    Dit is geen spuitzand, hij zit niet vlak vol, en kan dus wel degelijk zinken, en snel ook. Pompen? Wat er met 1 golf in komt, moet hij er met een half uur weer uit pompen. En inderdaad geen geblindeerde ramen.
    Met mijn ervaring op zowel zee- als binnenvaart en zowel droge-lading als beunschepen weet ik er misschien toch wel iets van.
    Als de golven iets ongunstiger aankwamen had hij met een paar tellen weg kunnen zijn.

    I know these little bund ships are designed to work like this, but I’d love to know why the tugboat behaves as if it is concerned for the little ship.

    • @ats-3693
      @ats-3693 2 роки тому +1

      They are designed to sit low and carry heavy loads with little freeboard, but they do have a limit to the weight they can carry before the total mass of the barge and its cargo exceeds the mass of the water it displaces and it sinks, dry sand with no water in the spaces between the grains is far lighter than wet sand with the spaces between the grains full of water, the tug boat is there because he's talking to the barges skipper on the radio who is no doubt pretty worried about the amount of water the waves are putting into his hoppers.

    • @josephinebennington7247

    I’m ex British merchant navy and have seen these vessels whilst visiting Hollandshire 😋but never seen one so low in the water when that sea state.
    Something got the Skipper spooked when he/she cane hard to port and slowed down, the tug that was on the Starboard quarter then got involved by closing in on its stern rather quickly, lots of black smoke from tuggy and guessing it got exciting/scary after that.
    Can anyone shine a light on the outcome and I’m assuming aslong as everything is clipped and watertight both aft and forward then it’s standard practice to batter on into rough water with zero free board?

    Nobody noticed how the tug boat stayed around while the the barged turned around : crossing was dangerous anyway, even more dangerous hen the barged decided to go back and make a 180° turn so the sea was abreast…

      Wel lachen die comments. Ik heb nooit gevaren, maar als lasser dit soort dingen wel gemaakt. Ik denk dat 99% van de comments schrijvers geen idee heeft dat er luchtdichte, dubbele rompen bestaan.

    Note the search&rescue tug at the stern !!!!

      That is a tug boat, not for search and rescue. It might look strange but that is the way dutch "beunships" are operated, there was no problem.

    So busy watching the boat looking like it's about to sink, I nearly missed the car he's got behind the bridge. 😅

    India? Bangladesh? no, Belgium. I guess that on upper deck it's an amphibious car used as lifeboat.
    I also guess that they had to send a tugboat to intercept the MV Sissy because he didn't obey to orders on radio!
    Of course the ship is not overloaded in terms of weight, they have double hull that keep them afloat even if water is entering the holds but the sand is not flat and it can be moved by the waves and make the ship capsize.
    Very poor seamanship and/or irresponsible shipowner.
