ma lin hates this video.
While age may be a factor, I don't think it's the deciding factor in this match. It does look like Ma Lin was playing bad but only because Kenta was controlling the pace of the match the entire time, not letting Ma Lin play to his strengths. Kenta's blocking is just genius.
true, but this is old old ma Lin we're talking about who relied heavily on his foot speed and ball placement.
Kenta completely outplayed him, I get it, but ma lin was done by that time.

Matsudaira plays smart, with great feeling, totally in control, reading every shot perfectly and it's still spectacular. My new favorite!

Kenta Matsudaira played really excellent
Kenta hits the ball fast of the bounce with very uncomfortable placement. He's also one of the few players that still uses the drop shot to great effect. I think this and the fact that he has great fighting spirit is why he won here not necessarily Ma-lin's advanced age.

Matsudaira had a good run, beating good players (e.g. Ma Lin, Samsonov) on his way to the quarterfinal, and almost made it to the semi but lost to Xu Xin in a tight 6-game match, who moved on to all-Chinese semifinal. (Other top names didn't get this far either, Tim Boll, Ovtcharov, etc.) It was a great tournement.

Steven Siegler ... I'd agree with you but if you look at the end of the 2009 match handshake when Lin barely wins he doesn't recognize Kentas effort and his expression doesn't pay any respect to how close it was. Kenta pays him back here.

Here's my analysis :
Kenta look at the position of the body of ma lin before playing any shot. If Ma Lin stand in the position that his left side of his waist is within the table width (i.e. there is space in the backhand side), then Kenta will play to Ma Lin backhand. Otherwise he'll play to his forehand.

Gentlemen, in case you haven't heard the news yet, this will very likely be the last game of Ma Lin's career on the international stage.
Matudaira literally "humored" Ma Lin in this game, and it's not by luck or accident. He lost a very close game against him several years ago in another Worlds by a score of 3-4, with the final game 9-11. He said he was looking for a revenge for all these years, and what do you know? He finally got his chance. I personally think Ma Lin in even his prime could have reversed the result because Matsudaira has got Ma Lin's tactics and weaknesses completely figured out. Simply phenomenal!!!

Is that so? If he indeed said it five years ago, that was eerily prophetic of himself because that's exactly what happened. Anyways, quite a few partisan people try to make you believe that it's purely Ma Lin's age that affected the outcome of this game, but I beg to differ. Matudaira has beaten an inspired Samsonov and has given Xu Xin a very good contest in the 2013 Worlds. Even though it's true he hasn't been consistent in the past, I think he has the unusual smarts and nose for the game.

People are you kodding me? Ma lin didn't play badly. He just didn't have a chance against Kenta because Kenta played godlike! Blocking everything exactly where Ma Lin was vulnerable.
Davíð Jónsson And why was he vulnerable? If you put Kenta against a penholder who can move well, like Xu Xin, he loses.
2008 Ma Lin would have certainly won.
Ma Lin's play is a lot based on finishing forehands and footwork. Growing old is severe towards this kind of play.
But you shouldn't take anything away from Kenta who has a great cover of the table with his strong backhand. And one of the best footwork among Japanese players too maybe ?
If Kenta had this level in Yokohama, he would have beaten Ma Lin as easy as now. His service recaive against him is perfect, Ma lin is not sure if he can turn directly around. He also has a very good service, also preventing ma lin to step around. And even if Ma Lin turns around, Kenta can block his topspin. There was absolutely no chance that Ma Lin could win
That's table tennis at this level. It's a young man's game. Ma Lin's time is simply over.
The mindset with which a player is playing is also what matters in winning and losing...

he went there for the money. he still is a good player, maybe not top10. He stopped playing with the chinese national team but 2014 was his last season at the chinese super league, where he still managed to win against much younger and motivated players
kenta played a clever game by totally penetrating the points through Ma lins forehand...throughout the entire match kenta did the same thing and ma lin still didnt correct it till the end..might be his age or pressue i guess?

Ma lin career last from 97 to 2013, 16 years , the reason is Hao Shuai and Chen Qi generation didnt reach the same level, so they have to wait until Ma lon, Xu Xin and Zhang Yike were ready to take the post, in this match was in decline and was crush by Kenta who reach his peak, like Leonardo Di Caprio in that wester movie jajajaja
its really sad to see ma lin being too slow to react to those shots it almost seems as if he isn't trying

Nah, Ma lin is still a great player, it's just that the younger players are better than ever before. In this match Ma Lin couldn't quite get his play off, because the younger player had the opportunity to attack everything immediatly.

@@Kevin-zl3ci No Chinese player can be considered undisputedly the greatest of all time.It boils down to match ups,the draw,luck as well as the direction of equipment changes.Ma's style was built for the 38mm era.He wasn't the more accomplished in terms of titles won for sure.
