As far as I recall, the warp field coils inside the nacelles are the reason for differing cruising/top speed. The nacelles are field generators, and changing the geometry of the field can affect top speed, cruising speed, and how long you can maintain either. Nacelles aren’t power sources, just field generators/field guides. The warp core is the power source.

Their shape, distancing and composition coupled with the volume and timing of the injection of highly energetic plasma produced by the matter-anti-mater reaction in the core is what determines the warp field geometry, and within the structural limits of the ship, top speed and duration thereof as well as max sustained speed and other warp operational characteristics.

It was a component of the warp drive that turned the Antimatter fuel source into usable warp plasma that could then be pumped into the warp nacelles. So, I love how you went about doing this comparative analysis, but the warp nacelles weren't using dilithium as a fuel source. The dilithium crystals were actually a focusing component for the warp engine, but they were turning the reaction of matter and anti-matter into usable power which would then either be sent to the EPS conduits to power weapons, engines, etc OR to the warp field generators of the nacelles. There is, of course, wear and tear that would happen to that crystal due to the power being sent to the nacelles, but it was due to the drain of the power and the strain that the system was taking. Typically, the 4 engine designs were meant to be used as an extender for the warp coils of the nacelles, as you would use two of the nacelles (top or bottom) to move the ship, while the other two were maintained or else allowed to be in "rest" mode and then brought online to relieve the other. This (from what I could tell) would allow the ship to maintain it's higher cruising speed and go for longer before needing to slow down and do general maintenance. This would allow it to go longer and further without needing to return to spacedock for repairs and the replacement of warp coils, housings, etc.
Purpose of the ship also affects the speed. Equinox wasn't really built for anything needing high speed, so dialing down its warp speed probably was a design choice to reduce wear on the nacelles and drain on fuel. Like building a family car and taking an already existing sports car engine with the desired specs, tuning it down, and dropping it in.
I need to convert some things so everyone who reads the comments in the future isn’t left a little confused by application of names and terminologies. Right idea though but hear me out; -Warp core is the engine -Warp nacelles are the transmission gear ratios & axle ratios -Fuel for the engine is Dilithium The math isn’t how powerful the nacelle are. The math is how much power the engine can put out and how durable the gears are at cruise and peak performance. The axle gear ratios are how much both the engine and transmission can push based on different engine power ratings and transmission gearing. A big @ss ship with TOS warp core and nacelles needs a higher axle ratio just to move it and the gear ratios are spread to optimal points so that the transmission can handle converting power from a less than ideal displacement engine. For those of you mechanically inclined; picture an old early 90s Toyota pickup with the 4 banger, a 5 speed manual transmission and 4.60 rear gears…towing a Winnebago. It’ll do it but only up to a certain speed before the engine is crying for a break or the transmission is begging you to downshift just to make it up a minor incline…at 55mph max

They do not generate power but use it. Therefore, more of them requires more power and, in reality, would slow you down, but perhaps give you more efficiency. The way that a trawler has great range at slow speeds as opposed to b planing hull of a similar size. There is often a lot of talk about how bigger ships generate more power - but the Defiant throws all of that out the window. Thus a bigger ship isn't neessarily more powerful than a smaller one. it's more about the warp geometry and the size of the coils needed to maintain the field.

Some lack the ability to handle that much power and/or are not structural sound enough. Dump that much plasma in and the coils will melt/warp/disintegrate under the heat/stress.

The nacelles are just the emitters/generators for the ship's warp field. the nacelles control the way which the warp field is generated and is used to direct the way the warp field interacts with the surrounding space. The actual warp drive/warp core is within the starship's hull. The look of your warp nacelles doesn't affect the performance of the ship's warp drive. Although the nacelles look alike, the Miranda-class does not have the same warp drive as a Constitution-refit, nor does these two ships have the same warp core as the Constellation-class (Stargazer). You do not drain your Dilithium, you drain your Deuterium and anti-matter fuel. Dilithium is used to direct the energy that is produced by the warp core. The energy is diverted either to the intermix chamber and focused towards the nacelles and/or towards the ships power generators. The power generators use this energy to power all of its onboard systems and weapons.

The slower speed of the Equinox is easy to explain the Equinox is a much smaller vessel than Voyage or it's a smaller vessel than most Federation vessels it was a replacement for the oberth class which oberth is a very weak vessel and isn't very powerful in its own right but the equinoxes basically is the same thing it's a weaker vessel with not much power it's not capable Our Generation on the same scale as the larger Federation vessels it's warp core is extremely small it's warp core is smaller than the defiant class starship and the defiant class starship is not that much larger or smaller than the Equinox so the reason for the lower the warp speed is available power generation if you can't generate the same amount of power to the warp field and the warp in the cells you can't go at higher work velocities

Dilithium isn't a fuel, not even by analogy. The fuel in federation ships is anti-matter. Dilithium is more like the spark plug or combustion chamber.
