Nice guards though, I guess they don't get payed enough to make a great hassle out of detaining you and all that, too much paperwork.
@@moritzneuschwander Well a radar dish actually collects radiovawes and focuses the signal. An emitting radar might be dangerous. I don't know that much but feel free to share any knowledge if you have any!! Cheers!
@@moritzneuschwander a radar usually uses a parabolic reflector exploiting the fact that the parabola reflects every line into its focus and vice versa. So a magnetron and a receiver both sit in the parabolic reflector's focus. a beam of microwaves is emitted from the magnetron on the reflector which directs it towards the target. the beam bounces on the target and is reflected back, hits the reflector and is focused back into the receiver. by computing different parameters like the doppler effect you are able to determine the position of the target. i rushed the explanation a bit but you can read the wiki for more details, but the essence is: a radar can fry your head, even a small one if you are close enough
@@moritzneuschwander There are plenty of stories of technicians being killed while working on radar transmitters that were activated while they were on it, it's literally just shooting huge amounts of EM radiation out so by definition its going to have a similar effect to your microwave.

The Ionospheric Research Station is located near Zmiev, close to Kharkov and is still used from time to time by (no doubt desperate) scientists - the area was declassified recently. The biggest antenna is capable of producing 25 MW impulse power (compare it to the HAARP station’s 12.5 MW) and is 25 meters in diameter. The IS (incoherent scatter) radar is quite unique (there are only 9 in the world) and covers 100 meter x 100 meter area. Ionosphere researching institute is located near Zmyev town 30 km to south from Kharkiv-city.
People say it in many ways though. I have heard mid 2000s before when referring to the 2000-2010 period. Naughts. Naughties. Zeroes even. After the millennium (which is technically also wrong since it's after the second millennium... etc.) millennial years... etc. If you ask people, they will have differing opinions and I agree that some would find these "wrong". But if that's how people use it...

That looks like a large, single-aperture radio telescope. Judging by the mesh spacing, it looks like it was designed primarily to observe 21 cm radio emission from galactic hydrogen. If that thing was capable of transmitting and was turned on, you would have suffered some serious induction burns. Also, the grid of wooden posts looks like the supports for an old incoherent scatter radar used for atmospheric research.
Cool! I’ll be the first to admit surprise that the soviets would have such installations. We tend to have a pretty slanted view of them, and to hear that they would have non military space projects is surprising.
@İlkin Hydrogen is the most abundant element in our galaxy as well as in the universe as a whole. Despite its abundance, it can be notoriously difficult to observe in the plane of our galaxy. Single hydrogen atoms mostly produce ultraviolet and visible light that is heavily scattered out of our line of sight by cooler complex molecules in the plane of the galaxy (which we usually call "galactic dust".) This phenomenon is responsible for the dark lanes you see in the Milky Way. If an astronomer wants to see past this dust, they need to observe at longer wavelengths of light (e.g. infrared and radio) which pass right through the dust. Fortunately, hydrogen can produce radio waves at a wavelength of 21 cm via a quantum mechanical process that lowers the overall angular momentum and energy in the hydrogen atom. In grad school, I used a 21 cm radio telescope for an assignment where we had to measure the thickness of the galaxy. It was pretty cool to use.
@@SweetLou0523 not really surprising when you consider why nasa was conceived, Space weather is most probably the most impactful force on life in this solar system. Glass on the moon and all that.
@Imapotato Good question. It's common to find radio telescopes that are simple mesh dishes. This saves on material and weight. The dish will still function as a detector as long as the mesh spacing is comparable to or less than the wavelength of radiation you're observing. This is also the reason why microwave oven door windows are covered with a fine wire mesh. It reflects or absorbs much the microwave radiation striking it, so you can look through the window without getting burned. Also, the dish needs to be enormous since the spatial resolving power of a telescope worsens as wavelength increases. However, resolving power is also proportional to the square of the dish diameter. So, for a single dish at long radio wavelengths, you need huge diameters to spatially resolve objects in the sky or else things even as large as the Sun or Moon will just appear as featureless points of light to the telescope.
@@CosmoNautica22 Thank you for your insightful comments! I knew about the hydrogen line observations, but I'm really fascinated by the fact that you could place such an educated guess as to what this structure exactly was used for (probably).

Have you any knowledge about how radar dishes work?
Looks like an old HAARP array.
@@moritzneuschwander There are plenty of stories of technicians being killed while working on radar transmitters that were activated while they were on it, it's literally just shooting huge amounts of EM radiation out so by definition its going to have a similar effect to your microwave.
