CJ...this is an EXCELLENT video...and a SUPERB discussion of headroom and budgeting for a MacBook Pro!! This was SO helpful for me. I'm upgrading from a heavily optioned 2019 MacBook Pro Intel...and attempting to decide whether I want the 16" M3 Pro...or the 16" M3 Max. Just for headroom alone I'm seriously considering taking the plunge for the M3 Max. In any event...I really appreciate your work here. Thanks very much!

I’m hoping that heat dissipation in the 14 inch chassis has been improved to make a Max chip a reasonable choice 🤞
I upgraded to the 14in M3 Max (14 CPU, 30 GPU, 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD) from a base model 2018 Intel Macbook Pro Touch Bar. It got to the point where my fans were ramping up while just browsing the web and screen mirroring content. I am excited I did though. I always felt that macbook was holding me back performance wise. Video editing on it was slow and inefficient (crashed a lot or space issues). Its nice have a computer that doesn't cook your legs while performing basic or PRO tasks. I also used some discounts to lower the price while trading in my older macbook as well. Apple gave me $310 for the macbook, and my student discount brought the price down from $3199 to $2899. Out the door price was $2802.59
I'm waiting to see how much performance will Final cut run between the 3 chips for M3. I've been waiting to replace my old IMAC 27 2015 and wanted another IMAC but; Apple is not looking to replace it. This would be my first MAC laptop and since I do a lot of video editing with Final Cut. I like the more storage in a laptop vs my IMAC Having 1TB SSD but I have external drives and not have to travel.
The base 14" Macbook Pro also has only 2 TB4 / USB-C ports vs 3 in the mid and high-end configurations. Thanks for the configuration buying strategies!

We get less performance cores and more efficiency cores than m1 and m2. What are your thoughts on that for applications such as Final Cut Pro, logic, and other creative?

hope the touchbar comes back.. above the f keys for instance. on my 2019 16", I use the touch bar constantly, especially in logic, final cut, motion and maya (and even in WoW I've set it up for easy select of dungeon members when healing). it's perfect for my workflow instead of having to mess around with keyboard shortcuts. sure, volume control only on the touch bar is annoying, that's why it should be above the function/combo keys. there is space for it..
Hi! Loved the video! I was wondering if the difference between the binned vs not binned pro is going to be a significant downgrade? I was considering the base 16 inch for me, as I have a lot of external storage and iCloud as a solution. But the 500 price difference to the base 14 m3 pro is kind of nice… but the binned version and screen size worry me! Helppp
It’s still a very capable chip for sure. It truly depends on if you actually need the other cores for whatever you chose to use it for. But if not then it should be fine

So here is the thing. For my requirements I need a 16 GB unified memory and 1 TB SSD . The number of cores shouldn’t really matter I just want a machine for 5+ years. The 96W can be added premium. So with the specs I mentioned. I should be fine with a m2 pro or even M1 Pro. But that color is tempting. So now the question is should I get the 11 core one and upgrade to my requirements or should I just get the unbinned version of m3 pro? The difference in price for the upgraded binned version and the unbinned 12c is freaking $180 😢

would you take:
- New 16' M3 Pro 12 -CPU 18-GPU 36GB 1TB or
- Refurb 16' M2 Max 12‑CPU 38-GPU 32GB 1TB? (from Apple Refurb)
Both are going for around the same price point.
Task will mainly revolve around heavy Chrome usage (30 tabs, which will be consistency live) which has killed of my MBP 16 8GB
lol those chrome tabs get serious…😂 trust me I know. I mean either one will be a big improvement from what you have and what you’re doing. The biggest difference between the two is amount of headroom for doing larger task in the future. Honestly just file your gut on this one

Great work, CJ. I am looking hard at the M3 Max 14-core CPU 30-core GPU with 36 GB and 1 TB SSD. It will run me about $5300 Canadian dollars after tax. That's about what I paid 12 years ago for a 8 GB (upgraded from 4 GB) matte 2011 MBP 17-inch with Intel CPU lol and it didn't even have the SSD (750 GB HD). I still have it!

Currently my 2017, MacBook Pro is broken (flexgate) For me it's very important that the Macbook last very long. I use it only for web browsing, office programs, and to make charts and cards for my buisness for me its 500€ gap should i invest that?

The basic $1600 14inch M3 with 8gb and 500gb would do you well. Like he says the base model is for the everyday casual user.

Hey CJ , I'm basically going to buy my first macbook and i'm a computer science bachelors student , and right now i'm confused between Macbook air M2 15 inch and Macbook pro M3 . What do you suggest , what should i go with ?
IMHO For typical dev workloads, an Air would be more than enough. If you have an interest in machine learning as a focus (perhaps a data science specialty), a pro could make sense as those cores can be leveraged for LLMs and AI model development .
Honestly I would try get a m2 pro refurbished if you want to save money as your a uni student

CJ! I got it! I am typing on a M3 Max 16-core CPU 40-core GPU 64 GB with the 1 TB drive Space Black. I feel like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron James combined when I use this beast.
You said you would never get 1TB storage but didn’t say what storage you would get, what would you get?
2TB minimum for me personally. But A LOT of people can make 1TB work it's just not for me.

I honestly think that going with the highest spec in all areas like setting that bar all the way up memory storage RAM all that it's future proof it's worth it to spend that $7to8,000 for peace of mind and resell value or trading

It makes no sense because on pro your will get slower Ram. Bandwidth og 300Gb/s. While max has 400GB/S ( LIKE M2PRO)
No, you get 150 GB/s on Pro and 300 GB/s on Max (binned) and 400 GB/s on non binned
