You guys nailed this! There's a lesser-known ditty by the Kinks called Shangri-La. It's about class society in Britain. Give it a listen. Thanks for all that you do for Kinks fans and others.
So many Kinks songs for you to react to like Celluloid Heroes, Rock N' Roll Fantasy, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Stop Your Sobbing, Destroyer, (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman, Low Budget, Don't Forget to Dance, etc.
Around the Dial, Waterloo Sunset, Tell me now so I know. Maybe the best concert I ever saw. Front row center stage. Ray Davies reached down and shook my hand and threw me a guitar pick.
The Kinks are one of those typically English bands that managed to treat us with music that was Not like everything else. Their hits are including "Dead End Street" "Sunny Afternoon" "Tired of Waiting" "All Day and All of The Night" please keep on with your reactions & keep the great music alive.
The Kinks were such an amazing band, other tracks to check out by them: "A Well Respected Man", "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion", "Dead End Street", "Tired of Waiting", "All Day and All of The Night", "Destroyer", "Sunny Afternoon", "Days", "David Watts", "Celluloid Heroes", "Till The End of The Day", "Death of a Clown", There are plenty of others but these are good ones to continue with.
You all are a blessing! I love your ending with a blessing to all. J and Amber you always make me smile! Loce you both and i tell people all the time that i think you are wonderful! On my heart to let you know what a testimony you give!!!!
This song was originally sung by Dave. It became an anthem for the fans so Ray started singing it. Check out the studio version on The Great Lost Kinks Album.
This was the B side to Sunny Afternoon, but became a hit on its own and is now recognized as one of the most influential of all the Kinks songs, as much of their stuff, way ahead of its time ✌️
I love your channel! So much fun seeing your reactions to songs I grew up with. The Kinks were one of my favorite bands, and Ray Davies is a great songwriter. Thanks
December 14, 1984, was the day I went to my 1st concert ever when I was 14 years old. It was The Kinks with Tommy Shaw of Styx opening at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I got tickets for a Christmas gift from my mom. I always play The Kinks at this time of the year. RIP Mom, Lori, Michele, and the Spectrum. Happy Holidays to all!🎄🎅🏼
The Kinks were my first solo concert ever, too. October 26th, 1980, at the Nassau Coliseum. (They played the Spectrum the next night.) I was 17 and technically my first show was when, on a summer visit to look at colleges, Dad took me to Tanglewood, thinking there would be a classical show going on, and instead we ran into a Bonnie Raitt show with a bunch of kids sitting on blankets and smoking pot, but Dad (RIP) stayed mellow. (Of course, that could have been from all the pot in the air.) But the Kinks were the first show I decided to check out on my own.
I think the importance of this band in rock music, nowadays, is being very much overlooked.....they had almost everything in their music...punk, Beatles-ish melodies, David Bowie-ish issues, rock-blues, hard rock (during the '80s). GREAT band !!! Happy Christmas everybody !
And then part of the concert for the rock n roll hof in 1995 where they saluted the british invasion at the greatest single rock n roll show in history.
Best fuckin rock band ever. I have listened to The Kinks for 50 years and ever time I play their vinyl I am never disappointed. The Who are my favorite band but The Kinks are the best. For people my age that are in to music The Kinks have easy 30 hit tunes. Trendsetters man and they play every style.
Wow! I never heard this song by The Kinks before! I was born in 1973, so I've heard tons of the "oldies" from my Mom and Dad, but this is new for me! I love it! Thanks for the reaction. I really needed to smile today. Your mission has been accomplished!
I was born in 70. The worst was in 1999, I worked at a music store much like the store in Empire Records (movie). This kid came up to me and asked if there was an oldies section. I asked for a specific band and he said...Journey!!! OUCH I felt a wrinkle seep into my forehead at that very moment lol. Then he also bought the Kinks....all for his mom. I was only 29 but THAT made me feel old.🤟🍻
Love the Kinks. Lighter side of the Kinks, - Low Budget., Classic Kinks, - Celluloid Heroes and more rock - ( Wish I Could Fly Like ) Superman and Destroyer
Dave is such an amazing and influential guitarist. So much heart & soul. He plays what the song needs, not just flash & fireworks The Kinks - Tired Of Waiting The Kinks - (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman The Kinks - Low Budget The Kinks - Destroyer The Kinks - Living On A Thin Line
I was born in 63. My sister was 9 years older than I was. she introduced me to The Kinks The Beatles the stones the doors I grew up with all the original rockers. The Kinks were always my favorite. I know all this stuff. this is nothing new to me. They made great music for four decades. A song that no one seems to remember is their last release in 1993. How do I get close to you great tune to close their era. Check that one out everyone knows all the other ones. Just a thought from an old rocker who remembers the bands till their end.
