  • Hey everyone, I got my first baritone guitar today! It did come with a few issues, but I'm loving it regardless! The issues are with the output jack and switch, but the overall playability of it is great otherwise!

    RE: The QC issues mine had - Initially I decided to try giving Fender's warranty department a shot at resolving the problems, I called them and they advised me to take it to Guitar Center, which is an "authorized service center", and was told there would be no issues having the parts replaced. So I did that and unsurprisingly it ended up being a complete waste of time - the tech at GC contradicted what I was told on the phone by Fender, he claimed since the parts are "technically functional" they wouldn't be covered under Fender's warranty. He also clarified to me that they apparently can't use any parts they have on-hand/in-stock at the store, they have to file a claim and wait for Fender to deliver the specific replacement parts, and right now that has a lead-time of about 4 weeks.
    So I ended up ordering a new switch and jack, then replaced them myself - everything has been great since I made the swap and I continue to love the guitar!
    This is the switch I ended up using (affiliate link): amzn.to/2UipT4f
    This is the jack I ended up using (affiliate link): amzn.to/37GELwy - although the jack plate doesn't fully cover the route in the side of the body, so there might be a better options available.

      This (and how expensive used Squier baritones are) is why I made my own with an MJT body and a fender subsonic neck. Great video and production skills!

      Thanks for the kind words! I've been interested in going the partscaster route, but I've generally had good luck with Squiers in the past, so I thought this would be a nice introduction to Baritones - and overall I'm still happy, it plays great and imo issues with the electronics is a best-case scenario. I've got the replacement parts on order and will probably do a follow up video on it (but no promises lol).

      You could have bought a new jack and reused the existing jack plate. The "gold standard" input jacks are made (in the USA) by switchcraft. They are ~$2-3 each.

    Switch and jack issues are apparently common on these. My first one was a sunburst, used but mint. Switch was OK, jack was bad, but I always put an Electrosocket and Switchcraft jack on Teles anyway. Then my dealer got a black 2021. Preferred the colour and lower price, so I traded "down". Switch and jack both OK, and it was lighter! Love the stock pickups and controls...

    I had the same issue with the jack. I ended up soldering in a new jack (Proline brand) and now the cable fits nice and tight! I might have to look into replacing the switch too at a later date. Other than the jack issue, I love the guitar!

    Just picked one up today. Same issue with the jack. I bought it in store and should have mentioned it but its not a big deal for me to fix. The switch seems ok so far. I dont really gig as of now so not a big deal for me to have to fix a guitar from the heard lol. They just sit in racks in my home studio till played. But so far I’m loving this thing.

      Seems par for the course - glad you're enjoying it still, mine is in the exact same use case, sitting in a rack waiting to be picked up haha.

      @@MattPula just bent the input jack tip in a little and all is well! My switch stays put though, guess i lucked out. I thought they were p90’s but apparently theyre a90 pickups bc theyre alnico.

      That's a bummer, I've seen a lot of anecdotes about QC issues with this run of 2021 Paranormal guitars (not just the baritone) - I hope you're able to get yours fixed without too much additional hassle, I swapped out the switch and jack on mine and it's been great ever since.

      I pulled the trigger on one of these in Surf Green this week, and replacement pots, cap, switch and jack are already in my Stewmac cart. Just waiting until it arrives so I can measure the resistance on the pots to make sure I’m getting the right ones. It’s a little disappointing that at this point you are pretty much expecting certain issues with this guitar, but it’s such a good value otherwise: with an additional $60 in parts, it *feels* like I’m spending $500 for a guitar that should cost at least $750.

    That sounds killer! I loved the tones, with OD & fuzz even more (though, playing chords with fuzz can get a bit mushy). BTW what’s that delay/reverb you got going sounds awesome.
    I was contemplating getting this one, or going the budget Chinese partscaster route. I decided to go the partscaster route… Now my flame maple veneer has glue lines, my neck doesn’t fit properly & the control plate never showed up 😢😉
    But… I’ve got an aqua/pink flame maple centre now & sprayed a blue crackle burst, covering the glue lines; some sanding will ensure the neck will fit tightly & a new control plate is on the way. So, I’m about 1/2-way there. A 2nd hand seymore duncan mini humbucker in the neck (with push-push on the tone knob) & a new wilkinson vintage tele alnico 5 in the bridge will finish the job nicely.
    All in, paints & parts I’ll be about €170 ($200) roughly I think. All I need to do then is tune & intonate it properly. More importantly it looks the way I want it & has a story.

      Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to write this comment! I had both the Keeley Caverns and the Keeley Eccos on my board for this video but I can't recall if I was actually using the Eccos or not - probably just the Caverns.
      Your parts guitar sounds awesome - I've started looking at some tele bodies myself to potentially do something like that, but it probably won't be for a while. I'm sure yours is going to be great once it's all finished - let me know how it goes!

  • @stuartmiller7419

    Given that the Tele was one of the earliest electric guitars, it never ceases to amaze me that they STILL can't get the input jack right. The jack either pops out (as you show) or the whole jack assembly pops out. It beggers belief. It's almost like a naff homage to its own history.

    I’ve seen people throw bass VI strings on baritones and it works out. Would it work with these? Happy holidays!

    • @MattPula
      @MattPula  2 роки тому

      Just from some quick googling it seems the standard bass VI string set is quite a bit thicker than what comes on this guitar - .014-.068 Gauges on this baritone vs .024-.100 for the bass VI - the scale lengths are also different, 27" vs 30". You could maybe use the bass VI gauge strings, but it might require some modifications (nut slots and tuning pegs reamed out) and you'd definitely have to tune a few steps lower than B-standard because of the scale length difference.

    I really hate the click bait ‘QC issues’ . That jack issue was an issue on my 52 reissue fender Tele. It’s the telecaster design not Squier issue.

    • @MattPula
      @MattPula  2 роки тому +2

      Incorrect. I've had two other bullet teles Ion my channel that have the exact same jacks and they are flawless. Also the switch on this baritone was a broken piece of garbage. If your fender's jack is doing the same thing, it's not by design, it's junk and needs to be replaced.
      Like it or not, the QC on Squires has not been kept at the same level as it was just a year ago - and if I'm finding QC issues I don't really see how it's click bait to mention that in the thumbnail. That's like the most tame click bait I can imagine, lol. Would it be click bait if I said I play the guitar as well? Haha
