- This video narrates the story of the gruesome assassination of General Murtala Mohammed, who at the time was the Military Head of State of Nigeria. He was assassinated by a group of soldiers led by Lt. Col. Buka Suka Dimka. Dimka was later captured in Afikpo in present day Ebonyi State and tried in a Special Military Tribunal which sat in Lagos. He was found guilty and sentenced to death by firing squad. The story is chilling and heart-wrenching.

Good history but vital parts missing! Dimka was actually driven to a police station by a taxi driver named Okorie Ajah in mile 2 Ishiagu(now Ivo lga Ebonyi state home to former senate president Senator Anyim pius Anyim) Ishiagu was in Afikpo division( then Imo state not Anambra). The hotel where Dimka lodged ( ikenyi friendship Afikpo) was invaded by military men and he was on is escape route to Okigwe(he has to pass through Ishiagu to get to okigwe) he hired a taxi man(Okorie Ajah an Ishiagu indigene) little did dimka know the man identified him and the driver noticed dimka has no weapon with him, he quickly change direction toward a nearest police station Dimka sense the drivers intention and promise the driver huge sum of money if he should let him escape but the driver been a man of intergrity decline to he's(dimka) request and dimka lay a cursed on the man that he will die a poor man if he refuses he's offer( funny enough the taxi man died a poor man what a pity). Getting to police station dimka denied the man seizing and bringing him to the police station he said how can a bloody civilian seize me a gallant soldier and he said I willingly submit myself for arrest and report here(how can that be? No truth in the world). I know this story too well because the taxi Driver is my kinsmen and my Dad told me the story because he's familiar with the Driver and knew when it happens and I've confirm it visiting the drivers family, funny enough The police believe the fat lie by dimka and Nigeria couldn't reward the poor driver(as promised) for he's good work and this truth was covered up.
Many thanks, Ogboke. Glad the facts are close. All points noted. Most grateful, sir,
@ back in history you are welcome sir! Thanks for educating our generation with facts. Keep the good work going sir more grace
Keep Quite there, Dinka handed himself over, he was wasn't betrayed by a useless taxi driver
@@jonathanchai9827 And what's your evidence? You talking based on what you heard. The taxi driver is not useless but you. You don't abuse someone this way.
@@jonathanchai9827 you sound so aggressively like someone who knows the truth but just trying to cover it up. Lies may sell for years but truth will surely send it into extinction with a day.
Crazy how these guys were so young, in their thirties and playing kalo kalo with the destiny of this nation. I respect their boldness and audacity, especially seeing them in their uniforms. Youths are not given the chance these days.
The reason is because these men joined the military at a very tender age
Also because the same people are still running the country.
Youths these days are too soft...the world today has made them soft and not as hard as the youths in the past

Obasanjo has done great evil to Nigeria and yet people see him as a messiah.
It's mostly greedy and those severely uneducated ones
Where is the evil in this documentary?
The audacity and bravery of these young military officers back then is so fascinating. These days, they're all so timid, the only time you see them move mad is against civilians. Smh! See how Dimka boldy admitted to it knowing his end would be death.
Nigerian doggedness start from it's beginning

Good Historical narratives, I find them very interesting and insightful👏 👏 👏. More please 🙏 .
I love these Nigeria history...

These military men back then were really brave
Good quality research and narration. Congratulations.
Correction pls... Man in military uniform wasn't Buka Zuka Dimka,It was ADC to Murtala Muhmd. His name Akintunde Akinsheinwa he was killed alongside M .Muhmd.
Thank you for pointing it out.
You are correct, Owolabi and we appreciate you. That was the editor's error. But we have addressed that in a previous reply to a comment here. We have done some editing to reflect the real character but we earnestly do not know why it is still showing here. The real pix is showing in some browsers currently. We will do our best to ensure that it reflects in all browsers.
We appreciate you as always.
The whole video was made up of juxtapositioned old and new pictures
you are right
The guys that actually did the firing of Murtala - Clement Yildar and Dauda Usman are still missing till date
It’s possible they left the country in the heat and have since returned and farming somewhere
Oh God look at dey county dat i belong too so dox guys have been missing till today?
I’m not in support of firing squad; but my church brain is thinking a robot should have done the firing 🤷🏿♂️
Serves Murtala right! If you kill by the sword, you die by the sword!

