  • @melanieredfield9736

Yes Stevie wrote this. It's funky, bluesy, and showcases his soulful vocals that are often described as "honey over gravel". His guitar greatness/legendary status always gets such attention that his vocal abilities are often neglected, and that's a shame. He lacked the same confidence in his singing that he had as a guitarist; but when he lets that growl and Texas drawl loose, his voice is killer! SRV is still considered the guitar GOAT for a reason, but as you just discovered, his talents as a singer & songwriter are impressive.

His loss, may he rest in peace, was a huge blow to music. I am so thankful I can say I got to be one that got to experience his pouring his soul out to his fans while playing and singing. Well Stevie adapts his voice to what best suits the song so his voice takes on different tones, nuances, and intensity. I'm sure that is what surprised him here. He heard Texas Flood, Voodoo Chile, and Pride and Joy so far. Next should be Tin Pan Alley to hear still another flavor.🎸🎶💙

You would enjoy the video of him going through a sound check...as a performer yourself, you surely know what the purpose of a sound check is, and how mono-nondramatic it is supposed to be. Stevie doesn't do mono-nondramatic. Live performances were everything back then, and I consider myself lucky to have taken so many of them in...he was incredibly special.
there are some other must views of SRV, like Tin Pan Alley w/Johnny Copeland, Lenny (original about his wife and guitar), Voodoo Child, Texas Flood, and Life by the Drop. You have reacted to some already, and this list most certainly isn't the complete list of SRV's greatest must-view tracks, but it is a good start.

When Lou Ann Barton quit the band, they were left without a singer. Stevie had sung a couple while she was offstage, so he had some experience, but he didn’t have the same confidence in his singing and leading a show, sort of how Eric Clapton was before Derek and the Dominos. He overcame his fears and just did it, practicing his singing like he did his guitar work, until he got to this glorious point. His songwriting skills grew too, and he had just gotten to his full bloom and started to get really famous outside of Texas when he was in the helicopter crash. In Austin, everyone was devastated, and I don’t think the music scene ever completely recovered. The city put a statue up at Auditorium Shores, between Palmer Auditorium and the Colorado River, where he and Double Trouble used to play. I remember canoes and paddle boats in the river behind the stage, and thinking they had the right idea, the best seats.

Yes, this is a Stevie Ray "original" written in the 80s, Just as much as Hendrix - Clapton - VanHalen - BB - Muddy - John Lee and so many others, Stevie just had a huge passion and just loved to play. I am truly enjoying your reviews on the older music - but even more so on what we considered the "Greats" We were lucky to live in the time and to go and see these guys on occasion, I even get a sense of...pride?... for the performer, when you are blown away and give respect to these guys, many younger folks just don't care about what happened or what came before them today. This stuff is what formed our youth and lives - seeing someone younger appreciate it is pretty awesome dude. thanks...

That's his brother, Jimmie's coat. Jimmie wears it when Stevie played at inargural ball for Pres GW Bush. And if you check the sound check video, he's in his wife's faux leopard skin coat. He often wore her shirts and clothes from Lou Ann Barton, too. He wasn't too particular what closet he got his clothes, shoes, and jewelry.
You need to see Tin Pan Alley/Dirty Pool for some more slow blues grom SRV. Stang Swang, Goin Home, Chitlins Con Carne (cover of jazz musician Kenny Burrell), Lenny, Riviera Paradise for jazz blues.
