hey bro, great video. in the process i discovered a shortcut for the tough part. take a 30mm socket, place it over the steel ring, wack it really good with a rubber mallet and it seats right into place.

Great video. I would just like to add that if you drill a couple holes into that cast aluminum piece, you could put a roll pin or a long nail through it to keep that lock washer from ever sliding off again.

Flashback502 - Thank you for showing the process for this. My passenger side mirror did this. I have an idea for getting that clip back on. Use a OS/2 socket so you can go right over it and then put an extension on it and force it down. I have to check out the size of the socket compared to the clip size. Hopefully they are similar enough :)

Thank you for the detailed instructions. I had this very thing happen with my passenger side mirror. My brother in law and I took it off and decided there wasn't any way to get in there and look at it let alone fix it. We were simply going to go to take time and spend some money at the junkyard for a replacement. At the last minute I decided to type "fix a tahoe side mirror" into UA-cam, since UA-cam has been a great resource in the past. Lo and behold, there was your video. We followed your instructions and the mirror is fixed / back on the truck. It definitely is no picnic pressing that cap on while having to compress the spring. But we did it with a pair of channel locks and a pair of pliers and a hammer. You saved me money and time. Thanks again!

That was a great video. I was able to use a C shaped valve spring compressor to put that ring back on. Once you have it back together, drill a couple holes in the cast aluminum piece and put a roll pin, nail, or wire through both sides and it can never slide apart again.

Thanks so much for your video, I live in New Zealand where all Chevy trucks are imported and we are not able to just go and buy used parts at a wrecking yard for most models as they are hard to find here. New parts are available online but shipping costs are very high even if we can find some parts supplier who will even ship to NZ. So your video was a godsend when my mirror failed. Instructions were clear and like most people I was only a bit stuck when pressing the washer back on. I tried a valve spring compressor which was probably a little small to handle the job, I tried zip tying the spring after compressing it with a couple of vice grips but the ties I had werent beefy enough to hold it when I released the vice grips. In the end I used a couple of small G Clamps which worked out with the help of a friend. I was going to put a pin in as someone else suggested to help hold the washer down but opted for using a hot glue gun to liberally glue around the top which seems to be working great.....thanks :-)

Tried fixing my 2002 denali and the assembly was totally diffrent and wasnt able to fix. Now my 2003 silverado was similar to the one on this video and ibwas able to fix it. Out of nowhere this mirror was like this. I always fold the mirror by hand and park my truck in the garage. I went to fold it back open and it was loose. Thanks to this video i was able to fix it. 1 tip, The spring was so hard to push down what i did was hit it down with a flat head screw driver between the teeth on the ring. But make sure the teeth are back down because mine was up.

I tried to press the locking washer via two clamps, and also jacking the washer downward using a small screwdriver... however, I finally removed the mirror assembly from the car and temporarily pulled the wire from the locking nut to give access to a VISE to first press the locknut flat and mostly to press it onto the tube using an oversized socket (note: used three sizes above the socket that fit the tube in order to allow the locknut to sufficiently flex when pressing it on.) I probably didn't need to do this, but I tack-welded two sides of the nut to make sure it wouldn't slip.

@@Flashback502 the same problem. That clip ring was off the tube. Was fearing the idea of buying a new mirror assembly. Bought this Tahoe for a song. It was neglected for a couple years. Been replacing worn parts and bring it up to A-1 condition. Is a 2001, now My wife is driving a near new, 20 year old, beautiful vehicle. Only gave 3500 for it, 145k miles. Is now in excellent shape. I got as far as taking the hub/housing apart with no problem, but the clip was a problem I bent the tabs as you instructed but I could not get the ring to go over the spring. At the end of your video I did not see how you press that cap/ring over the springs, show me how you did that...

It was no picnic. We were fortunate enough to have a couple of pairs of channel locks. We used one pair of channel logs to compress one side of the spring, and a pair of pliers and a hammer to compress the other side at the same time. Took us about ten minutes to figure it out, but it works.
