    Learn how, when and where to look for seashells & train your eyes how to find/spot/discover sea shells/shark teeth/fossils in the sand along tide wrack lines. Common beach treasures found beachcombing, sea shelling & exploring along the Lowcountry Ace Basin Beaufort, South Carolina coastline include whelk (knobbed/knobby, channeled, kiener, pear), lettered olive (SC state shell), shark eye moon snails, angel wing shells, clams (Quahog, Venus, jackknife, razor, imperial), blue mussels, lucines, murex (giant eastern, lace, apple), sea urchin, sand dollars, seastar/starfish, tulip (banded & true) auger, baby's ear, coral frags, jingle, slipper, drill, periwinkle, egg casings, horseshoe crab shells, sea sponges & seawhips. Our favorite rare beach finds include Indian artifacts, vertebrae, giant tun shell, mermaid purse, fossil shells & antique bottles! Along our virtual beach walks, we encounter living sea creatures, including hermit crabs in the tide pools. We have a huge seashell collection. We give away a lot of beach treasures via channel giveaways & to our Patreon Patrons as our appreciation!
    Crabbing tips & tricks: how to/what to use to bait & catch blue crab with crab pots/traps or baskets; how to measure blue crab/stone crab claws; how to clean/cook crabs; how to determine sex/maturity of blue crabs; regulations & requirements for crabbing in SC.
    Inshore & offshore/deep sea fishing adventures: learn how to fish Carolina rigs using mud minnows, shrimp, squid or fiddler crabs catching spottail bass (bull redfish/red drum), spotted sea trout, sheepshead, flounder (gigging too), triggerfish, snapper, grouper, mackeral, bluefish, black drum, black sea bass, whiting, cobia, shark & more!
    Shrimp trawling: how to shrimp dragging a 25 ft trawl net with our small 17 ft boat; checking our nets; showing/sorting our catch; throwing back bycatch (squid, bait fish, skates/rays). Watch as dolphin & shorebirds (gulls, terns, pelicans) follow shrimp boats to catch a meal.

    We have just bought a house in North Myrtle Beach. I am going thru chemo, so I don't have very much sleep. I watched you until
    4am Monday night and until 5 am on Tuesday night. I so enjoy watching you guys as I would be doing the same if my body would allow. Hopefully I can walk the beach soon as I had a ankle replacement last February and my right leg is fused at the knee and will not bend and is 3 inches shorter than my left. I am so enjoying learning the names of shells and get so excited when I see the what beauty god had created. I hope I am sending a message under the correct video as I was watching on my TV and could not respond at the time. Look forward to watching y'all as Islam like cousins. I am from GA and my hubby of 26 years is from NC. He has been retired for 13 months now. And we will be permanently there as soon as we sell 2 houses here in GA. I LOVe your help as I learn how to go "SHELLING. Thanks again. Denise and Larry Stanford.

    Ya'll r too funny!😂 I'd say that was a pretty good wrack line to investigate. When it's like that you get sensory overload. Really weird seeing a black spiny jewelbox. Another day and I don't see anyone else. Hard to believe. You must have come home with a hundred baby's ears!😊 My goodness! Now that's a shell pile (23 min)! Looked like the shells just kept washing in to there. What fun! And you always enjoy a good meal better when you've spent the day outside! Thanks, guys!

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Ginger, for joining us on the beach once again! YES! We don't often see those big shell piles in our area, so I had to give all of our Saltaholics a feeling of how fun that is! I just love to hear the sound of the water washing thru those piles! 🎶🐚🌊💙 We were not near any of the public parking beach accesses & it was off-season for them. I think that's why the beach was pretty empty in the area we were in. Almost none of the houses around the one where we stayed were occupied at that time. & although there are beach access walkways every block or so, there is no parking (some had bicycle parking) at those accesses, so only used by the visitors within walking distance. I bet in the summer when every house on the island is occupied, the beach is probably packed! We got so lucky with the timing! Oh yeah, a day out in the glorious sunshine will build up your appetite! 😋

Plus some shark eyes, olives, augers, scallops, etc. And if you have a couple of rough old shells the cat could roll around, maybe that would keep Cleocatra away from the good stuff! LOL Thanks! We can get you some of these Holden Beach treasures. 🥰🤗 We welcome all support for our little channel! Thank you! Someone else mentioned the blue shells too, I think it was the ark shells that had turned a bluish color that you're seeing flashes of, there were oodles of them. I am thinking they may have been buried in dark sediment before they were dredged up for the beach renourishment, similar to how we find shells in our area that have that color from being submerged in our black mud for years & then beach erosion uncovers them. Looking back, I should have picked up some (cause y'know I need more seashells 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣), I don't normally collect arks because they are very common to us but these blue ones were different. 🤔 I'm going to tell Oliver we should go back to get more shells! 😁🤗

    Does the Sea Biscuit have the same skeleton as the flat sane dollar?

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  2 роки тому +2

      Basically but just shaped differently, if that makes sense. The exterior of a sea biscuit and/or sand dollar is their skeleton, so they are shaped the same as their respective living creature. They both range in diameter size from teeny tiny, smaller than a dime to bigger than the length of your hand dependingon species & age. Their height is where they differ though. Whereas a sand dollar is only going to be a cm or 1/2 inch or so thick even for the largest ones, a sea biscuit would be 2-3 inches thick for average sized ones. Sand dollars are fairly common in many oceans & climates but sea biscuits only are native to very tropcial climates (they are not native to NC in todays age but obviously were at some point in the history of this Earth). They are very similar as far as texture & fragility. The skeleton (aka test) of both sand dollar & sea biscuit marine animals is an exoskeleton, meaning the part you see when they are bleached out white & found on the beach, that is their actual skeleton. It is an outer shell of their body protecting all the soft inner matter of the animal. Their exoskeletons (both sand dollars & sea biscuits) when alive will be a greenish/purplish/brownish color and are covered with a layer of tiny spines (almost like super short stiff hairs) that help them move along the ocean floor, burrow under the sand, trap food, move food towards their mouths, etc. Once they are deceased, all those spines fall off as well as the interior soft matter of the animal decays, leaving just the test. They will loose their natural coloration the longer they have been deceased. Sand fills into all their many hundreds of orifices once they are deceased as they are dragged along the ocean floor with the current. The entire "flower"/seastar design on the top are teeny teeny tiny orifices as well as their mouth & anus located underneath (both of those are noticeable sized orifices). So if you find a white sand dollar washed up on the beach, once it dries out you'll be able to shake a lot of sand out it! That's why when you see these broken sea biscuit fossils, they are filled in completely instead of being hollow. So the ones we are finding in this video are prehistoric fossils - sand filled sea biscuits! 💙🦖🐚🤯
      Sorry for the book, but I figured others may have the same questions. & I talk A LOT, so there ya go 😵‍💫 ... more info than you ever needed to know! 😂🤣☠️. Thanks for coming along for the beach walk! 💙🌊👣🐚
