There is nothing negative here, Phil. You are performing a public service. At this price level, everything should be perfect. I opted for the 2 CD set and the basic vinyl version. No problems with either. Hopefully, you can get this sorted.
Wow, that is horrible. I think I am happy with my deluxe CD from a few years back. That really sucks about the box set. I hope this video makes others more aware. Speaking of box sets, my CD deluxe box set of the Beatles Let It Be had the book printed upside down after you opened the cover...
Excellent video! Nothing wrong with highlighting issues, you’re providing a public service to music lovers IMO. Mistakes like this are just not acceptable especially at a price level like this.
Phil. Absolutely agree with you. You would think , there would be some “so called Professional proof checkers “ on something so expensive. Your dead on. Unbelievable. Thanks for a tremendous review 👍💯
Hi Phil Sorry to hear about the problems with the book, totally unacceptable for such a deluxe item. Fortunately, for me, the book pages are all present and correct. I hope you will soon be able to source a replacement and begin to enjoy the wonderful music inside.
Hi Phil. Thanks for the 'heads-up' video on the main book in this set. I had not opened my box up yet. I opened mine up and took at look at my book to find all the pages are there in the correct order with no repeats. Whew! Now, being that I am in the U.S.A. it could be that my book was bound in a different factory than was yours....or maybe not. But where there is one bad copy there sure to be more so it was a very good idea to post the video. Hope you'll be able to get a good copy without any hassle. Keep it up with the great videos!
Thanks for the heads up Phil. I had to rush downstairs and check my copy but all appears to be fine. Thank goodness. What a pain for you and potentially others though to have to return for a new copy. Poor quality control going on there. Good luck with that and thanks for all you do. Love the channel and have learnt so much already. Keep it coming! Take care dude. Cheers, Jon.
For the price that's a total disgrace! I would urge everybody to check their copies. It might merit a total product-recall. I love this album, and just got the 2 CD reissue which is a nice mix.
I'm so sorry to hear of your problems Phil! You're quite right, it's unacceptable! I bought this and my copy, fortunately, is fine. I hope that you manage to get it sorted out. A lovely chap, such as yourself, shouldn't have to ensure this. I'm also very pleased to see that you're still here - given the weather that the South coast has had just recently! My own view of the boxed set, is that it's utterly superb! One of my favourite Who albums. A fascinating listen. But I will refrain from too much adulation, as that would seem like running salt into your wounds. 'All the very best from me!
Phil, feel your pain, man. I'm one of the people in this world who DO shell out big bucks for CD box sets in a world that has, in a cruel way, folded back on itself and returned to vinyl and left people like us in a capitalistic netherworld. I refuse to give up on CDs because I've spent WAY too much money on the digital platform that overtook the planet back when I was in my middle 20's (?). I was an avid album collector and was violently upended by the CD revolution. But I played along and today my rather extensive collection is 85% CD. I own many box sets which I find fills that hole left by the disappearance of the hands-on experience and joy of album collecting. I will also, if backed in a corner, viciously defend the quality of contemporary CD listening. I don't question the (when measured by individuals with a nuanced pair of ears only equaled by our canine brothers and sisters) quality of vinyl over CD. I only question the lying SOBs who denounce CDs as having"terrible sound" and challenge them to truly find any difference in recent CD releases over their vinyl counterparts. I would love someone to have a turntable with an album playing (connected to nothing) and hide the actual music playing (a CD player) and proceed to engage them in a "doesn't this album sound SOOOO much better than an OLD CD" conversation and then watch as their expressions dropped to the floor after being told that, in fact, they're listening to a CD. I promise you the number of people who couldn't tell the damn difference would be amazing ! So in that spirit, Phil I'm with you that if i spend my hard earned buck on a box set, it damn well better be TOP NOTCH and not HALF-ASSED! My condolences, my man.
Phil it's a binding error in which they haven't put the printed sections in the correct order in the binder machine. It could have been a "set up" copy where the bindery set up the machine to get the dimensions correct. I doubt if there are any other copies like this, if there are there will be people sacked and the binder sued. At the very least the binder will be paying a hefty price in compensation for this to the customer. If you contact the record company or store you should be very politely offered a replacement with apologies. ALL the best.
Thank you for your detailed response, that is very interesting and based on the comments it does not seem a common issue so far. If it is an isolated incident, what were the odds of it been sent to a bloke with a UA-cam channel!
