- Apple Spatial Audio vs. Sony 360 Reality Audio - Airpods Max | Sony XM4
In this video I'll be doing a follow up on my previous unboxing and first impressions review of the new Apple Airpods Max vs the Sony WH-1000XM4 Noise cancelling headphones! In this video I'll be talking specifically about the Spatial audio vs 360 reality audio features of both headphones, and my initial impressions there.

The spatial audio is based on your HEAD’s movement, hence the hardware on the AirPods itself is responsible for the effect: the in-built gyro/accelerometer is detecting your head’s movement. Therefore, moving the phone around won’t do the trick, and I believe it’s by design and it’s not a software issue. If not, Apple won’t be able to sell this spatial audio feature on their AirPods Pro/Max.
Yes, it's by design and to add to that: it does also track your phone but only relative to head movement:
-If you rotate your head but keep phone stationary, the sound balance pans to one ear
-If you rotate your head but also your phone with the it, the sound stays centered.

Moving phone did something. I am using Sony headphones with iPhone.
The problem with head tracking is it’s based relative to the position of where the screen is suppose to be usually right in front of you, rather then being relative to the position of the audio source within the media, IE. if you’re watching a movie that has a bee buzzing around off screen to the right with Dolby Atmos you’d hear the bee on your right ear but if you happen to turn your head that same bee will still be buzzing in that same right ear instead of switching to the left ear. It’s really a gimmick and nothing at all special in comparison to the Dolby Atmos the AirPod Pros are piggybacking on and especially the proprietary 360 Reality Audio Sony has going for itself. The AirPods are inferior in nearly every respect to the Sony’s. Sony also is truly universal in that you can actually use Dolby Atmos with the Sonys but you can’t use 360 Reality Audio with the AirPods lol. All you need to do is turn Dolby Atmos on in your iPhones music settings and have an Apple Music subscription and you’re off to the races.
Now I think is the good time to have a proper comparison with Apple Music's Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio vs Sony's 360 Reality Audio
Have u found one??
Have you found any?
I was honestly disappointed when the 360 reality audio was only available after buying a subscription.
Thank you, I still prefer Sony XM4 over Airpods Max
me 2 bro
The AirPods Max are in both auditory frequencies, thus, sound. Also, their transparency mode is far superior and the ANC is the exact same, microphones are also far better. Truth be told, most don’t like them purely due to the price.
@@shadowios7033 Well, that they don't turn off without having to go back in the stupid case is a big no for me, and they don't fold up. The spatial audio would be great though.
@@paullynch4021 People who the AirPods are geared towards don’t take public transit, they don’t care about them holding up either, that’s the thing.
So Apple's pricing strategy is to make this kind of idea like "only rich people know the taste" cuz thats the only way they can beat sony, sennheiser, etc.
btw do you recommend xm4 for someone love vmoda crossfade Ⅱ codex(っ'ヮ'c)?
Apple spatial audio is good with watching movies/tv while Sony 360 reality audio is good for listening to music. Honestly I’m more impressed with spatial audio. It was really trippy when I first experienced it
Sony 360 audio is also very limited. I owned the xm4 for a while now and I haven’t used that feature since we don’t have tidal in our country.
Sony 360 reality to listen to music on apps that NO ONE use, cmon, and also having to pay a monthly fee for that feature… it’s a Joke
@@47pug Can use any program, as long as the music quality is reached
Why would someone turn their head when they are watching movies on their mobile or laptop? What is the point of spatial audio and head tracking?🙄
When using spatial audio, use transparency mode it feels like your there/ btw I use do this on AirPod Pros so I don’t know if it’s the same
Good tip!
yo that makes sense🤯
I never noticed the effect on the XM4s and some music services are removing the 360 option.
Thanks, for making the difference so clear. The Sonys do seem simply better .... for all the reasons you mentioned.
Are U deaf?

"I think for value the XM4 is definitely the winner.
because the main features for me at least are
Sound quality
Noise Cancelation
and
How well it travels.
And the first two are basically on par.
And the third point - how well it travels - I think the XM4 beats the Airpods Max in that regard just because it has a better case and I feel I wouldn't be as worried about banging these around as the Airpods Max because these look so nice I'd just hate to scratch them basically. And the case that they come in does allow them to be vulnerable to that. "
As I said, I agree that the XM4s are better for all the reasons he mentioned.
And in answer to your question - NO! I am not deaf. I have relatively good hearing.
Given, your questions and the edited transcript above, it seems your question could be posed to the person you see when you look in the mirror.
Q: What did you hear?
