      Not really. They were really in a relationship. In the scene where they broke up he was asking her why she was tripping about him and the woman he used to date named Lisa and he told her we’re together now. Then when she said he hasn’t given her any reason to trust him then he broke up with her but they were fully in a relationship not a situationship.

    What I didn't like was that neither of the two main characters seemed to be over their exes. How can you expect a relationship to work if you always have someone else in the back of your mind?
    I will say I liked the side characters storylines. All of Darius's friend and their little pow wows were very entertaining.

    Great review! Just a point of contention: Nina wasn't initially a smoker. From the montages we learn that she picks it up from Darius. I think this is a representation of how connected they were to each other. Ok, carry on.

      she actually comments on his smoking in a disparaging way @ the open mic spot when they first meet
      to me, because he didnt pick up any of HER habits, it showed how (as much as people contend this) biologically how women take on the “follower” role in relationships w men. ie: so many women i know who HATED sports became “sports fanatics” b/c their men who fans or taking on their men’s ways (usually their BAD habits interestingly)
      just an observation

    Love Jones is a staple in the Black community, and it’s funny (but not surprising) this film didn’t achieve that much success in the box office. I feel like this film is also influential because over the years I have seen films that tried to copy the romance of two artists that go through trial and tribulations.
    We need to discuss how Darius was low key stalking Nina in the first few minutes of the film 🚩🚩🚩

      It's not stalking. Going after a woman you want is called being a man. If he didn't "stalk" her they would have never got together.

    • @high_off_glowsticks
      @high_off_glowsticks 2 місяці тому +3

      @@CinqueMalcolm yeah thats most definetly stalking, regardless of sex man or woman. That's a crime and if someone is stalking you in the name of "love" to put it simply it's just not meant to be.

    • @CinqueMalcolm
      @CinqueMalcolm 2 місяці тому

      @@high_off_glowsticks She tells him to call her and that she knows the has the number when he's leaving her apartment after showing up unexpectedly after she had already turned him down before. It's called persitence. She was feeling it too. Just like flirting is sexual harassment when the woman doesn't like you, but all good if she does, that's stalking if she wasn't feeling him, but she was. She was the one who made the first move at the poetry spot. She probably turned down dozens of men on their first try, but who ends up getting her? The alleged stalker. He knew she dug him. Women don't act in logical ways. Men who understand that, like Darius, don't accept a no when he knows she's into him even if she won't admit it.

    Great analysis on the love portion. Looking back at a lot of 90s/2000s movies and shows, all the relationships were toxic. 😂 I was watching The Game yesterday, and where I once thought Melanie and Derwin were cute, I realized that their relationship was toxic as hell! 😂😂
    Anyway back to the Love Jones one thing I did really like about this movie was how Nina wasn’t some big time photographer, we saw her in a job role that she didn’t like, and eventually got let go from. To her getting rejected, to the finally achieving success towards the end of the movie. It’s more realistic. A lot of 90s movies show the women super successful, partners are their firm, top marketing associate in their firm, etc etc. And it creates a sort of unrealistic narrative.
