I purchased a 1994 Legacy Turbo wagon for $300 off Craigslist circa 2010. Ran and drove, front bumper was missing.

It was listed for months, the lady who owned it had no idea what it was. She bought it as a cheap commuter.
Subarus are inherently garbage, the early/mid nineties weren’t terrible, they got much worse with the EJ25.
Subarus are a cult, they are expensive, parts are expensive, and you need double of everything in the engine bay. Including machine work. They engines pop head gaskets, use oil, leak oil, and then the rods exit the chat.
But somehow people defend them, and continue to buy them. I learned my lesson on that 1994 (engine failed), and a 1999 forester that cooked the head gaskets (had headgaskets and a new reman block under warranty by Subaru) and it made 30k before it cooked the third set of HG).
I commend you on saving them, but make no excuses, I would rather have a Lebaron. And that’s a terrible car.
You should buy that low mileage Oldsmobile, my aunt had one when I was a kid.