You Seems right, it's unacceptable - Phil. Phil, thank you for your wonderful channel and physical promotion. You do it with dignity and professional knowledge. I am a new subscriber. I live in Poland, vinyls are expensive here and records are not as easy to buy as before. I rarely buy vinyl, and my habits haven't changed that much. I still listen to albums in their entirety, and I use YT or Spotify only to get acquainted with the musical material. I still love discovering albums, only knowing the singles, but sometimes I'm tempted to listen to something in its entirety... every single release. I buy CDs and have good equipment to play them. I listen to a lot of metal, so a pleasant listening session depends on the master of the album. This one should be special, especially in terms of vinyl, which is rare in contemporary music. By the way, I recommend you my latest musical discovery - the album "The Spell" by Cellar Darling. This is a beautiful conceptual album that requires the listener's involvement. Beautiful arrangements, a touching story told in the beautiful voice of Anna Murphy. Metal in a feminine way, but with a big heart. Check it out. The band released this album beautifully and deserves more popularity. I'm not exaggerating. The album isn't much of a novelty, but they've only released one single since then. This album is a transcendental experience, and in metal there hasn't been a singer for a long time who could paint with a voice as beautiful as the combination of Bjork and Tori Amos with a pinch of Myrkur. I also like the new Rolling Stones album and Halloween's Duran Duran (great edition, even on CD). Phil, I'm sorry that I'm writing to you in the reply box, but YT deletes my comments or makes them invisible. I luv this video, by the way. This commentary is, mostly, about Your recently movie about vinyl and CD sales and future.
Thanks for pointing this out Phil. Luckily for me, my copy is okay. It has to be said that the record company hasn't exactly handled this release well at all. After taking sales at the original price of £285 they subsequently dropped the price by £60 prior to release but didn't tell anyone or offer refunds. I found out about this before release and requested a refund of the difference, as the change was prior to release, but my pleas were ignored. However, I was able to cancel my order and re-order at the lower price. Another issue I've heard about is a packing error on the vinyl copies. In some instances, those who have purchased the half speed re-master have received the standard version in the half-speed sleeve and others who have purchased the "standard" master have received the half speed in the standard sleeve. Fortunately the half speed version is clearly identified in the dead wax so it's easy to tell which version you have. A bit of a shambles!
Thanks for your video . This is the worst overall quality control I've ever seen in a major extremely expensive release. Some have even complained about missing discs . My set had indentations on the photo and both tour books in the memorabilia packet. With the errors in your book and others , error- free replacements should be offered by a recall for all the problems, but I'm not holding my breath. I hope you get your issue resolved, because it is much more serious than mine. Please let us know the outcome. pl
hi phil thanks for this video i wasn't aware of this problem so i checked my box set book and luckily my book has all the pages inside no missing pages.
Although I am not able to afford this expensive (to me) item I support you all the way Phil. You are one of my favorite reviewers with admirable knowledge on popular music. Love your podcast ...
Hi Phil. Sorry to hear about this. My book appears to be fine. I have been reading it so I hadn't noticed any problems. As soon as I saw your video, of course, I went back to my book and again all my pages are there. No issues. There certainly are odd problems with these box sets
Good morning Phil from N.H. U.S.A. The Who is another of my favorite bands, and this is quite the faux pas !!! I looked on Amazon here and did a double take at the price $290 dollars U.S. ! Also checked out the reviews, most bad reviews are about damaged memorabilia, maybe some have yet to carefully comb through the book, as you have. I have the Who 30 Year of Maximum R&B box set, and will pass on this one for now. Thanks so much for you review, and all the best to you and yours.
I just checked mine, I live in Texas, and mine is fine, but I’ve certainly had my share of defects with box sets over the years. As one example when I got the Sgt Pepper box my first copy didn’t include the discs. The entire cardboard sleeve holding them was absent. It’s frustrating and I hope you get yours replaced soon. I also got the slip of paper noting the error on one page but I double checked and my book is complete and in order. Love your channel!
After buying Revolver and returning it twice before settling with the same vinyl flaws I decided against buying anything made on the cheap in the Czech Republic. This included Tom Petty Fillmore box and The who sadly. They are charging top dollar prices for records done on the cheap. Much as I love the Who, I won't be getting fooled again! Ugh!
Holy smokes governor….250 pounds !! That’s $375 + Canadian for that !! Wow that’s insane. I already own the OG press bought when new and a later MoFi Half Speed master from the 80’s so no way at all would I be spending money like that on one artists box set. I know each to their own and buy what makes u happy but £250 !!
Seriously? That is outrageous. You would think that for such a hefty price tag all would be hunky dory and more. Heads should roll for such an egregious error. Particularly for a band of high stature like the Who. I would imagine that some sort of restitution is in order? I’m glad that I am priced out of this box set. I bought the set off of iTunes at a much more reasonable price. I also have a hi-res copy of the Wilson remix which sounds phenomenal. Too bad they messed up this important release. I have the Sell Out box set which is how it should be done. That is a good box set.
