This was my first "real" guitar ever. Got it as a present right before the 8th grade talent show back in '96. Mine was HSS, but had a floyd rose. I have a S 521 now and it has a hardtail instead of floyd. These are the greatest guitars ever in my opinion. I've tried several other different guitars over the years I'm still most impressed by this one. I love the location and angle of the input jack probably the most. I hate an input jack flat on the front or on the edge of the body. After trying out other guitars that was something I quickly noticed was a huge turnoff but something I never really appreciated til I didn't have it anymore.

Nicely done, as usual, Darrell. I haven't had an Ibanez in several years, and all my "pure" electric instruments are either all-single-coil or all-humbucker, so the combination in something other than a Strat is appealing. This is my main guitar. It’s up there as one of the most versatile guitars available. An ultimate intermediate-level guitar. The quantum hum-bucker is good at everything while not perfect for anything and the 2 single coils with 5 switch positions give you a ton of options. The mahogany body gives a warmer tone than other superstrats or strats. Ibanez knocked this one out of the park. My Gibson Les Paul DC is my backup guitar to this Ibanez, that’s all I gotta say about this guitar.....

Does the neck feel comfortable? Im was thinking of buying this guitar, but a jackson caught my eye because of its speed neck

    • @electric5hadow
      @electric5hadow 3 роки тому

@@pavel5283 Glad you asked, because I’ve had experience with both Ibanez and Jackson. Neck is great. Thin, but not overly thin. The SA line doesn’t have a wizard neck. Jackson neck may be thinner. Jackson makes a fine instrument as well. Ibanez/Jackson make for some great comparisons, and my daughter used to have a Jackson. Even a budget Jackson will be a slightly better metal guitar, as Jackson’s very good stock pickups are just a tad bit hotter. I prefer Ibanez’s quantum pickup’s tone and versatility.
I cannot name a more versatile guitar out there than my Ibanez SA, as it can do literally every music style out there, but like I said, even a cheap Jackson will do metal better. Both are great choices.

Frank Gambale used S-Series Ibanez models for many years,so these aren't just for metal shredding.
What makes the S-Series so great,is how insanely balanced and light weight these guitars are.
Nita Strauss, who has a sign. model based on the S-Series always does a neat little trick, where she's balancing the guitar on the palm of her hand, holding it on the neck joint and there's no dive at all,it stays in perfect balance.

This guitar was my workhorse from 2004-2015, it is very versatile, never had tuning stability issues with it (excepting tremolo action). On that note it had a very good tremolo system although without the FR it would then go out of tune naturally after a few dive bombs. When I bought it I fell in love with it for a long time. The only two things I'd criticise are that the single coils hum/buzz, maybe noiseless would have been better but more importantly in a live setting it doesn't have the volume that a thicker sounding guitar would have.

CRANKS!, but you also get beautiful clean tones from the single coils. Good review... I recommend this guitar!

@@DarrellBraunGuitar If you're doing more with this one, be sure to mention that the earlier SA's are Korean made (Cort or WMI) and the build quality is noticeably better. Look for a black plastic mounting on the bridge pickup as a quick guide; Ibanez changed to a silver housing as on your example in late 2004 just before moving production to China in 2005.

1st - Buy what you like.
I'm just offering some perspective (for the more obsessive/serious young student, specifically) after three decades of playing. I've had two RGs and about a dozen other 6-string electric guitars over the years.
2nd - While this is certainly a pretty good starter axe, I'd strongly recommend a (aim for "used-but-in-the-newest-condition-possible', if funds are really tight) MIM Strat/Tele or Epiphone LP/SG instead. This will give you a leg up with the basic tonal qualities of the 'standard' instrument, which will in turn make your first ten years less of a struggle.
    Here's why:
3rd - By having a (relatively) proper spec of a classic model as you learn how to play, you won't have to wonder why you can't quite get a particular sound to be correct vs other sounds that seem to just flow out of the guitar naturally. In other words, explore all you can with that strat or LP ...and then play something else for a day or more - it will be a a real 'a-ha' moment that gives you a much better foundation from which to organize different tones in your musical vocabulary.
Why wonder, when you can know right away for entry-level cash?? There will always be time for frankenstrats and whatever variant/mutant guitar strikes your fancy later down the road when you can afford them easier.

