 🏵
Another place for donated bodies are "body farms." They study decomposing bodies in different situations. I hear, for the more macabre among you, they even give tours.
What happens if you spend too much time in space? I've read about astronauts who developed severe health complications when they returned to earth after months in space
I was already not okay with the idea of donating myself to science, but knowing I've gotta get stuck and tested on while still alive puts the final nail in that particular coffin. Pun intended.
Yes, there has been recent research into growing organoid brains (they are a few millimeters across) from human cells that are modified, by removing the human genome and replacing it with a Neanderthal genome. They grow very differently in structure to unmodified human brain organoids. The is talk of the next step being to hook these organoid brains to small robots that feed them sensory information and allow the organoid brains to react by controlling the robots and they want to see how much of an effect having such a different structure has on the organoid brains responses. They hope the gain some understanding on how human and Neanderthals minds were different on a fundamental level and gain more insight into how the geometry of a brain effects how it functions in general.
My mum has a story about this. She once was doing something on a dead body with a friend and they took the arms of the dead man and started fighting each other with them
That's disgusting, why would anyone get pleasure from using a dead persons body parts for that. That's definitely not what the donor wanted their body to be used for.

Off topic: I've always wondered about pet cremation. I had my dog cremated and wondered what ashes did I get. It's not farfetched to think that pet crematoriums don't cremate just one pet.
I cant speak for any pet crematoriums but years ago i worked at an aminal shelter who also did cremations. I never preformed the cremations but they did make me empty the incinerator once (refused to do it again). They either cremated a single animal at a time or multiples when we were backed up. The incinerator emptied all the ashes / bone fragments into a 55 gal metal drum. The staff would scoop some ashes from the drum if you requested them, otherwise the ashes would just sit in the drum until full then they made us empty it in the dumpster. It was all pretty sad and after my other dog passed away i opted for a burial at a pet cemetary. Im sure there are many respectable pet crematoriums out there but i would always do thorough research on the place first.

Your information about the process of body donation is a bit incorrect. Usually you are sent to a funeral home first and then the funeral home takes care of embalming or any processing needed and then the university or agency picks you up from there. I’ve had several relatives donated to science and some problems because there’s some confusion with the funeral home so that’s how it works.
