This is a Greek Orthodox Church built for the orthodox Christians to come and pray and appreciate this magnificent and beautiful church .This was not built to be used as a mosque .This is a crime against the orthodox Christians and above all the Greeks who had the knowledge and ingenuity to build this amazing structure in the first place.The day will come when this will be returned to its rightful owners.

It was built before the great schism between the Orthodox and Catholic churches occurred. It is the central Orthodox Christian cathedral now but it is more accurate to say it was built for all Christians as it existed before the Catholic and Orthodox denominations even existed.

The Sultan understood Islam and Tawhid that's why he covered up the images inside it. If Prayers are going to resume, then a big cloth with the Shahada should cover up those images during Prayers. Then when tourists come, the cloth could be rolled up. But the true way is to remove all those pictures.
Narrated 'Aishah رضي الله عنها:
"Umm Habiba and Umm Salamah رضي الله عنهما mentioned a church that they had seen in Ethiopia, and in the church there were pictures. When they told the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم of this, he said: "Those people are such that if a pious man amongst them died, they build a place of worship over his grave and paint these pictures in it. Those people will be Allah's worst creatures on the Day of Resurrection. "

Muslims are required to believe in the revealed Scriptures and to make no distinction between any of them, or the Messengers who brought them, may Allah exalt their mention, because they all come from the One True God.
The Quran says (what means): "Say (O Muhammad to the Jews and Christians): 'We believe in Allah and that which has been sent to us and that which has been sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and to Al-Asbat, (the offspring of the twelve sons of Jacob) and that which has been given to Moses and Jesus, and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted (in Islam).” [Quran 2:136]

I'm glad I got to see the Hagia Sophia the last year before it was converted back into a mosque. What a shame that Turkey is playing politics with religion using UNESCO world heritage site. I absolutely support Turkey's decision to convert this Museum which once was a masjid. Can anyone bring an example where the Victor Sultan Mohammad Fateh although won the battle but still paying for the land and building? No one can. Now it is under control of Turkish government. Being a sovereign nation Turkey has the right to do whatever they want to do with Hagia Sophia. Those who are now shouting and crying their hypocrisy is evident. Where they were when Babri Mosque, Masjid e Aqsa many other mosques were attacked and bombarded. They need to understand and respect Turkey's right to preserve its sovereignty. It is entirely Turkey's internal matter.

Facts:
Ayasofya was illegally turned into a Museum.
The rare carpet laid on the floor was cut and distributed here and there as souvenirs.
Antique chandaliers were taken to the foundry to be melted.
The madrasah adjacent to the mosque was destroyed without reason.
The famous masterpiece plates seen in the interior could not be removed from the doors being too small so they left them inside.
This is only the bare mininum of the illegal destruction of important things to do with the mosque.
They also planned to knock down the minarets but historian Ibrahim Hakki Konyali published a report saying the minarets support the dome and if they are destroyed, the Hagia Sophia will collapse.
They backtracked on the idea, but the minaret of Little Ayasofya was destroyed overnight without any legal basis.
During the hundreds of years it operated as a mosque, symbolic Christian artifacts/tiles/paintings and the tomb on the second floor were all preserved and protected.
Even though Muslims were praying there all the time, they respected and protected its heritage as a Church.
The decision now in 2020 is just a reversal of a dark coup-like theft of the true identity of Hagia Sophia during Turkey's single party period. It is now returning to its former glory, how it once was for hundreds of years.
It is also important to note that when Fatih conqiered Istanbul he had earned the title of the Roman Emperor and had all rights over the property of the Byzantine dynasty. According to that law, the ownership of the Hagia Sophia was given to Fatih and the foundation established by him.
Putting all this aside, under international law there is nothing illegal over Turkey's decision to withdraw Hagia Sophia from its title as Museum and revert it to a mosque.
Side note: Turkey has 435 Churches and Synagogues open for worship in the country, all with communities Turkey has always supported, protected and funded. Compare this with those leaders/countries who cry croc-tears the most over Ayasofya, and see how many Mosques/temples etc they have for their minority citizens.
Greece is one of the biggest culprits. Still not one official Mosque in Athens, even though native Muslims have been pleading for years, yet they have the audacity to throw mud over the action of reverting Hagia Sophia to a mosque

It's a wonderful place. When I first visitted Ayasofiya in 2001 december, I felt like I was in the medieval ages. My second visit was in 2019 although I could have visitted it numerous times during my time as a student in Turkey. This place is truly unique, it has special aura I don't know how to describe. When you walk in upper floor you will notice a some sort of balcony made of marble and there will be Nordic scripts made by a viking with his axe way before Ottomans conquered Istanbul. Imagine stepping over the same spot where once a viking was standing.