@@iu1191 don't waste your time talking to him he is isheep
@@parthgolhar Sony headphone fanboys are silly...people with actual HiFi headphones laugh at both Sony and Apple with their crap sounding headphones. The XM4 sound like you are listening underwater after you try something from Sennheiser or Hifiman. It's like 360p vs 4k.
@@chamade166 equalizer makes it lot better
That statement audio quality is better is completely subjective. I've heard people show more love to Sony xm4 in terms of sound quality.
not a subjective sony is much better
@@pranavgandhar4604 I own both xm4 and airpods max and xm4 has a bad audio quality out of the box. It is bass heavy. Compared to the airpods max it sounds very natural.
@@junpaworlanes you are Joking right? Been using airpods max for 3 months now as I'm more into the Apple ecosystem...
My friend/best bud uses XM4's...
Have you ever listened xm4's with LDAC?
I'm not sad about my purchase but the sound is miles ahead on Sony's...
And yes where I'm from the price of them are pretty high so you can see my frustrations 🙂
isnt he the guitar02hero guy?
cause that review was very precise and i really liked it
Yes he is
Ohmygosh! I'm glad to see you doing product reviews aside from teaching guitar lessons on your other youtube channel! I've been a subscriber ever since on your other channel and I was scrolling to check whether I should purchase the XM4s or Apple's headphones. Thanks a lot! Gotta subscribe now
why would you like to turn your head away while watching a movie? If you buy the apples you need to turn your head all the time to feel immersed?
You can turn headtracking off an just use special audio
I compared the in-ear versions of the AirPods Pro and the Sony WF-1000xm4 and I’m far more impressed with the AirPods Spatial Audio over Sony’s 360 Reality Audio. Maybe because I have an iPhone so it’s more formatted for the device but I even used Apple Music to test Spatial and Amazon Music to test 360, as they were designed for each respectively.
Thanks! Very clear comparision, now I got it and prefer to XM4 because of the travel convenience :)
Dave! Nice to see a familiar face on UA-cam again
Hello! How would you describe listening to a movie with a dolby atmos on the iphone using the xm4? Does it virtually emulate a surround sound? Thanks in advance!
Im trying to figure out the same thing
So you want to feel like one side of your headphone is broken when you turn ur head 👌🏾
It's more subtle than just volume differences. It distorts the audio in each ear in specific ways to trick your brain into thinking that the audio is coming from particular directions. There are examples of this online that you should check out, they're pretty cool. For example it can sound like an object is spinning around you, and there is a distinct difference between forward and backwards not just left and right. Not just loud and quiet in different ears.
Haha... Yeah I reckon
So unless you have an account with those services it doesn't work? Why not set up for UA-cam music or Spotify?
find it funny how you say its trippy. But the concept of spacial audio is more in line to reality because it Mimics how our hearing should work.
But the foreseen reality That we all are accustomed to, while wearing a headband with cups hanging around ears blowing off sound, is that We expect sound to move with our head. similarly it would be expected for the sound from The front of us when we are not wearing anything on our ears.
Hey man love the review but just a heads up, I think you’ve kinda got the Spatial Audio thing wrong. At least to my understanding, Spatial Audio isn’t an actual audio format. It’s enabled to work with 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos. I believe the Mando episode you watched, you were listening to a Dolby Atmos mix. I don’t believe there is such a thing as a Spatial Audio mix. What IS unique to Spatial Audio though is indeed the head tracking so thanks so much for the info there. Just pretty sure in terms of the engineered mixes, you were really comparing a Sony 360 music mix to a Dolby Atmos TV mix. Which is a totally cool comparison!
Why would anyone want the audio change just because they turn their heads? That's ridiculous considering the main purpose of a headphone or earphone is to put sound sources on your head so that you're free to move.
I read you can listen to 360 reality audio with any headphones. So i tried it with my $10 ear buds but it sounds awful. There's lack of bass and hi frequency, and i didn't experience the 360 music surrounding of the sound although i have installed the sony headphones connect app. Do i need to get a propper headphones that support this sound? Which one should i buy. Thank for the help.
If you are talking about the 360 from Sony, you can't hear it with every headphone, it should support 360 Realty Audio like wf1000xm3 , wf 1000xm4 , wh1000xm4, wfsp800n
In ear monitors even the budget ones have been doing this for years... lol you can hear every single instrument/voice/sound effect .. because they have multiple drivers. I refuse to use audio if they don't have multiple drivers at this point
I bought sony and it’s cool
Can you compare the sound quality when both are enabling noise cancellation in the noise environment?
