- Today we'll take a beginner through all the stages of using the autopilot in the Felis Boeing 747-200 Classic. We'll cover every aspect, including:
Takeoff
AutoThrust management, EPR vs Speed vs Mach
Autopilot Modes Off / Man / Command
Heading / VOR / ILS / Autoland / INS
Altitude Hold / Climb / Vertical Speed / IAS Hold / Mach Hold
Engine Settings TOD / MCT(CON) / CLB (Climb) / Cruise / GA (Go Around)
Included will be tracking VOR radials, and following the later stages of a STAR into an ILS and a full autoland to boot.

OMG - I had a copyright claim for 0.69s (yes less than 3/4 of a second) of a background tune that got caught on stream!!! I have attempted to remove the "offending" piece to hopefully limit your exposure to adverts from GREEDY COPYRIGHT FOLK
thats absolute bs, how could they do that honestly
In those days descent were performed in VS around 2500ft/mn( times your GS is a good base)(adjusted to maintain the 5% descent)never in IAS Hold, if you have trouble with the AT you can select 250kt in the corresponding window. We had to compute precisely the point of descent according to our GS and the altitude to reach. I didn't fly the 747 but I flew the DC10-30 with almost the same AP and AT.
That's very interesting stuff. I would have LOVED to have been a pilot in the days where one actually had to fly the plane (and use brain with the autopilot). All this fully automated TOGA/wheelsup/400ft hit autopilot and that's LNAV/VNAV hooked up and tray table can come out until 30seconds before touchdown 12 hours later... Not saying its a bad job, but its a shadow of what it was - like most things today. Thanks again, I think you had the best time of it!
Thank you for this tutorial on the autopilot of the Felis! Greatly appreciate it
Thank you for all the help and info - Cheers!
Very good explanations. Thank you
Nice video, thank you
love your accent. you sound like Paul McCartny, can you sing? great vid, William
Haha! I could try and sing, but I suspect it would cause some horrific malfunction within my audio setup, not to mention the police called by the neighbours, who subsequently put my door through, under the guise of "we heard someone being tortured".
Either way, I come off worse for it, not to mention I'll lose what little respect I ever had!
I have XP11, but can only play MSFS because my PC can run that at a decent framerate (and it looks 2x as good). However I am so jealous of this payware B742. I wish MSFS had a study-level classic gauge cockpit.
I know this video is a year old but did the pushback come with the plane and how to activate it? To avoid waiting for the xplane's default.
This is a fantastic video! Very informative indeed. Can you please tell me what is the name of the Flight Simulator program you were using for this, as I would really like to get this myself. Also what are the PC hardware requirements for running the program?
Many thanks,
Sharon.
Hi, sorry for late reply. This is Xplane 12 (the flight simulator) and the aircraft is Felis 747 - 200 (the "classic").
Regarding required hardware, like many things, you get what you pay for, I cannot recommend enough a stick and throttle lever and pedals (again, the more you spend... See dedicated reviews on these, or try them out if possible).
Xplane itself isn't the most demanding simulator ever - but some aircraft, like the 747 here, do add to this.
@@gameswithbrains Thank you :) The 747-200 is indeed a classic! that and it's predecessor the 747-123 (100) series (1969/1970, the one with the spiral staircase leading up to the small upper deck with only 3 windows) are my two favourites of all the iterations of the 747 aircraft.
I have flew on a few 747-200 series airplanes back in the early 1980's, but only ever once on a 123-100 series.
Regarding the information you provided me about a stick and throttle lever and pedals, I will almost certainly look into getting them, as that will enhance the experience and make it much more realistic.
I took flying lessons back in late 1991 and during 1992, and achieved my PPL at the end of 1992. Only ever flown real single engine aircraft, but obviously know and understand a great deal about piloting, and have been inside the cockpit of several commercial airliners (back in the 90's before 9/11 when you could ask the cabin crew if they could speak to the pilots and ask if if you could visit the flight deck, and they would often allow me as a passenger to enter the flight deck once we were at cruising altitude) Such fond memories of those days! :)
What adding do you use. Great video!
Thanks - just xp12 and the felis 747-200 classic.. oh and avitab / navigraph
I'm still confused under what circumstances I should change to IAS.