Lol, your sister was a better big sis than I was! I was the eldest and my parents were NO use (although we did have "Dark Side of the Moon" because every house in America had *that* ), so when I started trying to expand beyond the AM radio stuff I had to endure while Mom was driving me around (Dad only wanted to hear the news and classical music, so he refused to pay for an FM in the car), I just randomly started buying Jefferson Airplane/Starship albums as presents for my brother…because his name is Jeffrey. Seemed as good a place to start as any other, lol.
I like the shadenfreude of you wearing the New Orleans T-shirt because Ray Davies used to live in New Orleans, and that is where Ray chased after a thief who had stolen his then girlfriend's purse and got shot in the leg. I mean he is not like everybody else. Even in his late age, he was fearless like that. I am also so glad you chose the live To the Bone version which was used in the Sopranos. It is the best interpretation of this song! It is one of my all time favorite songs! Absolutely smashing. And your right about the guitar work as well, Dave Davies, Ray's brother, is one of the great rock guitarists! The Kinks were huge when they came out with You Really Got Me and got a chance to tour America. Unfortunately, their tour manager left them, I believe to manage Sonny and Cher, leaving Ray (18) and Dave (16) to fend for themselves in a foreign country. Can you imagine trying to manage things themselves at that age in a country they had never been in? I mean as the song suggests, they were fiercely independent, but it is a tall task. We don't know what exactly happened. We don't know if it had to do with teamsters taking their band name the Kinks the wrong way. Whether there was a fight or not? But, we do know the result was the teamsters refused to work for the Kinks and it effectively resulted in them being unable to tour the US at the height of their career, with all the financial implications of such a situation. The US was where the money was at. But, it created a very special creativity and it created a cult following of fans who just love the band. Play more Kinks! There are plenty of people out there that would love to hear young people get a chance to enjoy them! If you want an amusing 60s song, you should try Dedicated Follower of Fashion.
The Kinks are so frickin cool-you know these guys were a big influence on Led Zeppelin and AC/DC and other bands of the era. Speaking of AC/DC, you should totally do “Ride On.”
I think this live version is way better - especially with the intro where ray says "Everyone expects us to do great things - and we mess them all up" and the guy in the audience yells "Oh no you don't!"
This song is the blueprint song for most of the most influential British Indie bands in the early 90s, they are all present in what this one song does, The Stone Roses, Pulp, Blur, The Charlatans, Primal Scream and more.
This is a great live version many years after the original version, which was the flipside of Sunny Afternoon. That song became a monster hit, but DJ's failed to play the other side. Always been one of my favorites by The Kinks!!!
Once again the two of you have nailed it, The Kinks are special and truly exemplify the 60's revolt against the establishment, I encourage more Kinks. Please consider some nuggets from their "Schoolboys In Disgrace" album, cuts like "Education" "The First Time We Fall In Love," "The Hard Way" or "Jack The Idiot Dunce." Happy Holidays and I look forward to more of that thing you're doing for all of us who love you in the New Year, cheers!
It's the unofficial anthem for KinKs-fans, and ofcourse we see the irony of EVERYBODY singing in the audience along that we are not like everybody else, but it is true for the band itself. Thanks for a great reaction, and maybe react once on Celluloid Heroes (the live version) from them. It's also an absolute gem.
This is a newer version with vocals by Ray, the original was released in 1966 as the B side to "Sunny Afternoon" and was sung by Dave. It was originally offered to The Animals, but they passed on it. It was also recorded by The Chocolate Watch Band in 1968.
I did NOT know this song!! So happy you played it!! The Kinks are awesome, rock royalty at the top level. To me they are the original punk attitude garage rock band. And so many great songs, others have listed them. If you havent reacted to it yet id go with Sunny Afternoon! And btw, just got back at 4am today from New Orleans, Amber 😊 SUCH AN AMAZING MUSIC CITY!!!!