My copy is totally fine. But thanks for making me check. Long gone are the days when I have the time to peruse all the print materials that are included upon receiving such a box set (which I received many weeks ago on the day of its release).
Hold your horses there Phil , you could potentially have a collectors idea on your shelves if this is the only dodgy copy , it’s worth considering at least !
Deeply depressing state of affairs. I have been toying with this one for a while, but I'd want some reassurance that I'm getting a perfect one. This is very unlikely to be an isolated problem, unfortunately.
Thanks Phil for the heads up video I have checked my copy and it looks perfect so you could just have been unlucky and had a rogue copy hope you get it sorted soon
When I bought the box set version of The Kinks album Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround I noticed that it had two discs of the double CD version in it which meant that I was missing two discs that should be part of the box set. The tracklisting did not match the contents of the two discs and the two discs that were missing obviously had music that I couldn't listen to. It took two months before the issue was finally resolved.
Hi Phil, Sorry to hear about the misprint. That is totally unacceptable regardless of the price. My copy is ok. However, I remember on your unboxing of Jethro Tull's Broadsword and the Beast cd boxed set, I could see that you got a beer mat which is not in mine! I have looked everywhere but couldn't find it being mentioned. I was wondering if it was exclusive to the UK edition as I purchased mine through Amazon Australia.
Hey Phil, I'm really sorry that this happened to you. I've had this for about 2 months or so. I've read both the Comic and the Book. Mine were fine. So it's not on the whole production. Maybe they can send you a replacement for a faulty unit.
I just checked my copy and it has the pages from 1-100 in order, although the buttons did punch a small hole in the photograph. I can live with that though. Thanks for the heads up.
Fortunately, my set was fine. Someone over on SHF reported a similar issue with their book on release day, which prompted me to check my books too when my copy arrived on release day. The buttons put small indentations on my photo too but didn't get punctured. I'm storing the buttons outside the box because of it, though.
I would love to buy this, but I have heard about other issues, like the Badges as mentioned in this review, so I might pass on this sadly. I bought The Who - Sell Out Box a few years ago, without any quality control Issues.
Oh .. Phil .. sorry to here about your set …yes I have heard about the books.. from missing pages… upside down… and out of sequence.. as well as the photo being puncture… There’s plenty to read over at the Steve Hoffman site…that ranges from audio dropouts on the cd to a right bashing to the SF show mix .. I’m lucky as my set is faultless and over all it’s an amazing set ..for me it is the missing piece into beginning to understand what Townsend was about and was trying to say musically and lyrically.. So please .. get it sent back.. get a replacement and please don’t let it mar your enjoyment… Your are right of course.. box sets like this don’t come easily into our life’s .. a lot of saving and sacrifices of other things goes into obtaining then and the enjoyment can be tainted with these kind of issues.. and it’s far to common in my opinion.. Keep well and keep your focus on the good 👍
No problems with my box set. I checked both books just in case! Fyi I noticed that the 2cd set, on disc two, some of the tracks has not the same play time as the box set. Don't know why....
Hi Phil; I'm living in Canada. I did get this box set as soon as it came out and fortunately I did not have this problem with mine. All pages are there and in the correct order, and it did come with a small note regarding page 75. Sorry to hear about your frustration. How to know now which one will be ok and which one is not !!
That’s a shame . I used outtakes , bootlegs and bonus material to create my own LifeHouse cd back in the day. I would’ve bought this. Will see if it’s corrected.
Thanks so much for the info Phil! I have been fretting over whether I should buy this package for some time and I did read somewhere earlier that someone had a copy like the one you have described. I do find it very concerning within the context of this product that such a lousy presentation error should occur inside something of such expense. I would expect to pay £230 for this item and receive something pristine and glitch-free! VERY SHODDY I must say. Ha! You wouldn't get this from Jethro Tull, would you? I am waiting for a replacement operation from the manufacturers on the scale of the Neil Young 50th anniversary of his Harvest album in which there was a faulty DVD which you could have replaced by the company itself. It took a while but the DVD from my package was replaced when requested. Still, a big disappointment for Who fans, or, like me, fans of the album itself.😂
I bought mine from HMV. I haven’t opened mine yet. I’m going to check with them first that if I open it and find an issue, that they’ll exchange or refund. Thanks for the heads up though, and hope you get your copy exchanged.
I'm in the states and got mine from Amazon. My book is ok but the pins damaged too much of the memorabilia items. Ended up getting a second set to combine items to get one good set and sent the other one back. I did not check the book in the second set though.
