Beach Fishing Trip: Hardback Crabs

  • Beach FishingEvery fisherman wants to know the best fishing bait, and one of the best for shore anglers is the simple hardback shore crab. Graeme takes a trip down to the beach to show the rig and also lives in the hope of a single fish. The weather is great, but bright conditions are never the best for shallow water shore fishing. Then he takes a look back at one of the early days when everyone was allowed out after the lockdown. It gives a relaxing insight into how we all love to get out in fresh air, and how being by water takes away much of the modern day stress...just sit back and relax.....GP has the shots and music to chill out to.

That last bit nearly brought me to tears. I sat in the car today with a load on for the tip. The queue was an hour long. It gave me time to reflect and I thought to myself "It's strange what brings about changes". Something microscopic which can't be seen has knocked us all for six. Made us wait in queues and wear masks everywhere. This will no doubts go down in history, like the battle of hastings, the fire of London and the plague and people in hundreds of years will say "My Grandad was alive during Covid 19 but that will be right after they say "Graeme Pullen was the most amazing Angler out". Keep up the good work Graeme. You've kept a smile on our faces. Thankyou.

Loved seeing you prepare that crab Graeme. I've used crabs to fish once before and I was quite confused that we were peeling the shells (fresh peelers) and making a nice little juicy bait. It did get one hound, but I feel like the fish are going to be more likely to eat a crab that looks like a crab, rather than one thats been completely taken apart. The next time I fish with crab I'm going to use this method, especially with the spike to keep it in place.

I must admit, I had it very lucky during covid, living rural and very close to Chesil beach. I was able to go down to the fleet with my rubber dinghy I bought from the gift shop, row over to chesil and have the entire beach to myself, just me and my dog. I caught so many fish it was unreal, and Ozzy had a nice catch and cook on the beach, fresh mackerel cooked on beach driftwood fire, it was the perfect escape from the madness and not a single soul in sight so no risk posed to anyone... Fishing was an amazing relief from it all!

Just a small but successful tip for supporting rod butts in shingle: Take a strong-ish shopping bag or two, fill with shingle and prop against the butts. Easy to transport empty, and quick to "assemble". I use the same principle to anchor fishing umbrellas in windy conditions. Then tie the brolly top to more bag handles on a long piece of cord.

Graeme - many thanks. I always like to take the road less traveled: even if there are multiple reasons why a particular road may be less traveled: don't care; if I can see any kind of logic, or reason to follow through with my ideas, I'm going that way. So, catch a bass, catch a cod, catch a conga, catch a whole load of just plain every day fish: open them up, full of sand eels, full of mackerel bits wrapped in bait-elastic (I once caught a codling with 3, or 4 inches of bait elastic coming out of its ass, no hook inside, just that), and shrimps and prawns, they'll be in there. But if I was asked to put money on what would be found in the gut of any shore caught fish, it's gonna be hardback shore crabs every time. Crammed with them, fish love them, and they're available all year round, and fish just love them! So why should it be that hard back crabs, and that other readily available dietary staple of many fish, the common limpet, be so hard to fish as bait? I for sure don't know the answer, but maybe one reason is that nobody tries it anymore, as it's easier to buy fresh, or readymade baits at local angling suppliers and just whack it out there as far as you can, and keep it all nice and tidy, and wrapped up in newspaper, and..... Well, this might sound like a rant so I'll shut up, as I do all the above mentioned at times, but I do find the idea of using what you'd think would be obvious, and readily available baits, a challenge to take up, rather than just overlook. Well that's me. Good luck. Raymondo.

Crabs and limpets: fish eat them, fishermen don't use them, when I take the road less traveled (my internal sat-nav directs me that way) and use them, fish don't eat them. I did, however, once catch a codling that took a crab than was nibbling my Lugworm and got hooked. Would I have caught it with just the crab? Who knows. I'll try crabs and limpets again though, I like old school fishing techniques. R.
