  • I was sick and tired of flat tires on my front casters. I had tried inner tubes but nothing seemed to work. I was constantly dealing with a flat until I found these Marathon flat free tires at Northern Tool. These have been an excellent investment into my zero turn lawn mower.

    **EDIT**
I have since replaced these front casters with Michelin Tweels. While they were much more expensive they seem to be a better long term solution. Here is a link to that video: • Tweel Casters on Grass...

A fully threaded bolt is NOT meant to be a wheel shaft.

Would a smooth metal surface keep a grease film, though? I'm imagining only if you grease them every few mows.

Flat free tires rock. Have one on my wheelbarrow and on the kids bikes.

When Using Your Ratchet Chain binders, I recommend using White Lithium Grease instead of Oils or Grease. White Lithium Grease Naturally doesn’t draw / collect Dust, Like other greases do. You can also get it in a Spray Can for Convenience. If you can get it in a Squeeze Tube.

PERFECT example of one of those snakes that is up in your face but you can't see them, the threads on the bolts ate up the powdered metal bushings, doesn't matter WHAT TYPE of bearing or bushing you put in the wheel hubs the I.D. of bushing or bearing will be destroyed because the bolt threads are working as a saw on them with every rotation. IF you use a fully threaded from one end to the other bolt you will have to use a full length SLEEVE over the threads

You likely have a spacer in your original wheel that you didn’t remove.

My original rims have bearings inside of the metal caps. Ordered flat free said bearings included but no bearings. Afraid to break the metal out n be stuck with unusable rims.

Dude question, but how do you know which size bearings you need?
Ive been looking and havent found anything about my Mustang 50xp

Most bearings are measured by the shaft and hub diameter. A good auto parts stout or specialty bearing supplier should be able to help you out.

I’d get a sleeve axel to put the bolt through. Using a threaded bolt as an axel seems more like a Mountain Engineering solution. Even bicycle axels aren’t threaded where they pass through the bearing/hub surface area.
Or just get some smooth stock and thread the ends for the nuts ( I recommend castle nuts with split pins )

I upgraded to tweets and put two new axle shafts in. It’s working great now! 👍

Haha, perfect timing for me! Did your ride or cut quality suffer any? (Just started watching the video so sorry if you cover it later!)

Probably some, but if it did I didn't care. The reduction of stress from not having to worry about getting a flat is amazing! I carry a spare for the rear tires so even if I do get a flat I can make the repair and keep going.

You will do yourself some real good if you get some calipers to measure inside and outside dimensions. I prefer digital. Better one will not run down the battery like a cheap one will.

You are getting excess wear from the axle bolt being threaded and having a bushing bearing vs. Ball bearings. It is acting just like a file. Ball bearings should take care of that.

Mine has a spacer the bolt goes through. So threads no way they touch the wheel

This is a kind of how-not-to video. There is so much wrong with the way bearings have been applied, I don't know where to start. A steel spacer is supposed to radially bear on the plain sintered iron bearings(bushings) inside of the wheel hub. The spacer is longer than the assembly, and the sides of the forks tighten against the spacer. Nothing in this assembly should slide/rotate against the bolt. If you substitute ball bearings, NO axial(lengthwise) pressure can be exerted on the bearings. The low speed bearings selected are the worst ball bearings available. If you tighten the fork legs against those horrible chinesium ball bearings, I assure you that they will fail soon. Pro tip: measure your components before purchasing bearings. Buy bearings to match the bolt and hub bore. If no match is available, then you will have to source/make bushings to adapt. I really wanted to know about the quality of the wheel tire assembly, but now, oof.

Yep, these no flat tires were junk and ice since upgraded to the much more expensive Michelin tweels which come with proper bearings.

@@ThriftyGarageWhy don't you update the whole title of your video about marathons being junk so people don't waste their time?

    • @ThriftyGarage
      @ThriftyGarage  3 роки тому +2

I’m sorry the video is out of date. I wish I could go back and edit it. I’m not sure how I would change the title. It is still an accurate description of what the video is about. As I mentioned in the video I would do an update which I did with the Michelin tweels. I’ll try and update the cards and end screen to show that more updated video.

I read in the comments where you conceded that the Marathons sucked so you bought Michellin. But your description still only shows the waste of money option. Please edit

I see nothing 'thrifty' about the price of those tires.
If you were REALLY "thrifty", you would do what I do. Go to home depot , or about any local store and buy a couple cans of expanding foam. Drill 3 holes right threw the middle of the tire tread about equally spaced, around the circumference of the tire, and apply foam in the tire. It will never go flat again.

The nice thing about being thrifty is eventually you dig yourself out of a hole. When I started the channel I was so broke I used free pallet wood to finish my garage walls. Now I own a business and sometimes time is money. I tried the “cheap fix” with these tires the first time. Second time it wasn’t worth messing with.