Onya Phil. At 250 quid I’d be rightly pissed as well! If you convert that to Oz dollars, I’d also be asking for compensation from the manufacturers due to abuse from my wife! Just goes to show that you can pay a premium but we are still victims of marketing. Thanks for sharing, I will stick to my original. 5:06
Thanks Phil ... not good, very sloppy ... not the first, not the last box set with quality control issues (Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks set had a page missing ... Sony thaought that giving you a free pdf of the missing page would make you happy! Not acceptable ... so still not bought a copy of this set. Also, I believe, some issues with a track on the Self Portait box ... and was there a wrong track on the BluRay of Elton John's Madman Across the Water set that meant folk needed to get a replacement disc?) Companies really do need to get things right 1st time re expensive box sets ... there are plenty of fans who would be more than happy to test out products before release. Thanks again for video ... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland ... p.s. related topic (sort of) and I'd like to get companies to replace my bronzed CDs ... PDO did that for a while for CDs made between 1988 to 1992 that had a faulty manufacturing process (e.g. Polydor, Deutsche Grammophone, Windsong releases) then they stopped providing the replacement service ... not happy that I have discs that can only be used as frisbees in my collection ....
Hi Phil, So sorry your book is faulty. I've just checked mine, which is pristine. Hopefully, you'll be sent a new copy, which will be perfect! But this is so annoying when such things happen!
Looks like a problem in binding at the printer, they have put 2 of the same signatures in, and left one out. The manufacturer should replace the book for you. It does have more often than you think with printed books but hopefully shouldn't affect to many copies on the print run
Not all that glitters is not always gold, that's a lot off money. I think maybe I'm still liveing in the 70 ts when it comes to money. As you hnow had to sell records, hard times, but have big collection of C.Ds now. No way I word start collecting records as it's too much money for me. But some C.D.s have gone up if there not the run of the meal and some look like your getting more but sometimes older copy with less ,Is the best copy. Some in this music trade are riding the gravy train. Hi fi speakers , hi fi units plus all that gos with it. Soon you will feel like a king for owning music and something to pay it on or you have to be a king to buy. We need the young to be able to buy to keep springing alive.
Quality problem I encountered is with Abbey Road half speed remaster of WN. Record pressed in Czech Republic it was badly warped and I got a refund. Experienced other similar problems with vinyls pressed in CR (no criticism of CR) whoever sub contracted this work to CR needs to sort this out. Rhino?
It's a real shame, Phil, and I can tell you feel ripped off over it - at least you can send it back and get your money back and the record company must correct this. It's not something I would buy at that price anyway (I am saving my pennies for the incoming Camel box set) but good that you have warned others here.
Hi Gary, it is looking like this is a very rare issue, the video is getting lots of views and no one else has mentioned yet. This gives me confidence to return this and get another copy. Phil
Jeez I thought I'd never seen Phil get frustrated before but this is a first. Folks record this moment, we have a negative review from the very calm Phil! But carnival barker aside, there should be QC over something as prestigious like this. Absolutely pathetic.
If the record label have a semblance of integrity, they will, without a moment’s hesitation, send a replacement book - without the need to return the flawed original.
There is nothing negative here, Phil. You are performing a public service. At this price level, everything should be perfect. I opted for the 2 CD set and the basic vinyl version. No problems with either. Hopefully, you can get this sorted.
agreed, it is best to bring this issue to the public. i would think they should provide u with a new copy
Too expensive, too😢
"There's no page seventy-one"
Sounds like a good title for a song!
Crazy! they should recall the lot
Mistakes like this are just not acceptable especially at a price level like this.
mine is correct. pages are in order
That's crazy Phil for £230 you would expect every attention to detail is lovingly and expertly checked well spotted

I need to check my copy. I also purchased the Super deluxe edition as well. Thank you for sharing this vital information.
Thanks for the heads up Phil. I had to rush downstairs and check my copy but all appears to be fine. Thank goodness. What a pain for you and potentially others though to have to return for a new copy. Poor quality control going on there. Good luck with that and thanks for all you do. Hi. Was alarmed when I saw your video. Happy to say my copy of the book is normal. Hopefully you got a replacement. Cheers!
For the price that's a total disgrace! I would urge everybody to check their copies. It might merit a total product-recall. I love this album, and just got the 2 CD reissue which is a nice mix.
Glad I stuck with me 1971 track pressing. Old fashion quality
Thanks for the warning Phil
Thanks for the tip off Phil. Not worth the risk at that price now.

Hi Phil,my book seems to be ok,but thanks for the heads up....
