The Old English Sheepdog, though often called The Bobtail, has a long tail. At least most do. Check them out at your next dogshow. I had believed they were born with bobtail and was very surprised.

I had a Rottie that was born with no tail at all. I never heard of this happening, before, or since. The interesting thing is that she didn't even wiggle. Nothing at the back. You had to look into her eyes to see how she was feeling.
Some of the Bulldog breeds have short "corkscrew" tails. Though I would need to do some research to determine what percentage of the breeds have this feature. Check the Bulldog, and the Olde English Bulldogge.
I am not a fan of long tails in big dogs, especially when carried horizontally. I have a Cane Corso with a natural tail. She can be in one room behaving, and her tail is in another room just decimating it. Her name is Galena, her tail's name is THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
I appreciate that you researched the genetics, behind the phenomenon, and am surprised by the amount of variation.
    Thanks.
