Manchester united have a big following outside the uk in ireland because george best used to play for them and outside the british isles because theyre rich and famous.
Australia has a big tradition of following tournaments we're not in. Last world cup was the first time I got to cheer an Aussie side, yet I faithfully stayed up watching world cup matches at 3am - 5am supporting Sweden, Holland, Italy or Brasil or even England depending on what the circumstances were. Additionally, why would Manchester United have such a huge following outside England? Beautiful football doesn't need parochialism to be interesting and exciting.
Im assuming this is australian. Why would an australian have any interest in a football tournament (cricket, rugby and aussie rules being the big sports in australia) involving european teams only?
Doesn't change the point that one doesn't need a team from one's area in a competition to pick a team and support it.

Im not, because we didnt qualify, which is why I cant see the attracion for an australian. Anyway, how did you guess I was English