Following the Kinks since the mid sixties....this is the best/longest version i've heard so far. Great intro, is a verrry cool song...damn. With the Sopranos connection this ones gonna fly (views and likes). Good reaction. Good taste....you're now forgiven for your Rock Lobster reaction J.
It's not too often that a live version of a song is way better than the recorded LP/CD version. Another Kinks song that kicks ass is "Living On A Thin Line" which was used in The Sopranos TV show.
I think they HAVE done "All Day And All Of The Night", but it got taken down. I remember waiting until they hit that one and "Lola" before I started recommending "Destroyer". Then again, I could be older than I used to be, lol.
Never known you guys to be so quiet and pause so little during a reaction. I was right there with you. Perfect reaction to some great music - your heads bobbing and swaying told the whole story.
This is a good version, it sounds like a live version, maybe from the 70s. The studio version is is about the same speed, but softer and with no distortion on the guitar.
Next Song 'Celluloid Heroes'. Love your talk about the Kinks. You have remember we had to wait for weeks, even months, in anticipation for every new single they released. You guys have the songs instantly at your fingetips. Lucky you.
I kind of tuned out on The Kinks after 'Lola' caused me & friends eyes to roll back in their sockets. But This is Great! Managed to find another classic 'jewel', You Guys! Love It! Thanks! :)
J'ai 74 ans et je suis toujours fan des Kinks,j'aime le son et le style à la fois soft et hard et leur voix nonchalante et rugueuse,c'est toujours un plaisir de les écouter merci.
Correct & respectable live version from the 1996' US double CD release of 'To The Bone'. Maybe you should try with the original 1966 studio take. Pure Garage/ProtoPunk seminal anthem. 💣🔥
Was that when Ray and Chrissie were dating? (Can't believe she dumped him for Jim Kerr of Simple Minds. Yes, closer in age, but seriously trading down, musically.)
This is a rerecorded version of the Sixties original from the early Nineties -- on To The Bone, what turned out to be the band's last album. It's a career retrospective of studio and live recordings spanning the the previous three decades. I saw them live round this time and their sound was seriously heavy - Dave Davies guitar was just about the single loudest thing I've ever heard.
This is not the original KINKS song from 1966 "I'm Not Live Everybody Else"!!! This is a slow live version that was recorded in the 1990s and bears little resemblance to the original song. Not sure why this version was reviewed as opposed to the original single.
If you like the Kinks, you really should try "Give the People What They Want", since the title is one of your catch phrases. That said, "Celluloid Heroes" is a great song by them that you should do next.
Total surprise! The original I think was mono, very thin production and I was expecting to be almost apologetic. This was great with that guitar heavy intro and backing. Thanks and a very happy Christmas!
Wow, thanks a lot. This is a huge discover, didn't know this new version. Loved the 1966 original. Please ! check out "Tears of a clown" with Dave singing lead.
A song by The Kinks that I didn't know - and so fantastic!? Wow thanks! As I just read it was the B-side of Sunny Afternoon and was written for The Animals. Please do Celuloid Heroes - it will bring a tear or two to your eyes even though you probably don't even know half of the names as many are not that famous anymore as at that time.
This is a live version recorded at Konk Studios in front of a small audience on the 1996 re-issue of "To the Bone". Unfortunately the link you chose edited out Ray's typical witty intro to the song. The original studio version was the B-side to their "Sunny Afternoon" single. What makes the original quite unique is that Dave Davies sang lead - typically Dave sang lead on songs that he wrote.
Really wish you would've done the original album version from the 1960s versus this much later live version. The album version conveys the feeling of the song better with clearer to comprehend lyrics. However, the best use of this song was at the end of one of the Sopranos episode. An episode where everyone seemingly is happy and has their sh*t together...except Tony who still feels miserable. So he does stuff to make others angry...and finally he is happy. And then this song plays.
Their two most popular songs were “ all day and all of the night” and “ you really got me” maybe you played them already. They really rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this song ! .. I first knew of it through the fabulous cover version by Jimmy And The Boys, an alternative rock band from my country of Australia .. Great to know that the Kinks did the original, as I love their music, and this cool and edgy number is now one of my faves by them !
Nice job, good insights. The Kinks are special, the best of the British Invasion bands IMO. And by far the most creative and entertaining with their (nearly) yearly album releases throughout the '70s. ('80s albums, well, each had a few good songs on them.) You want a gorgeous Kinks song that received no notice in the States, check out "This Time Tomorrow" from the Lola vs. Powerman and the Moneygoround album.
