Felis 747-200 Full Tutorial - Part 1 - Flight Engineer Setup
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2021
- Part One of a tutorial series looking at the Felis 747-200. Flying from London Heathrow to Phoenix Sky Harbor, in this video we’ll be preparing the aircraft for the flight as the flight engineer would do.
Errors, Omissions, Clarifications:-
Make sure you don't accidentally hit the Pack 2 when scroll wheel zooming!
Passenger weights: An average passenger weight, including carry on bags, in 2021, can be assumed to be 88kg, plus another 17kg average for hold baggage. However when the 747-200 was in regular airline service 77kg would have been a more likely figure due to reduced overall passenger weights and lighter carry-on bags. As such, 100KG per passenger including hold bags seems like a reasonable compromise.
When starting the APU, the DC meters should be selected to APU Batt to monitor the drain on startup.
The fine print:
It shouldn't need to be said, but please remember these videos are for recreational simulation and entertainment purposes, not real world flight instruction.
Unlike most videos on the channel, I have been given free access to the 747 by Felis as a result of participating in the Beta testing program. My videos are not intended to be an outright promotion of the product, but rather as informative tutorials with the model.

I worked on the B747 classic for 25 years and became a licensed engineer on same. I wish to congratulate you on the accuracy and factual correctness of your presentation, well done!
Thanks very much, I had a lot of help from a friendly 747 FE who was very involved in the development process, so I really wanted to make sure that part was as close to correct as I could manage.
Hello, how are you? I just wanted to ask for your help. It's been days since I bought the felis 747200 for x plane 11 but I don't know why every time I take off the plane and raise the landing gear, the hyd 4 qty falls and lowers itself, do you know why? I need your help thank you very much
I like how simplistic the flight engineer panel is once you actually look at it closely.
Exactly - Boeing did a great job on the design layout.
This aircraft is sooo detailed. This is hardcore simulator level. Salute to those who can operate this aircraft !
Glad you liked the video - yes the 747-200 is a bit harder than modern aircraft, but it's all fairly logical after a couple of runs through it.
@@ReflectedRealitySimulations Best X-Plane aircraft for me. Loving it.
Hands down the most underestimated flight sim channel on UA-cam. Top quality content!
Thanks Andrey!
I still cant believe just how much all this stuff is now in "auto" mode now
Yes it's still all the same systems, but mostly now set and forget. Nice to have the flight engineer experience.
Thank you for this detailed tutorial. This aircraft is more difficult than all the others I've owned, so it's nice to watch someone go through it properly.
You're welcome! It's a challenging aircraft with all the systems, but taken in little parts it's all fairly logical.
I always looked for very professionally made tutorials and finally found not just the video but the whole channel. This is Brilliant! I’m amazed with your work on this! Fantastic!!!
Thanks Eduardo, glad you like the channel! I should have some more exciting content later this year or early next year.
Wow! The systems simulation is really really deep, at par with PMDG. This tutorial really helped me clear up a lot of misconceptions and is a treasure trove of knowledge. Can't wait to get my hands dirty on this one!
Yes it's a very nice simulation indeed!
Amazing! So happy to see this series begin! As always, I appreciate the amazing content and all the knowledge you share.
Thanks David - hope you enjoy the rest of the videos.
Brilliant, as all your tutorials are! Loved the pace, the technical explanations and the how the flows were explained. Can't wait for the next series. And indeed Felis did right on calling you to beta test this aircraft, can't think of a better person to do it.
Thank You Sajeel. It's a complex aircraft to get familiar with, so I hoped using two videos where there would normally be one would make it easier keep up with.
Simply the best flight sim channel. Thanks a lot Graeme :), as always!
Very kinds, thanks!
I have been waiting for your in depth tutorial for this bird. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks, hope it's living up to your expectation so far.
I love your videos and the Felis 747 is an amazing simulation!
It's a really nice addon - even with one engine version and passenger config it's such an iconic machine, and Felis has plans to add other variants too which will be nice to see.
Thanks a lot for the video!✈️
Excellent tutorial video, as always. Many thanks!
Thanks very much!
Thanks for the tutorial, it's very nice to hear someone speak calmly :D
I now just need to find more time to fly, my computer crashed during the inital climb of my first flight -_-
Oh dear - computer crashes that ruin your flight are not fun. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial though.
