Now that I’m older and in the Air Force, I can’t believe how insane it is that Grimm was an A1C when he pulled this off.
lmao I've been in the USAF 12 years and completely agree. His supervisor got a call and you know he knew his career was over. LOL

Funnily enough, they did actually step-promoted him to Lieutenant. Must've done some volunteering at the base USO.

How I love this game, specially after they used the OST on the Olympics

Just a fun fact:
when Pops takes off, an allied C-1 trader with osean markings will be moving around, the fact that its not marked with iff makes it quite hard to find him, but its not impossible
C-1 Trader doesn't have an iff because it's civil propeller
I always liked the music in this mission, it does help feel a bit more intensity!
Ah, those F-16Cs with their ability to launch missiles backwards, such a random thing too.
And Ford comes in aaaaand he's down, Chopper's career is saved!

i creamed my fuckin memes when they played this. I flipped so hard my family though something was wrong lol
Ace combat always has one of these missions where you take off during combat.
But this mission is the best of those. The opening where you see the pilots that were sent out ahead of you getting shot down, planes falling out of the sky into the tarmac, enemies strafing the runway with machine gun fire. It’s all so hectic, and perfect.
One of my favorite missions.
Man I love seeing Grimm's moment here. So much sweeter to see him grow into a seasoned ace throughout the game!
I find it funny how Grimm manages to casually steal an F-5 moments after it's done being worked on. That thing has no APU, it literally *needs* the ground crew to spool its engines up for it, so how could he surprise them?
Perhaps the crew was waiting for a pilot, but "not seeing any" and in desperation, they let him up?
Take your pick of lack of realism, technical or doctrinal. I'll go with the latter because it fits right in Ace Combat.
I always assumed the mechanics were running tests on the engine and spooling it up when the attack happened. As the mechanics fled Grimm got in and started doing the preflight checks.
Barlett last command was to prep up the plane after the missile hit his F4
But he didn't come back so it was all prepared and got left the way it is

Base Crew: "Lets party hell yeah!"
They hate him for his reckless action instead of looking for the problem around him. If he just didn't go to Sand Island during the air raid, he might get some respect from the base itself.

I dunno, I always liked the raid here much more than in Talon of Ruin. Hresvelgr's felt superfluous to me while this one captured the trial by fire Wardog was going through.
Too bad the mission itself is a cakewalk though.
I voted Grimm cuz PJ didn't had as much screen time as Archer did so I feel like I know Archer better :-)

Man i miss playing this game, this was my favorite mission as a kid. I played it so much the dialogue is burned into my memory anytime i listen to the bgm. Definitely ny favorite game in the series.

It was hard for me to feel the desperation of being under attack in this mission as well. Especially with Chopper acting as though it were just a minor annoyance before hand
Yeah, I think Zero's way was simpler and more effective. You're in a briefing when you are told to scramble all jets without any idea what is happening.

TBF, Archer is a pretty damn cool callsign.
He's nervous - probably fearful - yet he takes matters in to his own hands and does what's needed anyway. I'd say that's pretty badass.

the music is GREAT
it was due to TugaAvenger's video was able to play this childhood game that got me interested in military aircraft. I downloaded PCSX2 on my shitty as laptop and downloaded AC5 and ACZ. I've replayed both games at least 3 times now. As i was playing the games, i thought to myself....
Ah back to this old banger, where did the art in gaming go?
It got replaced with half baked game play that needs dlc and micro transactions to complete the game

I do like the intro. Not as effective, as, say, SUDDENLY XB-0 BOMBING THE SHIT OUT OF YOUR BASE HOLY FUCK, but it's quaint for the time.
And we're introduced to Mindripper, also known as *_WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH HIS PAINT SCHEME!?_* I guess him being called Mindripper is apt! I feel like my mind's being ripped up just looking at his plane. Also strange that this the only case where it's not the "last plane" in the "plane family" lineup to get the SP color. (F-4X gets standard YK colors)
TBH it's not so much waaiting as the fact that there's like, at most, 4-5 planes active at any one time.

Actually, not sure, dunno if I was using widescreen hacks in 2017. But now, I actually use both. Ends up with a slightly higher FoV than possible on PS2.

Why do you always choose always bombs? In air-to-air combat it makes no sense.
If I recall correctly, since this is a scramble mission it loads you up with a pre-set loadout on the story mode. Going back to replay it you can pick whatever loadout you like.
For the first set of missions, up until Rendezvous, you're stuck with the F-5E for a fresh playthrough, and AC5 doesn't have selectable SP weapons, so you're stuck with useless bombs.