“Living on a thin line” is one of the coolest songs you’ll ever here. Immensely underrated.
I love that song!!! I’d never heard it until Sopranos but loved it instantly on my playlist!!
Love The Kinks. They stood out in a sea of groups at that time. Something special about them.
Live version is a masterpiece, but Dave's guitar takes it to another level. Almost ethereal.
You guys nailed this! There's a lesser-known ditty by the Kinks called Shangri-La. It's about class society in Britain. Give it a listen. Thanks for all that you do for Kinks fans and others.
"Shangri-La" ... oh, excellent recommendation. Seconded!
The Godfathers of Punk Rock!

Great list. Add Apeman.

Yeah, Waterloo Sunset, for sure, and someone said Lola, right? Stop Your Sobbing another classic, later covered by the Pretenders.
Holly Golighly did a good cover of "Tell me now so I know," which is featured in the Jim Jarmusch-Bill Murray film Broken Flowers.

If Jay and Amber wanted to spin Death of a Clown, I would be okay with it. That's a really good Dave Davies feature.
This is a great newer version by Ray. The original version was sung by brother Dave. One of my favorites. The Kinks had great "B" sides.

For a song that came out in 1966, it sounds incredibly modern. This could be a new release. It's also nice to hear Dave Davies.
Dave Davies is one of the most important guitarists of the age of rock music. He deserves a lot more recognition than he gets

Yes - the B side to “Sunny Afternoon” (1966). Dave takes lead vocals on that version. It’s a classic.
And this version changes one of what I consider one of the more important line. "I won't say I feel fine line everybody else"

this version (live) is 10 times better than the studio version . instant playlist
Never heard this, but I will always give any Kinks song a listen. They were great and very infuencial to future artists.
Have you guys done "All Day and All of the Night" yet? That's a good one by the Kinks
Correct & respectable live version from the 1996' US double CD release of 'To The Bone'.
Maybe you should try with the original 1966 studio take. Pure Garage/ProtoPunk seminal anthem. 💣🔥
Ray up front while brother Dave with the guitar tones and the band holding it down. Man, I love The Kinks.
One of my favorite songs
Gotta do the Kinks, off the album'GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT' the song DESTROYER. A song you'll both dig, fun rocker. And some call it LOLA pt. 2
So many great music to react to! I will just mention Celluloid Heroes, Mr. Pleasant and Dead End Street.
Check out their song rock ‘n’ roll fantasy. Lots of really nice harmonies
Love the Kinks!! Got to see them, Pretenders, opened a great show. Thanks again for the smile. Merry Christmas to all.
Was that when Ray and Chrissie were dating?
(Can't believe she dumped him for Jim Kerr of Simple Minds. Yes, closer in age, but seriously trading down, musically.)
This was in an episode of The Sopranos. It fit perfectly.
Always loved The Kinks. My first two singles I bought was Set Me Free & See My Friend. Excellent reaction as usual. Merry Xmas all.
Love this B-side! ❤❤❤Should have done the 1966 studio version!
Total surprise! The original I think was mono, very thin production and I was expecting to be almost apologetic. This was great with that guitar heavy intro and backing. Thanks and a very happy Christmas!
LOVED THAT. I'm learning stuff, never heard that before. AWESOME, THANKS
You must react to The Kinks “Give The People What They Want”.
This is 80’s arena rock Kinks, which I love. The 60’s studio version though not as loud is my preferred version.
React to the song by The Kinks, “Give the People What They Want”
80’s Kinks are so different, but still amazing.
great reaction you two ! I think you will like their song Catch Me Now I'm Falling
"Father Christmas" is a pretty good holiday rocker by The Kinks
Another great band from england is Spandau ballet , my favorite number is "through the barricades"
At the opposite end of the spectrum "A Dedicated follower of fashion' - so ifferent but still SO good! :)
Love the kinks!
Waterloo Sunset! Days! Don’t Forget to Dance
One of my favorite songs ever by one of my favorite bands ever!
This song was used to perfection in The Sopranos.
Wow - somehow I missed this song. What a rocker.
Dave Davies is a brilliant, and somewhat underrated, guitarist!
PLEASE do Destroyer by the Kinks!! It’s like a sequel to Lola
My favorite Kinks song. Ray Davies said this one summed up the band.
The Kinks were the “alt rock” of their time. So good and diverse.