@@ReflectedRealitySimulations that's very rare. i manage to do a CYVR-KSFO yesterday.
Just a question, how do you get the fpln you posted below? is it a format directly exported ?
Looking forward to this series.
Thanks Glenn, I'll do my best to get them all out as soon as possible!
Awesome, great detail in there, love it.
Thanks Fred, glad you liked it!
Thank you to give me the confidence to purchase this amazing bird. Came from Flight Deck 2 Sim!
Thanks James, Hope you enjoy the aircraft!
My favorite 747 variant...good job
I do love the 747. I'd like a nice -400 in the sim too just to ease the workload, but the -200 is a classic machine!
Use reshade with gamma correction, it's absolute darkness in here
Just bought this today, I fly mostly the IXEG 737 and the Zibo sometimes. MSFS just doesn't do it for me, nice GFX but the rest feels to arcade like. Look forward to learning this. Test flights from Prestwick Scotland then first Cargo flights from Luxembourg to Narita and Chicago. Need to check out your other videos, the quality is top notch, cheers.
Thanks for the nice feedback Iain, hope you're having fun with the 747. I think it has some of that IXEG feel to it. Prestwick was home to a lot of the test flying I did with this one!
Thank you for your very good tutorial. I notice that Felis did a great job with the INS, which I used in real life as a former flight engineer(DC8 and DC10). He forgot to add the MSU lights when the test button is depressed on the CDU , should be good to add this in a future update, if you can tell him.
Oh I didn't spot that. Yes I'll feed that back, thanks very much.
This is the best explaining-video with a no easy and old fashion airplane! An absolutly brilliant instructor! Because I would fly with the INS-System (and not with the X-Plane 11 FMC) I would ask how I can become the same flightplane into my tablet in the B747-200 (which flightplane-program and what are the steps to fill in there)? Because skyvector would give an oposit direction to UUDD.Thank you for help.
Thanks for the nice feedback, and sorry for the delay replying. The flightplan format you see was created manually by copy-pasting the waypoints from a Simbrief plan. Some of the simbrief formats like "BAW" have a page with a list of waypoints which is very useful for this sort of flying.
ah a fellow Scotsman, hello😊 great tutorial, i don't have this bird yet but it may be on the cards😊
Thanks, glad you liked the tutorial!
"I don't need the tutorial! I've flown enough of these before… I can skim the checklists and yolo it."
two hours later: charge down the runway at Gatwick, waffle into the air… zero chance of a safe and controlled return to the runway
Sim SOP check to standard - line check passed!
Very impressive and comprehensive tutorial and I followed exactly the way you have explained BUT I am having problem , I don't get to observe the sound after APU start as yours show and also the big I have is that after engine start I have too much smoke coming out from the engine .. white thick which is so bothersome and yours doesn't show it. What am I doing wrong or do I need to have some setup to work on. Please guide me through. Thanks a bunch
BTW I have the latest update for Felis 747-200 recently did.
Sorry for the delay replying John, and thanks for the nice feedback. I’ve not seen those issues before. The engine smoke could perhaps be the stock X-Plane smoke system (usually the X key), but I don’t know about the sound. Your best best is the Felis Discord - I think there’s a link in the x-plane.org forum, however Felis himself is in Ukraine so you may not hear from him directly at the moment.
Hi. Thanks so much for your work. I recently purchased this plane, but I'm having trouble with the checklist that came with the plane. Have you or anyone else you know made a video that runs through the checklist that came with this plane? I've found a number of great tutorials, but none that follow the intended flow of the planes' checklist, so I get stuck every time, because I don't know which is in the wrong position that brings my attempt to follow the checklist to a screeching halt.
I'd really appreciate a rundown of the supplied procedures.
Thank you and a very merry new year to you and yours.
Thanks Randy, Happy New Year. I don’t know of a tutorial using the TWA procedures that the checklists are based on. The testers with 747 experience all commented that the checklist procedures were a bit unusual - TWA seemed to revel in doing things differently from other operators. I try and show a logical method to use the aircraft that works with most of the checklist and explain why I’m doing something different where required.

