Hiking Through a Beautiful Forest to Explore a Nasty Hell Hole

- Hi all - sorry for my long hiatus. It’s been a busy summer as usual. I promise there is a lot of good stuff to come. We’re actively working on some new ‘project’ mines that will hopefully turn up some interesting stuff.
This mine is located deep in the forested wilderness of the Washington Cascade mountains. It’s about a six-mile hike to reach the mine. I found it ironic how beautiful this area is, especially in comparison to the nasty flooded abandoned mine that I explored. This mine was basically a prospect. The long crosscut adit was intended for use as a lower haulage for an ore body that would have been worked higher up on the mountain. The ore body was brecciated material with an abundance of pyrite minerals present. As you may have noticed in other mine exploring videos, the ribs and back of an adit are generally covered in blasting dust/dirt. You’ll see in this video, that all of the minerals exposed by the adit are totally visible. Apparently, the adit was pressure washed by the last folks to work the mine. All of the blasting dust was washed away.
Another interesting feature of this mine relates to geothermal activity in the area. There are hot springs near this mine, and unsurprisingly, parts of the mine were uncomfortably hot. Like 90 degrees hot. Not something I’ve ever encountered before.

beautiful sulfides of Chalcopyrite and bornite....would take samples there for free mill Gold in the oxidation zones....looks like the host is granodiorite .... nice inclusions in the silica stringers ....nice looking cooper sulfate staining and flow stone ... too bad they never reached the brecciated zone ....must be heavily mineralized to drive a cross cut to it ....fun explore...keep'em coming

That was a beautiful hike my friend, outstanding atmosphere!
Even after all this time, I still marvel at how much nature & time is slowly successfully swallowing over these adits/openings. How fortunate we are to find & walk these industrial tombs. In another 50-100 years, a lot of these "crawls" to get into the adits, will be long closed over. Lost forever, practically impossible to locate. We're living in a very unique window of time. Much gratitude.

There are (broken) pipes there, so I would guess water supply for something, possibly the mine.
It was an attempt to pipe water from one of the hot springs in the area!

I think the decomposition of the timbersets and buildup of gasses might have an effect on the temperature. Weird feeling, like being in a greenhouse

I loved the intro with just the sights and sounds of nature. It really draws you in to the area you were exploring in. That large mine adit had some interesting features. With all that pyrite, quartz, iron staining, etc. it would seem like a good spot for something. Surprised it only ended up as a prospect.

About your O2 meter: electrochemical sensors don‘t have the fastest reaction time to changing environmental parameters.
My Draeger didn’t give a stable reading but started beeping as soon as I hit a wiff of bad air. A few moments later the reading came up low.
Perhaps yours detects a rapid fall in O2 concentrations too and sounds an alarm. I‘d want to ask my sales rep about that.

Thank you for this *wonderful* video. I am interested in the geology, but I don't know much. Perhaps other posters can help me: What do you think the bedrock is, a diorite, a granite, something else? Do you think the vein @21:27 is quartz or calcite? You mentioned the heat...did you smell sulfur, is that the yellow we see? I agree with others here that the reddishness is possibly cinnabar as it can be found with pyrite in hydrothermal deposits. Thanks in advance anyone that would like to help me.