Wow i think i love this millitary officers in the late 20s and 30s , they were gallant men of history i which this effort was chanel to the development of Nigeria
Murtala lost in most of his assignment under Yakobu regim during the civil war , 2000 soldiers were depolyed under his command , only 200 returned with injuries yet the victory was not won , Kudoa to the Biafran soilders
It has nothing to do with the Biafran soldiers but the poor leadership from Muritala himself
@@gregoryc7926kudos to the gallant Biafrans
Nigeria O Nigeria, military coup after military coup..then Gen Obasanjo stopped the rot by "retiring" all army generals who participated in past coups when he took over...Gen Sani Abacha--
Dimka the strong man!!! , So its not about tribe but power!!!
This country has gone through a lot.... Enough to create an epic season film

I remember going to national museum when i was ten years old in primary five...almost 15 years ago
Nigeria has been in shamble since day one..
Adekunle the black scorpion defeated the Biafran soilder killing our own brothers, sisters, children due to disagreement , that is not the way of peace its an unending fight in the mind...
This history needs to be taught in school and tk God for UA-cam
Power hungry young military men. Young Nigerian men these days can't even dream of becoming president or governor, what a country.
Murtala did not attend RMA Sandhurst. He was rather trained at Mons Academy, Aldershot
The picture of the officer standing in attention at 13:21 is not Dimka. That's Akinterinwa.
How did Dimka recall an old girlfriend in the midst of his own man hunt?
The story has it that he sent the Manager of the Hotel to call Ugo for him. Dimka was a known guest to the Hotel.
I want to know the truth about MURTALA MOHAMMED IS IT TRUE THAT HE IS OF BEROM STOCK OF JOS, IN PLATEAU STATE?
When Nigeria had brave youths....
Dimka was very handsome tho I wont lie …. It seems men then were very naturally handsome without using today toning creams
Can you imagine, the same group of boys those days who are now ancestors but still piloting the affairs of this country. Nigeria youths you need to ask yourselves question
I love your research, please can you research about abacha death and also Asaba massacre
Yes,The Asaba massacre must be brought into limelight as much as possible
Correction; Afikpo was then under Imo State and not Anambra State.
Many thanks
Afikpo was not in Anambra state rather it was in Imo state and later Abia state and now in Ebonyi state.
Thanks
This is giving me goosebumps
This is educative, Nigeria have lost a lot of good leaders selected by ALLAH,Is so emotional 😢.Such is life, General Murtala, one of the youngest Military president in Africa.
Allah kee you there. Weak mind
If you understand Yoruba language, go and listen to Sunny Ade’s record album titled, Murtala Mohammed.
If you can translate the lyrics we'll be much appreciated
Wrong pictures most of the time but your story is quite accurate.
Nigeria 🇳🇬 would have been a great nation have it be good people like Murtala Muhammed is still alive up till this moment. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
Why repeatedly displaying the picture of It.Col Akinfeyinwa (Murtala Muhammad's ADC) when mentioning Dimka? This was repeatedly done up till 13:34 in the video. Or is that not the picture of Lt.col.Akinfeyinwa repeatedly shown as Dimka?
Akinsheinwa was a Lieutenant not a Lt. Col.
Murtala Ramat Muhammad...R.A.M.A.T...Remember Akinsheninwa Murtala And Taiwo
Wetin toto don do great men. Mtchewwwww