Merci pour l'information Phil !
bought it from Amazon UK... checked now. nothing wrong with mine. Good luck
Simply wow apart from the book flaw. You are right to complain. As I can't afford the box I will stay with my old vinyl copy....
Thanks for highlighting this cock up. I have not bought this yet, but its on my list, I will check mine upon purchase. Really useful post.
Deeply depressing state of affairs. I have been toying with this one for a while, but I'd want some reassurance that I'm getting a perfect one. This is very unlikely to be an isolated problem, unfortunately.
Hope it gets sorted out Phil but more concerned about how you managed with Storm Ciaran You doing ok?
Hi Roland, the storm was very wild. Apart from the satellite dish being ripped off the side of the house we got away lightly!
The beer mat was unique to orders from Burning Shed in the UK. I did not realise this at the time of doing the video. Thank you 😊
Shame to hear about this issue - it comes across as less than poor shipping or construction, but a lack of care for us as consumers and music fans.
Hey Phil,
I'm really sorry that this happened to you.
It's too bad this has occurred. A big failure of quality control. Hopefully this issue will be rectified for future printings.
I would love to buy this, but I have heard about other issues, like the Badges as mentioned in this review, so I might pass on this sadly. I bought The Who - Sell Out Box a few years ago, without any quality control Issues.
You can get it for around £125 which I would say is well worth it
Oh .. Phil .. sorry to here about your set …yes I have heard about the books.. from missing pages… upside down… and out of sequence.. as well as the photo being puncture…
There’s plenty to read over at the Steve Hoffman site…that ranges from audio dropouts on the cd to a right bashing to the SF show mix ..
I’m lucky as my set is faultless and over all it’s an amazing set ..for me it is the missing piece into beginning to understand what Townsend was about and was trying to say musically and lyrically..
So please .. get it sent back.. get a replacement and please don’t let it mar your enjoyment…
Your are right of course.. box sets like this don’t come easily into our life’s .. a lot of saving and sacrifices of other things goes into obtaining then and the enjoyment can be tainted with these kind of issues.. and it’s far to common in my opinion..
Keep well and keep your focus on the good 👍
Amazing !!!!!
No problems with my box set. I checked both books just in case! Fyi I noticed that the 2cd set, on disc two, some of the tracks has not the same play time as the box set. Don't know why....
Sorry to hear about your book Phil mine is good
Hi Phil; I'm living in Canada.
Luckily, the book and mine is perfect.
My set was missing the buttons though not happy about that.
But at least everything else is fine.
Still, a big disappointment for Who fans, or, like me, fans of the album itself.😂
hi Phil. looks like a proper cowboy job, did it come from texas?
I bought mine from HMV. I haven’t opened mine yet. I’m going to check with them first that if I open it and find an issue, that they’ll exchange or refund.
Thanks for the heads up though, and hope you get your copy exchanged.
That’s totally unacceptable.
I remember someone on UA-cam getting the book with The deluxe Let It Be set printed back to front and upside down. It happens.
This is all completely in accordance with the coke and cognac infused recording sessions of half a century ago.
Really shoddy quality control
Hi Phil,
So sorry your book is faulty.
Phil have you got a resolution for the book yet??
Yes - Universal sent me out a new book - I will do a full review next week . Phi
Rare factory error, could be worth alot more one day.😮
The best the who.... Vinil all time 👍
Wonderfull vinil Box...😎
Quality problem I encountered is with Abbey Road half speed remaster of WN. Record pressed in Czech Republic it was badly warped and I got a refund. Experienced other similar problems with vinyls pressed in CR (no criticism of CR) whoever sub contracted this work to CR needs to sort this out. Rhino?
This ones for the 2+2=5 crowd.
It's a real shame, Phil, and I can tell you feel ripped off over it - at least you can send it back and get your money back and the record company must correct this.
It's not something I would buy at that price anyway (I am saving my pennies for the incoming Camel box set) but good that you have warned others here.
Was Phil the only one to find this fault or has anyone else found this? Real shame - I was so looking forward to getting this.
My goodness. Yes. That is a pretty big blunder. Worst I’ve seen yet.
Maybe yours is a super rare f*cked up edition?
Never seen something like that before.. This must be very embarrising for Pete T. (Some Heads Are Gonna Roll)
I hope my book isn't like that I'm in Canada and paid close to $500!
Well spotted Phil. That’s very very poor indeed.
Could it be worth more? Or are all books like this?
For a box set that comes at the price of a car payment, this is a most unfortunate result. Any idea how pervasive the problem is?
It’s very rare, I will be filming an update soon
I'd send it back and demand a refund.
£230 you're off ya head 😳
Go buy an og UK pressing on the track label and with the leftover money have a nice dinner
