I had no use for this information. I just got a new pump to replace my perfectly fine, 1986 model super pump. But I enjoyed the video! I am choosing to keep the old pump as a backup, but after seeing this, maybe ill do a winter project on it.

thanks for this video. specifically mentioning that the 2 ceramic pieces mate AGAINST each other, forming a mechanical seal. I was under the impression that the rubber met the white ceramic. I rebuilt a pump last week (deep well jet pump, Sta-Rite MSG-6 2 HP) but basically the same seal arrangement. But the pump was slinging water after the build and I had trouble determining why it was leaking despite having all brand new parts. This video explained how the arrangement goes and why it goes that way. A lot of other videos on UA-cam fail to mention that.Thank you!

I've replaced a number of them over the past few years. In April 2017 I bought a brand new unit 1HP motor with pump. It started leaking July 2018. Not sure if the leak was the ceramic spring seal or the gasket but if you take them apart you might as well replace all. Considering the unit was only 16 months old I could not believe how hard it was to get the impeller off. I had an 11 MM wrench on the end of the shaft (that fits the shaft a bit tighter than the 7/16) and a strap wrench on the impeller. The 11 MM open end wrench kept bending and flying across the garage. Finally held the end with vice grips and managed to get the impeller lose. It was all downhill from there. But again...when I saw you just give the impeller a little jerk with your vice grips and it came lose..I had to laugh.

Thank you for the great video. Easy to follow, and good info on the graphite FYI. I'm pleasantly surprised about the user-friendliness of these pumps. Removed a couple of pebbles and dead wood lodged in the impeller. Despite some basic cleaning, de-rusting , and re-greasing gaskets, my motor still gets very hot to the touch to the tune of 160-180 F, but not enough to trip the heat-protection switch (so maybe that's just normal). For now, I'll just continue to run it at night with cooler ambient temp, and less load by only opening the valves 25% to 50%; 'just' until I start to hear cavitation. Regardless, if it DOES eventually go bad, then thanks to you I now have the confidence to replace just the motor instead of the entire assembly. Thanks again!

Very good video. I found two design variations in my pump: (A) The cover on the electrical end of my pump did not have to be removed--just pop off the 1 5/8 in cap over the end of the shaft and a large screw driver will fit in the shaft end and you can put a wrench on the blade to lock in against the bench while you use a large plier to loosen the impeller carefully in a counter clockwise twist with the right hand. (
    B) My pump had no difusser between impeller and the black housing so no difusser gasket (HAY-101-2016 SPX1600R) is needed. But if you have four parts instead of three or don't know go ahead and get the gasket. Now a couple of tips: The part of the seal that fits on the impeller may come off in two parts so be sure and remove the metal part from the impeller or the new seal will not go on. The seal part in the seal plate also may come out in two parts so be sure to remove the rubber ring. One last tip--on the mounting plate to the motor one of my bolts (3/8" stainless steel bolt with 9/16 hex cap) was so rusted my socket wrench would not loosen it so I finally used steel punch with a small tip and was able to get enough counter clockwise torque with the hammer on some of the remaining hex cap to loosen it. Our Sears Hardware had stainless steel replacement bolts for 75 c each.

I followed your video to a tee.....however I am just now noticing at 8:56 in your video you quietly went off screen to remove the rubber seal that slipped off and remained on the impeller...I did not notice this. I failed to catch this part during my removal and left that piece on when I reassembled the pump. Oh my what a mess. I roasted the porcelain seal and smoke poured out of the basket area when I opened lid. Totally my fault but I did not catch this on your video until I watched it for a 5th time...you may want to ad a footnote. Good job over all with the video helped me immensely ....now tomorrow I go buy another kit and do it again! Ha

Remove the rubber seal that slipped off?
You mean that seal was supposed to come off with the first seal he twisted off?
Are you saying there are two seals?

You don't need to remove the capacitor or the starting switch to lock the impeller. Just a FYI to save time. Slide wrench in from the top straight down and turn impeller until wrench slides on locking points.

Thanks for the video. How is it that your motor looks that corroded and still works!? My new motor failed after 2 years due to the rear bearing completely locking up. Motor still looks brand new on the outside with no obvious corrosion or water damage inside either. Replaced the bearing and motor shaft spins freely in my hand, but still grinds to a halt when turned on! New motor on the way, so I'll change the seal too I guess.

I'm a little stumped...replaced my mechanical seal after buying a new motor, and the damn thing is leaking where the graphite meets the ceramic....I feel like the seal on the impeller is not contacting the ceramic with a enough force.
The impeller is all the way on shaft , confirmed by it turning the shaft.
I went ahead and bought a new seal plate and mechanical seal and will see if that fixes it.
I bored a hole into the motor mounting plate so I could use a bore scope to verify that the mechanical seal was leaking.

Do also change the gasket of the diffuser while you’re at it! The clowns that did the job last time on my unit (third party company) didn’t and turns out it was completely shot. I’m actually thinking it was what created my leaking issue and not the seal itself!

One thing I noticed is you did not install an impeller wear ring SPX3005R which is placed thick side towards diffuser but sits on the impeller itself. When you took it apart I did not see it either was this missing as a superpump shows this installed in the manual. They also talk about a housing gasket spx3000T installed after the impeller but before the seal plate. Any thoughts?

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't notice an impeller ring - either when you dis-assembled, or when you re-assembled. Was there one? If not, does that mean it's an optional part?

I would think that encourages over tightening. He mentions the bolts are screwing into a brass fitting embedded in the plastic housing. Over tighten and pull one of those out, and you're now shopping for a new housing.
I know what you mean, mine doesn't have washers and the bolt heads are cutting into the plastic, but it serves as a reminder that you need to be careful about cranking down on them.
