Correcting Leaders in Canaan Fir and Grand Fir Trees

One job every tree farmer must do while growing Christmas Trees is walking though the fields and correcting missing or damaged tops. This work is done while the tree is actively growing before the that years growth becomes too hard to accept the new shape. In this video I’m going though our Canaan fir field which will be open for sale next year. I've found that this happens more when I smaller groups of staples vs. a full new stick of staples. Are you experiencing the same? Alos happens when its full of sap.

What state is this? I’ve been tempted to grow a grand fir as a yard tree in the eastern US but have seen that they do poorly. But, the botanical garden that said that is in St Louis which has extremely hot summers compared to us

Thanks for the comment. I'm located in in southeast Michigan zone 6A. I have seen them get winter burned and actually did loose a couple 3-4' trees from that. So if you're thinking of using them as landscape you'll need to use the burlap during the winter.

@@Hillsidechristmastreefarm I know there is a mountain variety that is more cold hardy, I might use that one. Our state champion tree in 96’ tall!

@@Hillsidechristmastreefarm I am in zone 6b in Ohio and our summers are probably more kind to them than Michigan