Now we have a 80yrs old man in office
Murtala Mohammed felt he was invincible and loved so much within the army and therefore didn't need heavy security detail or siren to move. However, he paid with his life for overthrowing the government of General yakubu Gowon. The brain behind the plot against Gowon was the ambitious fulani military politician shehu Musa Yar ' Adua and Joseph Garba commander of the brigade of guards. it was a revenge coup by officers from the middle belt for removing their own Gowon.
Was Joseph Garba a Fulani? Actually, Muritala's death was a loss to Nigeria. He was beloved by the Nigerians.
But Gowon already served 9yrs
Again Muritala deserved it as a reward for the asaba massacre during the civil war
You nailed it
@@felixsunday6448 The man dealt with my people
Power and treachery went hand in hand in those days. A similar scenario is that of IBB and Vatsa
Muritala was a four star general at the age of 37 and also the head of state. Now it's 80yrs old man that want to lead Nigeria, possiblity to grave.
A fake 4 star general. How do you go to a war with 20,000 men and better grade weapons and come back with 2,000. Dismiss yourself, reappear again at work for promotion.
Great history
The military have really traumatized Nigeria. They have left a deep scar on the soul of our country, which we have not been able to heal from. The military disfigured the idea of leadership and public service in Nigeria and we are still feeling the effect in every sector of our country-both the private and public sector.
That is the effects of having lots of uneducated and dysfunctional military officers in charge of a growing modern state 🙄
If Dimka was executed in such manner, what is keeping present..........involved in different atrocities?
Great short documentary. Very informative and emotional for me to watch. I remember seeing Murtala's mercedes riddled with bullet holes at the national museum in Lagos when I was a primary school boy. I'm 38 yrs old now living in the US for the past 15 years. Still love and pray for my country Nigeria 🇳🇬🙏🏼.
❤
What has the number of years you've lived in the U.S got to do with this documentary? Unless the 15yrs you've lived in the U.S has ties to the history of Nigeria, I suggest you keep your bragging to yourself.
You keep showing the picture of Akinseyinwa when Dimka is mentioned.
This was so educative. Thank you
Good piece of history
Good job keep on giving us the story of nigerias so that we lean the historia of nigerias
Northerners and power tussle!!
But if the story is true, then Dimka should be blamed bcuz mortala was a betrayer for refusing to keep his promise of creating a state for his friend to rule.
Again, in everything u do, distance from women!
Muritala Muhammed sorry
A detailed & well researched narration. I'm glad the narrator corrected the age-old impression that Late Gen. M. Mohamed was killed on his way to the mosque for Jummat service being a Friday. The News of his assassination was announced much later in the day before his burial thereby giving the impression that his brutal murder happened at that time.
I've once been to the National Museum where the curator led us on a tour & wrongly gave the narrative of him being shot on his way to the mosque.
Looking back in our history, we have indeed come a long way from those era when Coups & Counter-coups were indeed fashionable.
My prayer is that with the spate of coups rearing their ugly heads in other African Nations, our politicians will be forth-right with the citizens in order not to attract Military insurgence back into our polity!
God bless you.... Cos wat led to coups in those days were trivial compere to what is happening now

