  • On Monday, September 11, 2023, the Pepperdine community gathered at Alumni Park on the Malibu campus for a remembrance ceremony honoring the lives lost during the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon 22 years ago. With the Pacific Ocean behind them, nearly 3,000 flags served as the ceremony’s backdrop, each representing a life lost on that day. Actor and producer Chris Pratt gave the event’s keynote address to an audience of more than 1,000 Pepperdine
    students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
In his speech, Pratt recognized that while he is not a member of the armed forces or a first responder, he is an American citizen who was forever changed by the events of 9/11 and who wants to make a positive difference in any way he can.
“I am a deeply patriotic American,” Pratt said. “I’m a concerned citizen and I’m someone who believes that we all owe it to those who lost their lives on that fateful day to pull together to unite our incredible country and to help it fulfill its great promise.” Pratt was in New Zealand filming a movie on September 11, 2001, and like many that day, felt helpless as he watched the horrors taking place back home. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” he continued. “I’d never seen anything like that in my life. I stepped out and I fell to my knees in the snow and I cried. I felt the tectonic plates of the earth shifting beneath my feet. I knew in that moment that the world I lived in was going to be totally different moving forward.”
Pratt then shared his experience training with Navy SEALs for a film role. “I met a handful of extraordinary men,” he said. “Men who dedicated their lives to service in the years following 9/11, men who had a purpose larger than themselves. And these are men who talked to me about being called to service, who talked to me about their love of their country in a way that moved me deeply and humbled me greatly.” Inspired by their acts of bravery and commitment to serving their country, Pratt felt called to use his platform as a celebrity to amplify the message that the heroes and the victims of 9/11 should never be forgotten. “Why me?” he asked. “Why not me? Truth is, we’re going to need all of us to bring our country together for the road ahead.”

Chris Pratt is one of the few likable celebrities who still makes enjoyable fun blockbuster movies, while not being afraid to stand by his Christian beliefs and patriotism.

As a patriot, retired vet, and avid movie goer, it's hard to support movies with actors that aren't patriotic or seem to dislike America. I've always liked Chris Pratt, found him entertaining. Honestly after seeing this, I'll support any movie he's in. Actors like him are few and far between. He's got real courage and honest and good pro American values, that's very respectful in my mind.

Wow good for chris pratt for giving a very respectful speech for the victims who were taken away from their loved one's too soon but chris brother was in the service my brother was also in the military when 9/11 happened he was stationed at warner robins air force base in Georgia and when the attacks happened he volunteered to go to war before he was asked and he was one of the first ones to go over seas to set up equipment for the ground troops and the pilots who flew missions never forget that day or the victims as long as im alive hopefully all those souls are at peace

10 moths later and your message is needed more than I realized the first time I watched this. The division has gotten worse, an assassination attempt, and the prosecution of a political candidate based in emotion. Chis your message here gave me chills as a Marine and OEF Veteran. I was 13 on 9/11. I remember 9/12, freedom fries and American Flags were EVERYWHERE! We were AMERICANS. Say what they will about millennials but we are the generation of volunteers to TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE ENEMY! We are true Patriots and we have to stand up and make our voices heard! We are Americas sons and daughters that will not take this rhetoric anymore from either side. We need to unite as one. One nation, under God, INDIVISIBLE. LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL!

My mom worked there and was stuck in traffic and late to work thankfully . She worked on the 101st floor for an insurance company so she wouldn’t have made it out . I was 8 but remember everything .

My uncle and dad worked on the 99th floor for aon. Luckily both of them were out of town that day for business travels. However, unfortunately the entire office couldn't be out. They lost a lot of friends and coworkers but one of them (Rudy Maggie) was late to work because he forgot his wallet... frustrated at the time for sure... however, as we know now? This was a blessing in disguise. Had he been on time? He would have been trapped on the 99th and killed.

Beautiful speech. None of us who were alive and cognizant that day and in those following years will forget how united we were. It saddens me to see the current state of America and all the young people burning flags and degrading this countries history. It’s a failure of education.

When God calls us, there’s more than one way to serve. For some, it is on the front lines, fighting in the military, for others it’s as a first responder, answering the call when trouble arises at home, and others it’s on a stage, reminding people to hold their heads up high, or even simply just to make them smile, to remind others that the sun will still shine tomorrow. He may not have answered the call as you think he should’ve, but maybe taking the path he did, was answering His call instead? That’s what it means to have faith.