I have had my ibanez sa 160 for many years! I guess about 23 years,.
Silver grey quilted maple, left handed and with a super low action + a demarzio multibucker installed at the bridge..
I scolloped the frets from the 11th up, and sanded the neck and the frets about 10 years ago.. and then set it up perfect, all by myself!!
    It's still my favourite guitar!
And upon judging all other left handed guitars that I have played against it, since I set it up, it is still the nicest guitar I have ever played, and it plays nicer than the only Paul Reed Smith I ever played too..
This guitar is the reason that I only own 2 guitars.. because I can't find one that plays or sounds nicer.. so I don't buy them..

Thanks for the review, Darrell. I've been eyeballing this on your rack for awhile now. I'm strongly considering this platform (SA series) to modify as a replacement for my very heavy MIM Strat. Ibanez always has acceptable build quality with well-constructed and comfortable neck profiles.

Still just buy the ones you need depending on the genre you’ll use it for. I have an Ibanez SA. Its my first and only electric guitar so far. It’s an HSS configuration. So I can use it for blues, jazz, funk, and almost any genre. I’m into 80s Metal. This guitar is all right for that stuff. But I’m getting into death metal for example. So I’m considering buying a 7 string. To me, if I can play the stuff I want to play on my guitar, then I won’t go looking for another.

There’s something soft and fuzzy about these pickups I just don’t like, similar to the original pups on my S470DX (first proper guitar) easily fixed by putting in a couple of Seymour Duncan humbuckers. Interestingly I messed up and put in the middle single coil out of phase but after hearing it I loved the versatility and tone of the in between sounds and I’d recommend anyone give it a go as it gives you something really different to work with so I have never ‘fixed’ it. Love that guitar but after owning it for 15 years or more it really needs some work on the frets. Slightly jealous of the HSS and non-locking term is this style of instrument fits so much better with how I play these days. Great video as usual!

I was in my late teens when the first Ibanez guitars, which are now called the "Lawsuit Era" guitars, first hit the USA. Gibson and Fender had all but lost their following, thanks to the inferior products being turned out by CBS and Norlin, so the stage was set for the newly set high standards of Japanese luthiery to step in and take over. Well, they didn't actually "take over" the guitar market, but the Les Paul, Strat, and Jazz Bass copies they were making were of the same quality that the "Big Two" were making BEFORE they had sold out to corporations. And for $150 (for an Ibanez LP or Strat copy,) to $175 (for a perfect Jazz Bass copy,) back in the early - mid '70s you could buy what most of us felt was a better instrument than the originals at that time were. It wasn't long before the lawsuits started to fly, and Ibanez was forced to create their own designs. Enter: The Ibanez Artist. But here's the REALLY good part (for Ibanez, that is): while the fit, finish, and overall quality of Gibson and Fender seemed to fluctuate a LOT over the years, not one aspect (besides the design of their guitars,) of Ibanez's quality changed in any way, except to improve. This series of guitars is a perfect example. Once again they have managed to design a quality instrument with excellent design parameters, for an extremely reasonable price. Sure, a huge portion of it is the super low cost of Chinese manufacturing, but that was EXACTLY where Ibanez (and Japan, really,) were when they started building guitars, so they set up manufacturing plants and trained the people in how to produce a superior product - a product that everyone who worked on its manufacture would be proud to sign their name to. When you can get people like THAT on your team, you'll win every time. Another good job, Ibanez, and another great video, Darrell!

Played it for 10 years, and went to guitar store to look up for another guitar and im looking at all these squier strats and pacificas, other s type guitars and none feels so good as ibanez! Maybe because I'm used to it, and the others are even more expensive, so i just went with a better amp!

You can still pick up run out stock of Ibanez Prestige RG652AHMFX guitars for a small fraction of what other brands would charge for a guitar of similar quality and about half the versatility. I have an R9 that simply doesn't come out of its case anymore because the Ibanez would slay it.

My friend has the 360 model in the amazing Black Mirage Gradation color, he has a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and two Seymour Single coils in the middle and the neck, If I remember correctly the Duncan Hot rail in the neck, it is closer to a humbucker I suppose. Awesome for both rhythm and leadwork. I absolutely love the Dimarzio Super Distortion and have had it in several guitars, its also pretty cheap.
What do you mean by better quality control than PRS SE ? I have never heard anything bad about the quality of the imported PRS, only good things.
