    • @talesfromthetoiletseat8295
      @talesfromthetoiletseat8295 4 роки тому +23

      I never really understood that statement. If you can do guitar level shit on a bass (in this case a six string) you are better than the guitar player. Especially if you can make it work in the guidelines a bassist “should” do (time keeping, working with the harmony and rhythm all in a way that makes the whole band sound good ect)
      The entire setup on bass is physically larger larger strings, necks wider gaps and all that. Make the bass a fretless then it is even harder.
      In that case better! Lol

    • @nochthitus9397
      @nochthitus9397 4 роки тому +9

      @@talesfromthetoiletseat8295 completely agree, I've never understood it either even though I hear it a lot. Because of the increased scale it's a completely different animal that comes with its own challenges to overcome and because of the audible spectrum it actually plays a massive part in the overall EQ of music, have you listened to songs that have had the bass frequencies removed or have been recorded without bass altogether? They sound terrible! Really Bright and harsh...
      My thought is that It's probably just something insecure guitarists like to say to feel better about themselves

    • @talesfromthetoiletseat8295
      @talesfromthetoiletseat8295 4 роки тому +1

      Nochthitus that would’ve my guess about insecurity lol
      The lack of bass makes stuff sounds so weak and thin. To me if the bass in this type of music was roots fifths in eights only it would sound weird and sound like the bassist to not able to keep up even if he was in time. To me at least. though sometimes that might be needed

    • @lashedandscorned
      @lashedandscorned 4 роки тому +4

      i just see the guitarist and bassist as two different band members who want to create good music and get better at their respective instruments, just like the drummer

    @eyeplaymetal He joined the band after listening to their demo... This is Dominic "Forest" Lapointe, once bassist of Quo Vadis, Augury and Negativa... The trio were looking for a bassman for months when this guy showed up, he completed the songs of the demo and they went forward to making The Aura (According to Simon, lead guitarist and singer, Forest pushed the guys really hard to deliver good performance, being the most experience artist in the band.. but it resulted in an amazing masterpiece)

    No doubt he is a master and can play anything, but doesn't he have a rather unconventional picking hand style?

    • @fredmachine
      @fredmachine 10 років тому +21

      Yeah, it does look kinda odd, doesn't it? A bit like lute-players. But it works, so it can't be too bad ;)
      Like Marty Friedman. His picking looks absolutely nuts, but somehow he manages to kick arse.

    • @demisaurus2165
      @demisaurus2165 10 років тому +7

      I think it only looks strange because he's using his thumb to constantly silence the other strings so it doesn't get all mucky... plus he uses 3 fingers to hit the strings (sometimes that pinky even gets in there)

    • @demisaurus2165
      @demisaurus2165 10 років тому +5

      honestly, the more I watch it, the more "by the books" his thumb placement looks to me. Something I was always taught to do but I'm not as gentle with my instrument as this guy lol... I like to beat on the strings

    • @MattPictures13
      @MattPictures13 10 років тому +7

      I have this same kind of style. The way I explain it is that I'm using my thumb to silence strings so that I don't accidentally play an open note I don't want to. It's probably a little unconventional and a lot harder on myself than I need it to be, but especially for stuff like this where precision is key, it makes my assurance a little higher. It's probably not the greatest habit I've created for myself, but honestly I think this style is a little more about comfort and assurance than anything. I personally love playing like this and to see a true professional play like it is EXTREMELY reassuring. cheers!

      I have a Rogue. But it's a 4 string. We used to stock and handle them all the time when I worked at Musician's Friend in KC. I knew that it was a quality instrument before I ended up getting mine used. And I got it for $70! Score! New, last I checked, they run from somewhere around $150 to $350.
