- Here's a fun video of me standing on my drums performing my "exterior drum solo" as David Lee Roth would call it! I played this solo every night on the Eat 'Em and Smile Tour. This particular show was in 1986 in my hometown show at Cobo Arena, Detroit Michigan.
Such a fun band to be a part of.
DETROIT ROCK CITY!
That definitely takes the award for “most pelvic thrusts in a drum solo”😂😂 Love it, super rock n roll fun, thanks for sharing!
The most positive and cheerful drummer!!
Fantastic solo! But you cracked me up with the hip thrusts! 😂
yeah I didn't really need to see that. Now I cannot unsee it. LOL!
Your kit, "Armageddon Kit" I believe you called it, was my favorite drumset ever. Custom drum kits rarely impress me as much as that one did. I was about 14 when "Eat 'Em and Smile" was released and I absolutely wore that album out and dreamt of owning that drum set. Gregg, thank you for being such a positive drumming role model to me all these years. God bless you, brother.
Same age as you and I remember that cassette well. Bought Eat Em' from Columbia House and wore the hell out of it. A solid album
Always a great drummer.
Mr. Versatility! It doesn't matter if its a bombastic rock drum solo with the DLR band, The All-Stars, playing with the Buddy Rich Orchestra or laying down some swinging jazz or latin grooves. Greg, you can do it all, and you do it all very, very well! 👏
How exciting! A fantastic Detroit reception too! love it.
Detroit has tons of music venues and concerts of every kind and size.
Wow! Thanks for sharing this, Gregg! Amazing!!! 🤩🤩🤩
I saw that tour in DC when I was a young wana-be rock star. That show was truly amazing. Even though Dave has an over the top personality, in that show, he gave a ton of time to all of the band members to solo and have fun. It was an incredible inspiration.
I loved your West LA Music drum seminar back in the day - Your Ringo demonstration was so inspiring
That might have been the greatest drum solo I’ve ever seen.
Great solo!
That was such a great band with Steve Vai on guitar and you on the drums!!! Absolutely love the "Eat Em' and Smile EP" and "Skyscraper " album!!!!
Eat 'Em and Smile isn't an EP, it's a full length album.
@@mikal when 1st released, it was marketed as an EP.
Who gives a fuck. Of course everyone has to be right. We can all agree Eat 'em and Smile and Skyscraper were at least great pieces of work.
And Billy Sheehan who was the Steve Vai of bass.
Gregg you are BOSS then and now! I really enjoy watching you play! You’re such a contribution to our drum industry! 🪘
I remember that in Knoxville!!!
Great solo, and I loved that kit! The tuning of the whole kit was great!
Thanks Gregg. Killer album and drummer. Have a good one Hag1 from Australia. ✌️🤘🥁🏴🇦🇺
This is still in my top 5 fav songs
The amazing Gregg B. ! You are a big inspiration for me.
That. Was. Awseome!
What a fun memory that was in Fall of 86 at MSG NYC. That concert seemed like it was 10 minutes long - went by so fast. You guys were so young! We also loved the little steel pan drum story thing you did with Dave. THAT was hilarious.
I saw you with Dave in Helsinki in 1988. It was a great gig. Greetings from Finland.
Gregg is our modern day Buddy Rich. You can only do a solo like that when you're young. It would make a good SNL skit. "Behind the Music" the day Gregg showed Roth how to shake an ass... and keep time.
Bless you for your work and kìnd spirit. Ringo's drummer!!! only one guy on the planet who can say that... 🎶🥁🎶
Awesome solo there Gregg, I love your work with Satriani and Vai/Roth
And then a little Steve Vai vamping at the end, talk about a cherry on top 🤘
Ahhhh...the good ol days!
After hearing you tell me the story last week and now seeing it on film you weren't lying haha
Great solo Greg. Love the dance moves.
Insane!! You are a crazy guy.! That for I luv you 😁
I came for the drum solo but stayed for the dance moves!
I was at the Houston show with Poison opening I believe. Best concert ever! I still have the Modern Drummer issue with that kit on the front cover.
Kick ass solo!!