Dimka was reported to have killed many Igbos during the pogrom in the north. We also know who ordered the Asaba massacre.
Those who leave by the sword eventually die by the sword .
Thanks for the research well narrated historical information. I thought Murtala was the first military head of state in Nigeria
Hmmmm
Aguiyi Ironsi and Yakubu Gowon were there before him
This is what we Nigerians should be reminded of.
Thank you for the great job.
Can we still have such now, free from back hand and upholding the true image of the military.
Why reason's they execuites this man👍
Investigation continues 👍
Nice one
Every last one of them in the uniform is as evil as it gets.
All of them even the deceitful obasanjo
Fools don't learn the wise do .Are we wise???. I leave you to work out the answers.
A history never to be forgotten
Dinka was not the only one who turned back the hand of clock of progress of the country. Some other best attempts to put our nation on the right footing were also foiled by some of our men of very high respect.
But I heard that he was killed in Old Yaba Road in front of a mosque. And then Kwara State Governor too was killed.
I love history
At 36 years old and till now these men have held us down. Exhausted their time and successfully exhausting ours and that of our unborn children. May we receive vision
I love Nigeria history
General Muritala was not the one responsible for the Asaba massacre. Nor Ibrahim Haruna who wanted to be the fall guy at the subsequent Oputa Commission of Inquiry. Ibrahim Taiwo who was commander of the Mechanized Division sent to drive the insurgents out of Asaba and pursue them all the way into Port Harcourt where the navy with troops waited to cut off and surround them, became frustrated and arrogant when the retreating igbo troops blew up the bridge. Blind ambition made him think that he was robbed of a victory and subsequent promotion. Both Asaba survivors and soldiers agreed that he was the one who ordered the round up of civilians under the guise that they were collaborators. Those not of age should stand down from this narrative. The first casualty of war is the truth.
Yoruba and propaganda in igbo affairs
Who were the second casualties of the war?
WE the people en masse.
@@asabadragon4052 Yoruba propaganda against a Yoruba man,Taiwo? Then you should give us the factual account if you were even born at that time.
If Murtala Mohammed wasn’t responsible then who was responsible for the genocide in Asaba? Mchew
Why were you displaying the pictures of the Late Lieutenant Akintunde Akinsehinwa, the ADC to The late Head of State who was equally killed as that of Lt. Col. Bukar Dimka ?
Divide Nigeria and save lives Nigeria is a joke
Good quality research and narration. Congratulations.
One day God will hear our prayer 🙏🙏🙏
History is the recording of the past events which has taken place in the past
What i deduced from this part of History is when u live by the gun you die by the gun. They both took part in the Bloodiest coup in Nigeria that metamorphosed into a Genocide against not only Eastern soldiers but also civilians of Eastern Nigeria that even further led to a Genocidal war.
As an Easterner, if you read true history, you'll almost see yourself thanking God that it was Gowon(even as culpable as he was), that led FG to the war and not Murtala.
During the Genocide against Easterners, Easterners fled back to The East, he wanted to follow them down to East and finish them off ones and for all. it was Gowon that stopped him.
Again if you read true History, you'll see how he miss handled his command during the Genocidal war; he never followed instructions and seemed very rash and bloody tasty.
I think even the commander of Asaba Massacre Bello who Murtala was also his boss, was killed too in the Dimka led coup.
Thus, that's Nigeria for you. One region's hero is another region's villain.
Murtala some how got paid for what he deserved after all he and 1966 chief of staff Gowon together with danjuma young Abacha Young Buhari led the counter coup to revenge the said Igbo coup that gruelsomely took the life of their innocent boss Aguiyi Irons.
Soul is undeadly👍
History is good
It’s obvious that Gen. Gowon who was overthrown and was in exile in London was the one that masterminded the failed coup of Feb 1966.
He wanted to get back at Multala Mohammed who overthrew his government of almost 10 years.
The Gowon administration made no sincere efforts to hand over power to civilian rule and did not implement the so called 3Rs of reconciliation, reconstruction and rehabilitation after the Nigerian-Biafran War.
The multala Mohammed coup was welcomed by so many Nigerians and his administration made so many sincere efforts to develop Nigeria and hand over power to civilian rule.
He was loved by many and that’s why the Lagos international airport was named after him and many took to the street to protest against his coup
Olusegun Obasanjo who was his second in command took over power and implemented most of Multala’s agenda and later conducted an election and hand over power to a democratically elected president Alhaji Shehu Shagari who Gen Mohammadu Buhari overthrew.
Igbos don dey gready right from time
Who were the nine people executed? Do a video about them.
Noted. That will be done. Many thanks.
Its a good thing that they all eliminated themselves, he(Murtala) was involved in the cold blooded killing of Aguyi Ironsi, why God spare Yakubu Gowon is a mystery to me.
Rest In Peace--great Soldier,,, Lt. Col. Buka Suka Dimka...
The issue of age doctoring is typical of Niageria and did not start today. The Murtala i am seeing in this pix was more than 37 years. More so, he had 7 grown up children by then.