Thanks for the videos, they are very helpfull. I am used to fly in the Boeing 727 from FJS and I am wondering if I can use the auto-pilot in the Boeing 747-200 like I am used to do in the 727. I mean without Fly plan. I try to set up an altitude, heading but it doesn't seems to act like in the 727. Most of the time I use the auto pilot to fly around my departure airport and try as many landing as I can using ILS landing or not. Is it possible to use the auto pilot and do an ILS landing without a proper fly plan in the classic and if the answer is yes, I would love to have some explanations about it. Thanks again for the videos.
Yes, it’s possible. You will still need to align the INS though. The reason for this is the INS system provides the input for the attitude indicator, which the autopilot needs to work. Once the INS is aligned, you’ll have no issues with the autopilot. The 727 has traditional gyros for the attitude so it doesn’t need an INS for the autopilot.
Excellent tutorial. But a lot of things to remember. Can you share this tutorial with us in the form of a checklist? thanks again
Thanks for the nice feedback. I don't have a written checklist for this aircraft as it's got the integrated checklist feature. There's also manuals included that follow a similar setup procedures.
@@ReflectedRealitySimulations Hello,
Hello,
Thank you for your answer. I am a private pilot in life. I am a passionate for life. I fly every day and I do simu every 2 days since the beginning of XPlane. In my life as a pilot, I have never flown a real 747 like the Felis. I like the difficulty because I have to learn. I haven't seen the navigation system yet. However, I have watched your 2 tutorials and copied your procedures step by step. So I have the pre-startup check in writing. There are some things I don't understand yet (timeline) but it will come. Thanks in any case for your fantastic tutorials.
Sincerely
does this have automated flight engineer like A2A's B377 has? or can it be operated and flown without using the engineer's position. Thanks. Great video!
There isn't an automated flight engineer, but really the engineer workload in flight is very low. You need to do a couple of fuel system changes during the flight, and set the pressurisation for any step climbs or final descent. Other than that, all the flight engineer tasks are really done on the ground.
@@ReflectedRealitySimulations Thanks
Thanks for super tutorial - I wanna ask - is necessary to use AT in this plane? I was watching all YT cocpit video this real plane and no of them used it
No it's not necessary, and in fact can be more work than just moving the throttles. The throttles are usually looked after by the flight engineer though, so as a result when you're single pilot the AT can make life a bit easier, especially when you're doing additional stuff like navaid tuning, fuel crossfeed setup etc.
@@ReflectedRealitySimulations thanks for reply, one time I have to make flight without AT. 🙂
Some of the early -200s came without FFRATS (full flight regime autothrottles) so the AT could only be used for takeoff and approach. The remainder of the time, the thrust had to be taken care of manually. Also, with EEC/FADEC being absent, asymmetric thrust lever positions were quite common!
Awesome tutorial but lots to remember. Do you follow a checklist that I can find somewhere?
Thanks Christian. I'm afraid I don't have a checklist for this aircraft, but the included manual should walk you through the process.
First...great to see something from you.i knew you'd jump on this asap xD
Thanks Jack - literally 60 seconds after publishing, nice work ;-)
How do I get the 747-200 I can’t find out
It's on the X-Plane.org Store - store.x-plane.org/Boeing-747-200-Classic_p_1491.html
Any reason for not switching recirculating fan zone 1 on?
Recirc fan 1 feeds the cockpit and upper deck, by leaving it switched off the flight crew are provided with fresh air continuously rather than mixed recirculated air. My understanding is some operators had this as standard procedures, and at other operators the pilots tended to do it anyway!
@@ReflectedRealitySimulations It was very noisy too
This is the best tutorial today. Like and subscribe from me.
Great tutorial. Thanks. However, it would be even greater if you did another one, more "essential", in order to facilitate the memorization of the whole process ... if I may ask ...
Thanks Francesco. The included manual shows the setup process, so that should cover most of the key items. It's really like any other modern jet, so you need batteries, then APU start, APU bleed, fuel pumps, hydraulic pumps, instruments and navigation and then you're pretty much good to go.
@@ReflectedRealitySimulations Thanks for your kind reply. I saw that manual.... but a "live" explanation of yours would be more pleasant! Anyway thanks just the same and congratulations for your great job.