The wild man! (-;
Seeing you on that tour in Duluth, MN was my FIRST concert! I was in 7th grade, absolutely incredible! That was the best band at that time. You all are such incredible musicians and performers. Nothing could top that lineup!
I was there!!
@@medallion39 no way!!
Simply fantastic Gregg!!!!😂😂😂
Super duper!!❤
Lots of Fun.
I was there!,..Great Album/Amazing Tour,..I was front row…X
That was pretty Ducking awesome.
Must’ve been Dave’s idea to do the Humpty Dance too 😂
Sounds phenomenal!! Saw you at a drum clinic in Northern Virginia over 30 years ago. Will always remember it, keep rocking Greg!
Great solo Gregg!!!!
Pretty Cool. I don't remember him doing This at The Hollywood Sporto
One of my favorite solos ever Greg,…was your recording with Pat Kelly on the track “Is he really There” drum solo was amazing! Thank you
you should break into that solo in the middle of Ringo's set
Hi Gregg, you met me when you went to Wylie East for our percussion concert.
Incredible! I really wish the record label had hired a film production crew to film backstage and the concert and released an "Eat Em and Smile" documentary and full live show. That tour was too incredible not to professionally document. Damn!
As a professional drummer for nearly 4 decades, I can unequivocally say, I'm not a fan of drum solos. I remember seeing Gregg at a Zildjian day event in Boston years ago. He came out and did a big, regalious solo much like this one and the crowd went wild. He then said something like, "pretty cool huh?" And then said, "but that won't get you the gig."
He then proceeded to sit behind a much smaller kit and played a straight, rock groove, for at least a minute or two.
Then he said "THAT'S what will get you the gig." Truer words were never spoken.
Man! ...you made Elvis jealous with those movements, LOL
Super Greg!🤎
Legend
Great 👍👍👍
Been a fan of you ..Since 30 years....Have stolen lots from you also .... :)
I never saw Dave Garibaldi doing “hip” thrusts on his kit - LOL. Would of been a great title for a Tower tune - “Hip Thrust”
So fun!... I always wondered if you guys shot any professional live recording
Mmmm. I like the intro nod to Steve Smith ‘La do da’ / Captured.
And the nod to Carl Palmer with the kick-kick-clap-clap section. Good stuff. (Or was it a nod to Carl via Tommy Aldridge?)
Awesome Gregg thanks for sharing! Now i want to watch the rest of the show! Please post 😂 Saw you guys in 88 in the UK. The most enjoyable and entertaining gig i have ever been to in my life with top musicianship! Loved the steel drum bit you should also post that if you have it. Do you miss not having all those toms? Do you still have that kit somewhere in storage?
Hey Greg, was it your idea to do the group steel drum bit on the Skyscraper tour? Man, that tour was my first ever concert and I was hooked, even though it took a looong time for another show to live up to that high standard.
Kick arse
Wonder uf Ringo would go for that these days??
Every time the singer of my band gets up on my kick drum I want to murder him. Awesome performance Gregg!!
I think you are the first to shake your ass to the crowd during a drum segment 😂😂
Raymond!!
Few OSHA violations there Greg lol!!
The REAL question is: Do you still have the spandex tights?
any brushes technique book u suggest?
Nice hip action 🤣
Simmons Kick Pad hide behind bass drum.
I am reading (listening to) songwriter Holly Knight’s excellent book about her life writing iconic 80’s hit songs, and there’s a PDF included with pix and magazine clippings. The same Rolling Stone article that hails her as one of the top songwriters of 1986 also proclaims EEAS as the WORST ALBUM!! What?!?!
Not sure if I would want a video of me f’ing my drums.
Nice solo. To be honest, I believe you were a much better jazz drummer than a rock drummer. I mean no disrespect.
SORRY........ I'd rather see u on Maynard's band.
ME TOO !
Hip-thrusting his way through Coconut Champagne? 😂
Gregg, you ought to be ashamed of yourself! Play the drum parts instead of your naughty parts! Did your parents see this? LOL
I saw you at Donnington monsters of Rock here in the UK. Awesome gig