Blew my brother and I’s mind when we tried the Max’s in Best Buy
I disagree with you. I tried Special Audio and 360 Reality Audio, in short, Special Audio. You have to turn your head right or left in order to hear the voice of the speaker or the phone, and this does not help me much. No one watches a movie and turns his head, either 360 Sound effects and music are the ones that wrap around your ear whenever the camera that captures the scene on your phone or TV moves
You can turn headtracking off an just use special audio
360 reality audio is far superior for music
But ....is anyone turning their heads when they are watching shows?...
Where did you buy your case
and here is me listening this amazing content from my philips sbh3175 20$ headphones. But hey its great to know the differences.
Aren't u the guy from guitarzerotohero?
Were you in *THE MATRIX* fighting against Neo?
Hi all! I have a XM4, which is great for music, but I love to see movies and I would like to enjoy dolby atmos effects around me (I have no space for a speakers system).
I have FireTV 4k and Google TV but I don't get Atmos (good quality sound but no the effects around), and I'm thinking to buy the last Apple TV 4k in order to enjoy that.
As Spatial Audio is really integrated with Dolby Atmos (I know I couldn't use Spatial Audio with XM4 but that's not important for me), but... I could get the (real) atmos sounds effect around, or that feature will be deactivated and I Airpods Max is needed for that? ... someone has tried ?
Thanks !
There’s a surprise on 4:10 on the left 🎉 4:10
Do you have any affiliation with either Apple or Sony (any possible source of inadvertent bias we should be aware of)?
No affiliation at all - purchased these with my own money
I came here thinking I will get to hear demo comparisons, but nope.
Turning head effect is fantastic as a childish novelty without any practical use to enjoy music. What were the Sony's connected to? An iPhone with the lowest codec quality (aac) or Android device with the highest codec (ldac)? Try connecting your Apple devices to a DAC and the Airpods pro max (wired), with Apple's lossless music and then you will not need nor desire Dolby Atmos, 360, or Spatial. Wired is still king, Apple won't tell you what you are missing because they want you to keep buying their wireless headphones. The Sonys come with wire for us to have the choice to use wire or ldac. (See videos about aac, aptx, and ldac to understand what Apple refuses to give you)
Whats the cost for each of these services ? Hopefully none.
Apple’s is free, you just need the proper AirPods and proper iOS version. Apple Music now supports special audio and loseless at no additional cost to your Apple Music subscription
Amazon Music has Sony 360 Reality Audio
SONY THE BEST 👍👍❤️❤️👌❤️
Does 360 reality audio work when I'm watching movies on TV (Netflix and also PLEX) when connected to sony WF-1000XM4?
I have a Sony WF-1000XM4 headphones and I believe that Netflix and Plex's sound output would need to be optimized for 360 Reality Audio for it to be heard in that quality as I don't think that the WF-100MX4 has 360 Reality Audio sound upscaling.
I also have a Tidal account which I've linked to my Plex server meaning that I can play my Tidal 360 Reality Audio tracks through Plex. Hope this helps.
♥️SONY♥️
Wow !! Apple regulates the volume 🤣🤣
Yeah to prevent distortion like Bose but it’s much better at it
@@1nine8two39 I was sarcastic, but now I would need to try it, so far did not find nothing better than Sony or Bose
Why I have to. Turn my head
You can turn headtracking off an just use special audio
spatial audio is very unprofessional . ( turn ur face right volume down on the left , turn ur face left volume down on the right ) wow technology🤣🤣 . 360 reality is incredible just close ur eyes and feel the magic
Spatial Audio only affects the center channel. For example if someone is talking only the voice is affected by head turning. Other sound will still in the same position.
That spatial gimmicky thing is useless lol who is going to tur while watching a movie? There is no comparison sonys sound quality is 3x better
You say it’s useless and then say Sony’s is better without even hearing it for yourself. Also it’s not useless because it’s not just while you turn your head, you can actually hear the sound separation. Don’t knock something you haven’t tried. I’ve let all my friends try it and they were all impressed and none of them are audiophiles or tech nerds
No way
apple suckd when it comes to high freq,
at studio i get sweet balanced freq but on apple headphone they
high frequencies are murdering my ears
on th name of flat eq ,apple is providing sharp eq
stealing technologies of sony and yamaha is only option to beat these companies😁
Apple have cheaper one's for people that are talking 💩 is call Beats ... this headphones are not for everyone just like a Lamborghini ..💯✌🏻✌🏻
Using an Apple Computer and an Apple Smartphone? Immediately disqualified and not really to be taken seriously.
Well I did return the AirPods and kept the XM4s so.... maybe don’t judge a book by it’s cover
